Excellent service

The engine whistles and the fireman shovels coal. Wooden partitions creak, wheels sing and steam hisses. In your carriage you will experience a story from a bygone era. Between the historic towns of Hoorn, Medemblik and Enkhuizen steamtrams meander from village to village across the Westfrisian countryside and a historic steamer with a fantastic saloon-deck sails along the coast of lake IJsselmeer.

    A perfect day out
I booked the full trip of steam train and boat ride online a few weeks ahead. The day before, I realised I had accidentally booked it for the wrong day and we'd missed the trip. I emailed the Stoomtram Museum to explain my error and got a response almost immediately from Marieke confirming that she had reissued the tickets for the correct day. It was so kind and generous of her. We parked at Enkhuizen station and took the regular train to Hoorn. The steam train goes from the same station and there is a small museum to explore as well as the signal box and engine room. There is also a cafe selling drinks and snacks. The trip to Medemblik took about 90 minutes, including a brief stop at Wognum where you can exit the train and explore the station. The carriages have been beautifully restored and the train goes at a leisurely pace so plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the scenery. Medemblik is a lovely little town. The station is only about 100m from where the boat leaves from, but there is plenty of time to have lunch in town or just wander around the town. The boat has plenty of seating inside and out so perfect for all weathers. You can buy drinks and snack on board, but we'd taken a picnic with us so didn't purchase anything. It makes a short stop at the Zuiderzee Museum, before continuing on to Enkhuizen. It really was a perfect day!

    Excellent service
Unfortunately I couldn't get to Hoorn because there was an NS train strike on the day that I had booked to travel. Thanks to an email from the museum, I was made aware that there would be problems the day before. Although I had already booked and paid online, they cancelled my reservation and reimbursed me immediately. I was very impressed by how quickly they responded to my emails, how honest they were about the sitution (which was caused by another company) and how easily they refunded me. I sincerely hope that the next time I travel to the Netherlands, I will be able to travel by train/boat and have the enjoyable experience I missed out on in August.
