If you are visiting Alkmaar on a Friday over the summer, you will inevitably end up at the cheese market where men in traditional costumes inspect the large wheels of gouda, then carry them on barrows to be weighed. Yes it's touristy, but it's also great fun and interesting to watch and a marvellous way of keeping traditions alive. While the men are carrying the cheese, the girls walk up and down the crown selling bags of cheese, 10 euros for a reusable bag, a pencil case and 3 generous chunks of mild, mature and extra mature gouda, significantly cheaper than the nearby cheese van. Even in September the crowds were 3-4 people deep, but they rotate quickly as people move on. Around the market are plenty of stalls selling souvenirs and traditional Dutch snacks and don't forget to explore the rest of this pretty town. See more..

The cheese Market takes place in Edam on Wednesday mornings in July/August and gives you an opportunity to see how trading used to happen. Catch a 314 bus from Amsterdam Central Bus Station. The village is picturesque and you have an opportunity to purchase cheeses from various stalls (and to taste them) at prices cheaper than the Amsterdam Cheese Shops. Cheese. Inextricably linked to Dutch traditions. The oldest cheese market in the Netherlands is the cheese market in Hoorn, the historic port town just north of Amsterdam. A cheese market with roots in the Golden Age and even further back in time. A cheese market that is still going strong: visit this weekly market from mid-June to the end of August, acquaint yourself with this age-old trade. It’s free! At times, it might seem a little funny; briskly stepping men in their impeccably white suits and their straw hats with colourful ribbons, carrying wooden racks filled with cheeses between them. Yet this scene is part of an age-old choreography, with each step having a meaning all its own. The stacking, the judging, the weighing: it all plays a role.
