Be transported back to the 18th and 19th-century Dutch countryside in this residential neighborhood. Zaanse Schans is full of old wooden windmills and houses, some of which were relocated here for preservation. It was actually the first industrial zone in the Netherlands, and the windmills were used for all sorts of things, like grinding spices and producing paint. Today, it's a popular tourist destination where you can explore quaint museums and traditional shops or take a guided tour of the district on foot, boat, or bicycle. Zaanse Schans is a popular day trip option from Amsterdam. – Tripadvisor See more..

4 Centuries of windmill history Irrespective of when you start or end your visit to the Zaanse Schans with a visit to the mill museum, it is equally inspiring. The interactive exposition tentalizes, makes you wonder and challenges all the way down. It is all about trade, culture, and wealth. But also about hard labour, poverty, and social development. One of the gems is a huge, 11 meter-wide panoramic painting, showing all the windmills in the eastern part of Zaandam around 1800. And there is a dizzling interactive maquette, displaying 1,100 windmills in the Zaanstreek. Opinionated virtual guides travel with you throughout the museum and will comment and explain as you go. Flora, fauna, and a cup of coffee From the museum’s top floor you may enjoy temporary exhibitions and movies. And it gives you a breath-taking view over the scenery. Along the way you will pick up some nice to knows about the surrounding flora and fauna. While enjoying a tasteful cup of coffee or more. See more..

    - Another lovely Saturday of art and food!
Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums • Art Museums
    Het HEM image
It's worth the trip out here to Het Hem. Just because of the historical element is reason enough. But, after getting on the ferry, having a little look at the latest curated exhibition and then getting a snack at the cafe, everything is right with the world. There is music and stuff for kids, a great reading table and a view of merchant barges. What's not to like? See more..
