Het Museum van de Twintigste Eeuw in Hoorn vertelt aan de hand van honderden voorwerpen en tientallen interieurs het leven in de vorige eeuw. Hoe woonden onze (groot)ouders? Met welk speelgoed speelden kinderen? Wat voor winkels waren er? Hoe werd gekookt? Wat deed men in de vrije tijd? Wat was er op radio of televisie te beleven? Op dit soort vragen krijg je in dit nostalgische museum antwoorden. Er is immers heel veel veranderd in de afgelopen honderd jaar, thuis, op het werk, op school, in winkels. Neem een duik in je eigen verleden en dat van je (groot)ouders en verbaas je over de vele ontwikkelingen. Tentoonstellingen Het Museum toont in een groot aantal vaste opstellingen de vele ontwikkelingen in de twintigste eeuw, maar heeft in drie zalen ook steeds wisselende exposities. Zo is er steeds iets nieuws te ontdekken. Op deze site treft u het meest actuele aanbod van activiteiten en tentoonstellingen aan. The restaurant/cafe was unfortunately closed at the hour that I was there, but I really enjoyed the building. It is indeed a focal point of the harbor, and I hung around enjoying the views and the people- and boat-watching, protected by the unicorn. The statue(s) of the 3 boys is adjacent. See more..

Statenlogement Hoorn was built in 1613 and this building has a double stepped gables. It was used to be the town hall of Hoorn until 1977. It's now a place for wedding or official receptions of the municipal council. It's a national monument. See more..

Sint Jans Gasthuis was built in 1563 and then it didn't operate as a hospital any longer in 1841. The building that has stepped gables (originally) was decorated with beautiful ornaments on both sides. The building is also named "Boterhal" (butter hall) as it was used to be a covered butter market once. At the front facade an edicula has been placed containing an image of John the Baptist, patron saint of the hospital. It is a building with beautiful facade. See more..

We visited Hoorn for a concert. We had a chance to go around in the town centre before the concert. This church is not far from the town square. The door was open so we went inside and took a minute silence. There is a corner where you can burn a candle and pray and was very serene. The painting on the wall is beautiful. Although it was windy and a typical Dutch drizzle rain was coming down, we decided to make a stroll through the park. We were not disappointed! Vereniging Oud Hoorn ( Old Hoorn Association ) was founded in 1917 and makes an important contribution to the execution or promotion of restorations and the critical monitoring of new building plans. The two buildings with stepped gables were used to be the V.O.C. warehouses. It was not open when we're there so we only took some pictures and left. See more..

De "Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie", de VOC, werd in 1602 opgericht en was tot 1800 actief. De VOC kende een centraal bestuur (De Heeren XVII). Haar activiteiten ondernam zij vanuit z.g. Kamers, een soort regionale VOC-vestigingen met een eigen bestuur (de z.g. bewindhebbers). Hoorn huisvestte een van deze Kamers, genaamd de Kamer Noorderkwartier. Oorspronkelijk hielden de bestuurders van de VOC Hoorn kantoor in een pand in de Nieuwstraat, een voormalig klooster. In 1682 bouwde men - in classicistische bouwstijl - een veel groter kantoor, het Oostindisch Huis, in de Muntstraat. Dit gebouw, dat nu grotendeels een woonfunctie heeft, bestaat nog steeds. We zien een eind 17e eeuws zeer breed gebouw met een strakke bakstenen gevel, het iets hogere linkerdeel van de voorgevel is opgehoogd met een fries, waarin het VOC-embleem is geplaatst, dat wordt vastgehouden door vier mollige engeltjes (z.g. putti). Het naastliggende deel van de voorgevel is mooi symmetrisch van inrichting, met in het midden een betrekkelijk klein bordes, met een ingang en bovenraam mooi omlijst met beeldhouwwerk in witte natuursteen. Na het ter ziele gaan van de VOC huisvestte het grote gebouw diverse organisaties. Zo was het geruime politiebureau. Thans herbergt het gebouw dus voornamelijk woningen. Van het vroegere interieur uit de VOC-tijd zal weinig over zijn. Mooi indrukwekkend pand.

Deze plek en het nu erop staande gebouw hebben een lange geschiedenis. Waarschijnlijk midden 15e eeuw stond op deze plek een klooster van de Orde der Kruisheren, die Sint Pieter als beschermheilige hadden. Gedurende de Reformatie werden de kloosterlingen verjaagd en werd de Stad Hoorn eigenaar van het kloostercomplex. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat de gemeentelijke overheid toen de gebouwen al bestemde voor de huisvesting van ouden van dagen. In 1617 vond een grootscheepse verbouwing plaats van het voormalig kloostercomplex. Het werd aanmerkelijk uitgebreid. Zo ontstond het gebouw dat we nu voor ons zien, het "Oud Mann'en en Vrouwen Huys". Een imposant, min of meer vierkant gebouw, aan de Spoorstraat-zijde het Pieterspoortje met het jaartal 1617, enige tijd de hoofdtoegang. Het centrale deel van de gevel aan het Dal laat een mooi gedecoreerde hoofdingang zien met de wapens van de stad Hoorn en de wapens van Regenten en Burgemeesters ten tijde van de grote verbouwing in 1617/8. Dit gebouw doet na al die jaren nog dienst als tehuis voor senioren; het telt zo'n 40 woningen. Het heeft een ruime binnentuin. Het torentje vanuit de tuin zichtbaar herbergt een vroeg 16e eeuwse luidklok, afkomstig uit de in 1692 gesloopte Kruisherenkerk van het oorspronkelijke klooster. Helaas is het interieur niet toegankelijk (wachten maar op volgende Open Monumentendag). Het exterieur is echter alleszins een bezoek waard. See more..

At times, it might seem a little funny; briskly stepping men in their impeccably white suits and their straw hats with colourful ribbons, carrying wooden racks filled with cheeses between them. Yet this scene is part of an age-old choreography, with each step having a meaning all its own. The stacking, the judging, the weighing: it all plays a role.
