  2. 4.5 Strand Egmond aan Zee (405 reviews)
    - Wonderful also in October
Spent More than 3 hours Beaches

Just 9 km west from Alkmaar is the quiet sandy beach of Egmond. Perhaps the atmosphere is more relaxed because it is further away from the densely populated areas of Holland. No garbage here or noisy bars, clean water. I combined a visit to the beach with a cycling tour from Alkmaar station and chose a day without much wind. The dunes, green meadows and historic villages in the hinterland are wonderful. See more..

The lighthouse in Egmond aan Zee is open only on Sunday, between 11:00-13:00 o’clock. The time of visit it’s about max 30-35 min. The stairs upstairs are tight but safe. Inside some information about the history of lighthouse and upstairs you can find a person who works there. That’s quiet interesting to look through his eyes at the sea. Please, for your own safety, respect all the rules at this place. € 2 per person- good price for such a Beautiful view and nice experience. See more..

Hidden away in Zuiderstraat lies a gem of a museum showing the over 1,000 year history of Egmond aan Zee. It is well worth a quick visit out of the sun/wind/rain (otherwise known as Dutch weather). You won't be disappointed! See more..

The monumental building can't be missed when entering the village. Still, most people pass it, without realizing you can enter the building. And for free that is. It houses an amazing collection of boat models and even has its own small museum inside. A hidden gem, not to be missed! See more..

  10. 3.5 Katholieke Kerk St. Agnes Egmond Aan Zee (5 reviews)
    - Old Catholic place of worship in predominant Protestant North Holland
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Katholieke Kerk St. Agnes Egmond Aan Zee image
Considering there was already a (Dutch reformed) church in the tiny village of fishermen and their families, this is a rather big alternative church. Even nowadays the village of Egmond aan Zee has just over 5000 inhabitants. The church was built in 1865 with support of the government, whose (new) policy was to ensure people of different religions were treated equal by the secular state (even when living in a predominant Protestant region). Remarkable as well is the denomination of the church: Old Catholic. These are catholics who do not recognize certain dogmas of the Roman Catholic church such as the infallibility of the pope of Rome. There was an earlier church also dedicated to Agnes which disappeared into the sea after a flood. Agnes was a saint who -according to legend- lived during the third century and as a 13 year-old was raped (eventually killed because she declared not to get married to another man). See more..
  11. 3.0 Hervormde Kerk Egmond Aan Zee (4 reviews)
    - Built after a storm
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Churches & Cathedrals
Hervormde Kerk Egmond Aan Zee image
Erected in 1748 seven years after a storm devastated the old reformed church. Only some candles could be saved from the ruin at the bottom of the sea. The design of the building is simple. Basically one hall with high gothic style windows that ensure the interior is light and not dark like in the Middle Ages. See more..
