The Ruin Church
It's very obviously why the church is called the Ruin Church. It is a ruin but there is also a church in the middle of it and the area is surrounded by a wall. The church's door was closed. The area was used for the event '10 Days Art'. This church is located in the town centre. Saturday is the market day and the stalls are around the ruin wall. It's quite nice to see and it's illuminated in the night.

Matryoshka effect
To prevent a siege of Alkmaar (important 16th century city) Dutch rebels (geuzen) applied a policy of scorched earth in the surroundings. They set fire to the medieval church. The site of the ruin was later used to build a new church (in place since 1597). If you approach the ruin and eventually discover the church inside, it feels like a surprise. Similar to that of opening a matryoshka.

Weirdest thing.
Here's a church that got plundered in 1574 to stop the Spanish from attacking Alkmaar and after that was actually never rebuild, while still in use to day. From the looks of it the massive church tower must have crashed on a big piece of the church. It's amazing that some of the original walls are still standing there. Just walk around it and notice its strangeness.
