This very well preserved synagogue is certainly worth a visit. It is one of the biggest synagogues built by the jews fleeing from Portugal during the sixteenth century. We may admire the huge stone columns supporting the very high ceiling. In the basement the visitor may see a short film with the history of the sephardite jews as well as several cult objects, many of the centuries old. There are audio guides and a well done flyer. We visited St Bavo’s for the Easter Vigil service and the whole experience was just amazing. The church was candlelit and the atmosphere was just so peaceful and holy feeling. The service was in Dutch but that hardly mattered as it was so beautiful and the choir with the amazing acoustics made the whole experience just magical. We also visited the church in the daytime later in the week for the official tour as well so we got to experience it in a different way but it couldn’t top the candlelight service experience we had. One downside was that the organ was under construction so we didn’t get to view the massive organ. Also, weirdly, there was a carnival set up outside for kings day celebration for a week so getting pics of the outside is the church was difficult as it had carnival rides in the way! But visiting here for the Easter service was one of the highlights of our trip. See more..

The court predates 1572 and was a monastery. In that year it housed townspeople made homeless due construction of new city defenses against the Spanish. Later it was used as home for the elderly. It currently houses a restaurant with the same name. Anyway, we sat outside in the court yard and had a cup of coffee, while admiring the looks of this obviously very old place. It's surprisingly quiet for its location in the heart of the old city. See more..

Completed in 1540, but extensions and changes were made during subsequent ages. Striking is the wooden tower standing alone next to the main building from 1519 (currently under repair). It took some 70 years to build the church. Younger than the nearby Zuiderkerk, but more spacious. Interesting to hear the floor of the church contains more than 1500 tombstones. See more..

This is *not* a show-up-and-walk-around place, please do not go there without letting them know you're coming. My wife arranged (weeks before) to see if she could find the graves of some ancestors, and we were met at the gate. The tour we were given was above and beyond any possible expectation. The history of this place, and these people, is captivating. The church building of 1521 is old but inside, the seats are modern. Probably only the carillon, the statue on the wall and the pulpit are old. Someone in the church told us about the date of the building. The dedication date of the church is accurately known, as it is stated on the beam in the triumphal arch, now directly above the pulpit. There it says: “Dies Lambertus 1521”.“Consecrated on Saint Lambert 1521” and also known who the builder was, Mr Lubbertus, a local builder. The summer concert agenda booklet is ready in the church. Al verschillende keren ben ik in deze kerk geweest zowel om hier met school het Kerstfeest te vieren of voor een bruiloft of zoals nu voor een begrafenis.
Het is een prachtige oude kerk met mooie gebrandschilderde ramen en mooie schilderijen.
De akoestiek is er schitterend en het is gewoon een mooi gebouw om even binnen te lopen in het centrum van Purmerend.

A Dutch Reformed Church in the village of De Rijp in the municipality of Graft-De Rijp, North Holland province. This late-Gothic church is where the Christian worship and other religious meetings are held. A church is also called House of prayer, prayer house, God's house or temple. This was built in the period 1538 to 1529. The village fire of 1654 engulfed the Church largely in flames. The Church was thereafter rebuilt. Many prominent donors made this church interior awesome like the stained glass windows, the pulpit, the baptism garden, the organ and the ship model hanged up high. Next to the church is the statue of the 17th-century sailor Jan Janszoon Weltevree (in Korea Pak Yon) from De Rij. He was in Korea was captured and brought to the Advisor of the emperor. This church is seen along the main thoroughfare of Rechtestraat close to the library of De Rijp. I appreciate history of a place and in here can be seen the treasures in paintings and many more about the village and its people. Worth the visit. Lovely village. Nice scenery of the polders around. Considering there was already a (Dutch reformed) church in the tiny village of fishermen and their families, this is a rather big alternative church. Even nowadays the village of Egmond aan Zee has just over 5000 inhabitants. The church was built in 1865 with support of the government, whose (new) policy was to ensure people of different religions were treated equal by the secular state (even when living in a predominant Protestant region). Remarkable as well is the denomination of the church: Old Catholic. These are catholics who do not recognize certain dogmas of the Roman Catholic church such as the infallibility of the pope of Rome. There was an earlier church also dedicated to Agnes which disappeared into the sea after a flood. Agnes was a saint who -according to legend- lived during the third century and as a 13 year-old was raped (eventually killed because she declared not to get married to another man). See more..

