A visit to the Netherlands is not complete without visiting the windmills

Be transported back to the 18th and 19th-century Dutch countryside in this residential neighborhood. Zaanse Schans is full of old wooden windmills and houses, some of which were relocated here for preservation. It was actually the first industrial zone in the Netherlands, and the windmills were used for all sorts of things, like grinding spices and producing paint. Today, it's a popular tourist destination where you can explore quaint museums and traditional shops or take a guided tour of the district on foot, boat, or bicycle. Zaanse Schans is a popular day trip option from Amsterdam. – Tripadvisor

    An easy trip from Amsterdam
This is a great trip if you want to get away from the centre of Amsterdam for a day or an afternoon without travelling too far. The easiest way of getting there is to catch bus no 391 from the bus station behind Central Train Station. Buses leave and return about every 15 minutes and drop you at the entrance to the park. It’s about a 45 minute trip. There are various options for payment depending on what you want to see and do. The cheapest option would be to buy a return bus ticket and just walk around the area looking at the windmills and houses. If you then wanted to go inside a windmill or museum you could buy a ticket for that attraction (about 5 to 12 euros). Some of the attractions like the clog maker and the cheese factory are free anyway. We bought the combined day ticket online, which gave free entrance to all the museums, windmills and the bus ticket. We had difficulty scanning the code (off my phone) on the bus but the lovely driver let us on anyway. The help desk at the biscuit museum replaced the ticket on the phone with a paper one and that didn’t scan on the bus either (but again the driver waved us on). Because we had the day ticket we went around a lot of museums and windmills and it was interesting but if you are not into museums I think I would recommend just wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere, especially if it is a sunny day.

A visit to the Netherlands is not complete without visiting the windmills
Can visit Zaanse either by bus or by taking one of the many tours that start from Amsterdam. The visit is definitely a must. The place is open and gets very windy so get dressed accordingly. It is really worth paying the price to enter the 2 working windmills , the one wich crushes minerals to get dye pigments and the big one that is a saw mill. Enjoy the tour in the Cheese factory of Henry Wilig and also watch how they make the wooden clogs . I purchased one of the unfinished products and keep it as a hanging pot.
