    Herengracht image
At the beginning of the Herengracht we find the Herenmarkt, a square that now serves as a children's playground. Behind the square stands the West India House, built in 1617. From 1624, the building served as the head office of the Dutch West India Company, a multinational which administered the Dutch colonies in North and South America. In the year 1625, a meeting took place in this building, in which it was decided to found the city of New Amsterdam. Which was later renamed to New York. See more..

Had a great day on the lake, boating with former colleagues. Watching planes go to and from Schiphol. The Westeinderplassen actually is the biggest body of inland water in the Netherlands. Something I didn’t know, myself. We had a lot of fun exploring all the small islands, moats and inlets around the lake. Ice place to relax and have fun sailing or boating! See more..

Start with a cup of coffee or tea in the Bakery Out near the little bridge in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. Did you know that Ouderkerk is the founding place of Amsterdam? After the stop go left over the bridge. First part till you pass the highway A9, aprox. 2 km, you enter the world of the oldest Polder in NL. Enjoy the ride! See more..

So nice to finally be able to have a drink or a bite now too! A pavilion has been opened on the edge of the beach, so it is now even easier to stop for a moment to have a drink or to have a wonderful day at the beach without having to bring a full cool box. See more..

  9. 4.5 Noordzeekanaal (11 reviews)
    - Great intro to the Netherlands
    Bodies of Water
    Noordzeekanaal image
The Noordzeekanaal or North Sea Canal is a great waterborne introduction to the Netherlands. The canal links Amsterdam to the North Sea at Ijmuiden, Ijmuiden looked interesting from our ship, with a huge industrial plant/ power station on the opposite canal bank. The canal is, at this point some 200 meters wide, with some small islands by the sea locks, and WW2 fortifications. Bizarrely there were beach huts on one side of the small estuary, and huge wind turbines plus the industrial plant on the other. Huge twin towers on either side of the canal, had people guessing as to what they were, (but photos on TC indicated that they were ventilation towers for the autobahn underneath the canal). Its a real assortment of craft that use the canal, including the fast express hydrofoil from Amsterdam to Ijmuiden. We did not see much wildlife though. The Amsterdam cruise ship terminal is within 800 meters of the Centraal station (beware of cycles if walking between the two) See more..

  12. 4.5 Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen (10 reviews)
    - Fantastic walk
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen image
The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen is an area of dunes where in the 1800 canals were carved to extract fresh water to supply Amsterdam. The area is protected and is covered by forest with deer, foxes, hares and lots of birds. The area is big and there many trails for walkers and riders. The paths are not difficult and some of them even allow for wheelchairs. There is even a wooden decked path to reach the visitor's centre hosted in a old pumping station (see photos). I Strongly recommended it. See more..
  13. 3.5 Meertje Van Caprera (4 reviews)
    - Rescuing a Young Bird
Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water
    Meertje Van Caprera image
It is too small to call a "lake" but also bigger than a pond. We've just finished walking around the pond then suddenly we saw something struggled in the water. We saw a bird fought for its life so we decided to rescue him, took him home with us directly and called the animal ambulance. He was back from the shock when the ambulance came two hours later. We're relieved that he was alive. See more..