A wonderful old church from the early 1600's, still in use every Sunday. Make sure you have the option of visiting the inside of the church and often on Sunday afternoons there are 1 hour concerts which will let you experience the wonderful acoustics of this lovely church. See more..

Het kleine witte kerkje van Callantsoog uit 1671 is aardig om even te bekijken na een wandeling door het fraaie Natuurmonument Zwanenwater en het rustige strand van Callantsoog.Het kleine badplaatsje Callantsoog heeft verder weinig bijzondere architectuur maar er is een klein museum in een oude boerderij en VVV Callantsoog in een souvenir-winkel plus de gebruikelijke horeca.De busverbinding naar Groet, Schagen en Den Helder is helaas onderhevig aan wijzigingen in de dienstregeling. "Martinuskerk" is located just behind the small former town hall of Schellinkhout. The church was built from the 14th to 16th century. It was not open. We walked around the church and we were surprised by two Commonwealth War Graves in the graveyard. See more..

The current Berkhout church was built in 1888 as the older building was destroyed by fire. There was no more church services. The Berkhout foundation manages the former church. After restoration in 2013, the building is now a cultural center where many activities take place. But it can also be rented for event etc. See more..

Zo ook de Vermaning van Middenbeemster. Twee z.g. herenbanken, zonder opsmuk. Eenvoudige preekstoel. Klein 19e eeuws orgel, bouwer Pieter Flaes (1812-1889). Het kerkje wordt ook wel de Beemster Vertoeving genoemd en dient tegenwoordig vooral voor concerten, lezingen e.d.. See more..

Op de plek van de huidige (voormalige) kerk stond al in de 12e eeuw een kerkje. Het was zonder twijfel een klein, houten RK kerkje. Vóór de Reformatie (16e eeuw) heette het de Sint Bonifatius Kerk. In de 2e helft van de 16e eeuw werd het een hervormde kerk. De toren van de kerk (althans de fundamenten) is 15e eeuws. De torenspits met balustrade er om heen doet vermoeden dat het enige tijd een stompe toren had. De huidige kerk werd in de jaren 90 grondig gerestaureerd. Mooie rondboogvensters, die waarschijnlijk ooit gebrandschilderd glas hebben gehad. In de kerk een mooi grafmonument (epitaaf) voor Joannes van Gheel, uit 1668. Van Gheel was bij zijn overlijden eigenaar van de Heerlijkheid Spanbroek. Het grafmonument is gemaakt door de beroemde beeldhouwer Romboud Verhulst, die later ook het grote grafmonument voor Michiel de Ruyter in de Nieuwe Kerk te Amsterdam maakte. Wat interieur betreft, een 17e eeuwse preekstoel en herenbank die de moeite waard zijn. Deze kerk deed dienst tot 1989. Later werd de kerk eigendom van de Stichting behoud HV Kerk. Vanaf 2000 een multifunctioneel centrum (muziek en kooruitvoeringen, trouwerijen, exposities e.d.) onder de naam 't Kerkhuys. Kerk ligt er mooi bij, naast het al even mooie 16e eeuwse raadhuisje. De Hippolytuskerk, vernoemd naar een vroeg-christelijke tegenpaus, staat in het dorp Hippolytushoef op een ruime door mensen aangelegde verhoging (terp, wierd). Op deze plek stond reeds in de 12e eeuw een eenvoudige Romaanse kerk, deels opgetrokken in tufsteen. Uit deze periode resteert alleen het onderste deel van de toren, ook van tufsteen. In de 14e en 15e eeuw werd het gebouw vergroot, hier daar kan men zien - vooral aan de toren - dat dit met gewone bakstenen gebeurde. Bij de verbouwingen volgde men de gotische bouwstijl. In 1674 stortte het schip in tgv een zware storm. Koor en toren bleven grotendeels gespaard. Reeds in 1675 begon men met herstelwerkzaamheden. In grote lijnen is de huidige kerk het resultaat van de restauratie 1675. Het koor, dat tgv achterstallig onderhoud instortte in 1893, werd in rap tempo hersteld, gebruikmakend van de de originele tufstenen. Kortom, in de loop der eeuwen is veel gesleuteld aan het gebouw. Niettemin zien we nu een erg mooie, qua stijl harmonieuze, robuuste kerk, met stoere toren met in baksteen opgemetselde spits. In de toren een oude luidklok, uit 1440. Rond de kerk, op de terp, een oud kerkhof. Het interieur is ook de moeite waard. Mooi tongewelf gerestaureerd naar oorspronkelijke kleur. Aan de noordzijde van het schip een mooi gebrandschild raam met o.a. de wapens van de steden van het Noorderkwartier, die met de herbouw rond 1675 hielpen. Eenvoudige preekstoel, 17e eeuws. Heel bijzondere doopbogen, wsl 17e eeuw, van ijzer en niet zoals gebruikelijk van koper. Mooi orgel van Knipscheer, 1870. De kerk wordt nog gebruikt voor diensten, maar er vinden ook regelmatig concerten en exposities plaats. Kortom, een plaatje van een kerk, zowel van binnen als van buiten. See more..

