Cheese Market Edam, North Holland Province, The Netherlands

4.0 (266 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Edam Flea & Street Markets

A good morning out from the city

The cheese Market takes place in Edam on Wednesday mornings in July/August and gives you an opportunity to see how trading used to happen. Catch a 314 bus from Amsterdam Central Bus Station. The village is picturesque and you have an opportunity to purchase cheeses from various stalls (and to taste them) at prices cheaper than the Amsterdam Cheese Shops. An excellent morning out if it is good weather. Crowded but not too crowded.

    Edam cheese market revived!
I'm not a fan of organized tours mostly because I don't like restrictions. If I like a place I want to stay longer, if I don't, why waste any time? We went to Edam by bus, it's about 25 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station. The village is just dreamy, the scenery is breathtaking, just perfect for relaxation! The cheese market show was the bonus! It takes place at the square, every Wednesday in July and August and it's all about tradition. They have it all: a cheerful band, traditional clothes, horse and carriage, it's unbeleivable! You can taste all kind of cheese - my personal favourite contains olives and tomatoes - and purchase as well! You can go for a long walk around, sit on a bench and just enjoy the view! Talking about total relaxation!

    The Countryside around Amsterdam
If you are considering the Country tour tickets from the 'Tour&Tickets' kiosk.. Consider doing it yourself!. Tour prices range from 40euro to 89 euro per person. Take the tram to Central Station (I took #4). When you go in the station, go all the way to the back(waterside) and up the stairs to the bus lanes. Look for bus #316 and purchase a 'Waterland ticket' which is 10euro and good for the day. I got off in Edam first, a charming village and of course, visit the Edam Cheese weighing house. The auction is every Friday. Return to where you got off the bus, go across the street to Lane A and catch bus #118 to Volendam. Get off at 'Zeestraat' and wander down to the harbour. This town is exceptionally touristy but do stop and have a small portion of the little pancakes, delicious! I didn't spend much time here but you could likely wander around for a couple of hours. The boat ride to Marken departs right from the harbour and costs 7.50 euro for a one way ticket. Marken is very small, quaint and has an interesting wooden shoe museum. I stopped for an unremarkable lunch at one of the restaurants on the harbour. To return to Amsterdam, follow sign to bus stop and catch # 311 back to the Central Station through very picturesque countryside. I took around 5 1/2 hours and my transportation costs were 17.50 euro. If you also want to see Zaanse Schans, you can take Bus # 391 from Central Station, but out front, and the bus name is Connexxion.
