This is a very nice, small fishing village (located about 22 km from Amsterdam) with traditional Dutch wooden houses. Tourism now is a major source of revenue for this village. Another attraction is a wooden show factory, where sightseers can see how the shoes are made and buy shoes. It can be visit by car, bus, or boat. See more..
- 4.5 Original House of Marken (39 reviews)
-Superb place
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites
At the harbour of Marken you will find a ‘small museum house’. It’s designed as a old original House in Marken. Here you can see the period furniture and decor and you can see how the people from Marken lived in the early days. This tiny house is exactly furnished as how a Marken fishing family lived there until about 1932. The walls of the house are covered with colorful signs and prints. See more..

- 4.5 Rondmarken (11 reviews)
-een mooie natuur-wandeling rond het eiland Marken
City Tours • Cultural Tours
- 4.0 Marker Museum (57 reviews)
-A breath of fresh air and beautifully designed homes and gardens
Spent < 1 hour History Museums
The two curators of this museum are from a family that has lived in Merken for some time. There are lots of glimpses of life in the past. There is a lot of information about historical costumes: what the variations relate to as far as colors, designs and occasions related to costumes. A video depicts a lot of different weather, and differences in how things worked on the island. There is a lot of hand-done stitching of various types, colors and fabrics. Very small but packed with information. Its a Must See, very easy to get to from Amsterdam and very close as well. See more..
- 4.0 Flood memorial 'The Wave' (27 reviews)
-Interesting sculpture
Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
The artwork (The Wave) is also a sofa. To muse, to meet and to remember the power of water. ‘Collaboration’, ‘solidarity’ and ‘victory’ together with the sad side of the disaster; ‘the cry’, ‘despair’ but also ‘the helping hand’ are coming together in The Wave. This memorial has the shape of a boat, and thus symbolically incorporated the significance of Noah’s Ark. See more..

- 4.0 Klompenmakerij (1 review)
-Wooden shoe factory at Zaanse Schans Amsterdam
Speciality Museums
I have always been intrigued by the Dutch wooden shoes for a number of reasons: why were they made, do they hurt to wear, how were they made, and are they still worn? All questions are answered at the show--which lasts about 15 minutes. There is ALWAYS a line for the show. The good part is that when you get inside, they have many antique shoes on display. I think it is worth the wait. Spoiler alert! The shoes are no longer made by hand with a gouge--taking about a day per pair. The new machine(s) produce a pair in a matter of minutes. Decorating the shoes takes a lot of time and effort for the really elaborate ones Obviously, you can buy all the shoes you desire. See more..