Piepklein Nederlands Hervormd kerkje, gebouwd in 1792. Op deze plek, op een terp, stond voor 1792 een grotere kerk, waarvan niets is te achterhalen. De kerk hoort weliswaar bij het kleine dorp Eenigenburg, maar is gebouwd in het wat geïsoleerd liggende gehucht Surmerhuizen, dat zo'n vier huizen telt, alle rond de kerk gelegen. Dit Surmerhuizen ligt midden in de vlakke polder, maar is omgeven door hoge bomen en bossages. Het ziet eruit als groen eiland in de polder, met de spits van het kerkje net zichtbaar. Héél idyllisch, anderen zullen het na zonsondergang wat eng vinden. In de kerk bevindt zich een oude vroeg 16e eeuwse luidklok, een laat 17e eeuwse preekstoel en een orgel uit 1876. Op het dak van het kerkje rust een z.g. dakruiter, groen geverfde, met spits. Om de kerk een begraafplaatsje. Zo nu en dan zijn er nog kerkdiensten, maar in de zomermaanden worden in het kerkje regelmatig concerten gehouden. See more..

Midden in een woonwijk, wat ingeklemd tussen de huizen, ligt de Stolpkerk van Volendam, ook wel het Stolphoevekerkje genoemd. Deze protestantse kerk werd in 1658 ingewijd en is het oudste nog bestaande kerkgebouw van Volendam. Na de Reformatie bleef de kleine hervormde gemeenschap van Volendam lange tijd aangewezen op de kerkdiensten in Edam. Pas in 1657 kreeg men toestemming om een eigen "predickhuys, school en woonhuys" te bouwen. Waarschijnlijk omdat de kleine gemeenschap een klein budget had, koos men voor een Stolpkerk, welk type kerk vroeger vaker in Noord-Holland werd aangetroffen. Het kerkje werd gebouwd door een molenbouwer uit Hoorn. Het exterieur is sober. Op het hoge dak een torentje (dakruiter) met luidklok. De gevels zijn van hout, zwart geteerd. Ook het interieur is eenvoudig. Mooi gewelfd plafond met groot afgebeeld de wapens van Volendam, Edam, West-Friesland en Holland. Sobere houten preekstoel. Dit kerkje diende als model voor het (nog bestaande) stolpkerkje in Zuidschermer. Het is nog steeds in gebruik als kerk. See more..
