    Zaanse Schans image
Be transported back to the 18th and 19th-century Dutch countryside in this residential neighborhood. Zaanse Schans is full of old wooden windmills and houses, some of which were relocated here for preservation. It was actually the first industrial zone in the Netherlands, and the windmills were used for all sorts of things, like grinding spices and producing paint. Today, it's a popular tourist destination where you can explore quaint museums and traditional shops or take a guided tour of the district on foot, boat, or bicycle. Zaanse Schans is a popular day trip option from Amsterdam. – Tripadvisor See more..

  6. 4.5 Micropia (1.485 reviews)
    - Amazing interactive microbiology museum. Family and disabled friendly for a good price. Can't recommend it enough.
Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
    Micropia image
Amazing museum, I didn't expect much but I was really taken aback. There were many microscopes and flasks filled with bacteria, very interactive and many unique ways of teaching children (and adults) about microbes. I recommend going there an hour before the daily lab Q&A so you can look at at least most of the first floor exhibitions. It has many videos, so even if you're not really into reading, you will still learn many new things. The visit takes three hours minimum, especially if youre interacting with everything. It is a great way to spend an afternoon with your family. People with advanced knowledge of biology may find it primitive but experiencing and interacting with all the exhibitions makes up for it. For a cheap price (compared to other museums) it is really worth your time and I can't recommend it enoug. See more..

    Teylers Museum image
Anyone who opens the museum's heavy door on the bank of the River Spaarne sees at a glance what it is that inspires such enthusiasm. The museum breathes the atmosphere of the 18th and 19th centuries - the Age of the Enlightenment - when people were busily gathering knowledge about the world. Teylers Museum, museum of wonder, is a world in itself, one that you will never forget. Teylers Museum is the best-preserved 18th-century public knowledge institution for the arts and sciences in the world. It has been open to the public since 1784, welcoming all those who are eager to look at paintings and drawings by the Old Masters, magnificent minerals, ingenious scientific instruments, precious books, and centuries-old fossils. The museum's interior alone, with the monumental Oval Room, is a truly remarkable attraction. It is the only authentic 18th-century museum interior in the world. Recently the historical house of founding father Pieter Teyler was added to the museum. See more..

  15. 4.5 Singer Laren Museum, Theatre and Sculpture Garden (261 reviews)
    - Was pleasantly delighted about this museum in Laren
    Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
Singer Laren Museum, Theatre and Sculpture Garden image
Singer Laren is a unique cultural heritage with an American cultural heritage in private ownership. It consists of a beautiful boutique museum, theater, historical villa and a Piet Oudolf sculpture garden. Museum Singer Laren has a surprising and diverse collection of international visual art from the period 1880 to 1950. This ‘classic modern’ collection has given the museum the freedom to set up a wide exhibition policy. This collection was set up by the American couple Anna and William Singer, who received many friends in their villa in Laren. There were often artists among these friends. Anna and William themselves were also creatively talented. Anna played the piano and William painted. Together, they have collected an impressive art collection. Anna had the museum built after the death of her husband William. The Singer Laren sculpture garden designed by Piet Oudolf opened in June 2018. The garden contains sculptures by contemporary Dutch artists. See more..

    - An amazing collection - a reminder of the awesome power of the sea

Shipwreck and Beachcombing Museum Flora image
So many shipwrecks from such a small island! Many of the pieces of wreckage or flotsam accompanied by photos or news clippings. And for those whose attention wanders after a few minutes of printed words (think teenage boys), there are strategically places games to play all the way around and a large play area at the end. There is so much to see that it is actually a bit overwhelming - I think it's the kind of place one needs to visit a few times to absorb most of it (entrance is pretty reasonable for the level of entertainment/enjoyment). There's a café serving snacks - we didn't try anything because we were still very full from lunch at Restaurant Worsteltent just a few minutes cycling away. I will definitely be back - so will the children who exclaimed "why do the Netherlands have such great museums?!" See more..

    - Nice little Museum

Fort Kijkduin (Museum and Aquarium) image
I visited here with my cousins who had been there before but according to them the entire operation has gone downhill. Even though the money isnt there to improve the facilities and maintain it effectively, i still enjoyed the visit. The museum is small but pretty cool because it is in the old fort and is very diverse. The aquarium could have been better but it was nice because they have petting pools and you can feed the animals. There is also a giant whale skeleton in the basement which is pretty impressive. I think that if you are in the area you should visit, but it is not something that you need to go out of your way to see. See more..

This museum is one of the hidden treasures of Haarlem. If you want to see how the city came to become as it is now it is definitely worth a visit. Two rival cities during the Dutch Golden Age period - Haarlem and Amsterdam fought for their own right and, occasionally, with each other - for fame, power and influence. Current permanent exposition will take you through those ages to our modern times. Very cosy museum locatedon the same street just 50 meters from the Frans Hals museum! I was really impressed with this small museum telling the story of this ancient settlement - the rise and fall (and rise) of Monnikendam. There are also natural history displays and a wonderful coillection of old clocks on the top floor - make sure to be there on the hour to hear all manner of bells, cuckoos, chimes.. Don't miss the chance to hear the gramophone from 1900 - for 10 cents you can hear it play (holes punched in a huge tin 'record'). The exhibit descriptions are in Dutch and English and the informative films are sub-titled in English. My friend and I went on a day trip to Enkhuizen and didn’t plan to visit this museum, but when we walked past we were immediately intrigued. A museum about ships in a bottle? We talked to the lady who gave us a tour. The amount of remarkable ships (and many other things) that are in these bottles is amazing, and a video that shows how it’s done really clarifies a lot. Besides it being a museum, the building itself also holds a piece of Enkhuizer hostory in it’s heart, but the friendly lady of the museum can tell you all about it. Absolutely worth a visit. Entry is cheap, it won’t take up much of your time, but there is lots to see and learn! See more..

There is a cafe for a coffee or lunch. Weddings are regularly held in the atmospheric hall. You will have a guide who takes you round, its about an hour to see the castle and its collection. You could easily walk past this museum in Naarden, but you shouldn't. The people that run this place really enjoy company and know a lot about engagement, telling a story and entertaining you. Don't go in when it's crowded or when you are in a rush. When they have time to give you a tour, this is a worthwhile entertaining stop (if you're just on your own, you will miss a lot of narrative). Good for kids as well. We enjoyed our time with Ronald. He did a good job telling all about weights, measures and the ways in which people have always tried to bamboozle others. See more..

Museum In 't Houten Huis image
A tiny, compact museum showing an impeccable wealth of information and historic items of life in the 18th century ranging from herring fishery in the Baltic sea, whale hunting in the far north near Spitsbergen and the quest for a north-east passage, along Russia to America ending with Barentz's crew wintering on Nova Zembla as well as the struggle to fertilize and expand the earth nearby, leading to initiatives to polder the lakes in the region. The small, charming museum combines small items, maps, instruments, shipping equipment, furniture, clothes, movies and the unique smell of wood in an old house. See more..

First of all, beautiful building! Very kind staff, they took the time to tell my about their exhibitions. (Temporary and permanent) Wouldn't mind an audiotour (or something similar), since there was ALOT of text/information on the walls, to the point that it was almost to much to read. See more..
