   We stopped at this park to kill a little time as we had arrived early to board the Ferry back to Newcastle and wanted the children to run off some energy. The park is approximately 5-10 minutes from the port and has ample free parking. The entrance is €1 per person and inside the enclosed park there are toilets and a small cafe with plenty of seating where a coffee will also only set you back €1!! The park itself is quite big and has an enormous amount to keep the children entertained there was even an arts and crafts area set up near the entrance. Well worth a trip especially on a sunny day.     The Noordzeekanaal or North Sea Canal is a great waterborne introduction to the Netherlands. The canal links Amsterdam to the North Sea at Ijmuiden, Ijmuiden looked interesting from our ship, with a huge industrial plant/ power station on the opposite canal bank. The canal is, at this point some 200 meters wide, with some small islands by the sea locks, and WW2 fortifications. Bizarrely there were beach huts on one side of the small estuary, and huge wind turbines plus the industrial plant on the other. Huge twin towers on either side of the canal, had people guessing as to what they were, (but photos on TC indicated that they were ventilation towers for the autobahn underneath the canal). Its a real assortment of craft that use the canal, including the fast express hydrofoil from Amsterdam to Ijmuiden. We did not see much wildlife though. The Amsterdam cruise ship terminal is within 800 meters of the Centraal station (beware of cycles if walking between the two) See more..

Velserbeek and Beeckestijn are open to the public;free entry; no entry fee. I enjoyed seeing the many waterfowl and deer living in the enclosure"Hertenkamp" and the outside white-washed stately home now in use by a firm of lawyers.     Firstly you need to book a space in the tour in advance. I had some contact about that and they were very helpful. When we got there the tour was given by a guide which had lots of knowledge. He was able to answer all the questions we asked. He gave a lot of interesting information and explained it in a enthusiastic manner. It is possible to visit the bunkers without a guide or ticket, because the terrain is not locked. Only I would recommend the guide, because of all the information.     Met een groep van zo'n 12 man een rondleiding gehad. Erg interessant en leuk en goed gebracht door de gids. Je bent al gauw een tijdje zoet. Tussendoor ook hapjes en drankjes te verkrijgen. Heel leuk uitje!
    P.S. De beoordeling van Jelle R op deze pagina gaat meer over het bedrijfsuitje dan over een bezoek en rondleiding op Forteiland. Dit is nl niet hetzelfde. See more..

The Engelmunduskerk is right in the centre of this historic village on the edge of the "Noordzee Kanaal".Frequent buses link Velsen to Amsterdam and Haarlem and there is a railway station at Driehuis.     Als je langs de voorzijde van de 12e eeuwse Engelmunduskerk, via de Torenstraat, richting het kanaal loopt, wacht je een verrassing. Je belandt in de oude kern van het dorpje Velsen, nu Velsen Zuid genoemd, maar vaak nog als Oud Velsen aangeduid. Door het graven van het Noordzeekanaal in de 19e eeuw en kanaalverbredingen in de 20e eeuw zijn grote delen van het historische dorpje Velsen verdwenen. Helaas! Wat resteert is een beschermd dorpsgezicht. Aan de Torenstaat tref je het voormalige raadhuis van Velsen aan, dat dienst deed tot 1965. Het bestaat uit twee delen. Het linkerpand kwam tot stand in 1907 en staat op de plek waar een raad- en rechthuis uit 1640 stond. Het rechterpand is een uitbreiding uit 1926. Beide panden zijn gebouwd in neo-renaissancestijl. Een levendig geheel dus. Boven de monumentale uitspringende hoofdingang een balcon, met balustrade en afdak. Daarboven het gemeentewapen en het bouwjaar 1907 afgebeeld. Een rijk ogend gebouwencomplex dat met veel aandacht voor details is neergezet, bv de aardige dakkapellen en het trapgeveltje dat de ingangspartij bekroond. Het gebouw rechts dient nu als kunstenaarscentrum met expositieruimte. In het gebouw links is meen ik een gemeentelijke dienst gehuisvest. Verrassend stukje Velsen! See more..

    We took our car from Germany to Scotland this year. On the way to GB we crossed via Calais and Dover. On our return we used the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. This was certainly the best way to end our two weeks holiday. The boat ride was smooth, the services provided on board more than sufficient for the trip and the staff was friendly. The boat itself does not compare to e.g. the ferry boats from Color Line (Kiel - Oslo), but was sufficient. Next time we will spend a little more money though and book a cabin in the Commodore class. The other cabins are on decks 4-6 and rather noisy plus lots of vibrations from the engine room. See more..
