Herengracht

At the beginning of the Herengracht we find the Herenmarkt, a square that now serves as a children's playground. Behind the square stands the West India House, built in 1617. From 1624, the building served as the head office of the Dutch West India Company, a multinational which administered the Dutch colonies in North and South America. In the year 1625, a meeting took place in this building, in which it was decided to found the city of New Amsterdam. Which was later renamed to New York.

    Beautiful
This is a beautiful canal to walk around. The architecture of the homes, galleries, and shops is worth a stroll. We arrived in Amsterdam just after sunrise on a Sunday morning, and this whole area was empty of bikes, cars, and pedestrians. It was gorgeous!

Herengracht is one of the many canals running around Amsterdam. There are plenty of boat tours travelling along the canals but you can also admire the houses and boats from the pavement. I would suggest walking against the flow of the traffic so you can see anything approaching and don't get ambushed by a bicycle, car or truck. Fans of the TV show America's Next Top Model may want to hunt down Herengracht 346. This house was the location the models stayed at in Cycle 14. Definitely worth checking out on your visit to the city
