We rented one of the "fluisterbootjes" at De Gouw. A "fluisterboot" is an electric driven small metal basic boot. The boats are perfect to cross through the World Heritage site De Beemster. Which is a fantastic experience. At de Gouw they provide you with a map of the area, including tips for stops during your trip. You hire the boat for a day, which is sufficient to explore the area. We made tour of 6 hours and enjoyed every minute. Tip: Rent a luxury chair with your boat. These are really comfortable. The boats are well maintained and the people at De Gouw are super friendly.See more..

We were interested in getting out on the canal during our trip to Amsterdam. I read about the EBS Wonderland Bus for 10 euros and thought it was a great deal. On their website, it mentions things you can do in each town you can visit on the various routes. For Broek in Wonderland, it mentions that you can rent a fluisterboot or whisper boat and take a boat ride in the canals in the area. It costs 50 euros for 3 hours, plus 50 euros deposit. I looked into renting such a boat in Amsterdam and they wanted 50 euros for ONE hour!. I wasn't sure how interested my teenage daughters would be about this but they loved it! It was nice to get out of the hustle & bustle of the city and enjoy nature. The boat was very quiet and the owner showed us how to operate the boat. You get a laminated map showing you where to go on a 3 or 4 hour ride. There are also written directions. The boat has GPS so if you get lost, you can call them and they can tell you where you are! I was worried that we might get lost but we didn't. We didn't encounter many people on the water so that was nice. We did make a stop along the way. My husband didn't have any problems maneuvering the boat after some practice - he just hit the abutement twice and ran into a canoe on a blind corner (not his fault!). Totally worth the experience! Be sure to make a reservation though. Their place can be a little difficult to find, it's not in the town itself. GPS will get you there!See more..

Unfortunately, we found out the hard way that this business owner does not check that the bikes are in good order before renting them to customers. My friend had to bicycle back to the shop in the dark without working lights, risking his own safety and getting a fine. Then, because we were 6 minutes late returning the bike, she charged him for an additional day. When we told her that the bike was late due to us trying to get the lights on she informed us that, "it's the customer's responsibility to ensure the bike works properly." So, if you rent here be sure to check that the bicycle is fully functional before you ride away because she apparently does not take any safety measures into consideration. After two unsuccessful tries (all bikes were rented out), stumbled over this place. It is right next to the train station in fact - straight up the stairs from central exit, behind the first line of surf shops. it is very efficient. As it was sunny summer day we were by far one of the many city dwellers and tourists looking for a nice afternoon riding along the seacoast. when we came it was fairly late (after noon), there was a big queue - and the rental consultant managed it in a brisk way. The place is handy - they have a shop there with pretty much everything you might need for a day on the beach: swimming suits, towels, sunscreen, etc.. The bikes park is quite extensive, as even with our timing we still managed to get two bikes. Best bet - book them beforehand, online. Instructions fast and brisk, you need id to rent, and you are pretty much all set and ready to go. We paid 8 Euros per bike for the day (to be returned before 6 pm) - which made sense economically for us living in Amsterdam - if we were to bring our own bikes on the train, we would have paid 6 Euro per bike one way - so it was 8 vs. 12. Very friendly service, English, German speaking - as said, they are efficient, fast and to the point.
