Worthy of Stopping to Honour a Great Man

This impressive statue of Cornelis Lely, a Dutch Politician and Engineer who was the brains trust for the Afsluitdijk, spent years (from around 1886) trying to convince the Dutch parliament that the works were needed to prevent flooding. His plans were only approved in 1916 after a major flood occured in the Zuiderzee. The statue was sculpted by Marie Andriessen and dedicated on 23 September 1954, the 100th anniversary of of his birth (23 September 1854). It was great to stop and appreciate the work and effort that Cornelis Lely put into the development and the project managing of the very impressive dyke. Unfortunately, he died in 1929, three years before the construction was complete.

    Statue
There is the big statue at the stop on the road. I think it is the man that designed the dike. The area around it is cool as you can see both the fresh and the salt water at the same time.

    A Monument at Afsluitdijk
Vlietermonument is located on one of the parking place of Afsluitdijk. It is a monument in the shape of a watchtower, designed by architect Willem Dudok. There is a spiral staircase in the stairwell and when you step up, you can see the lake Ijssel only and finally when you're at the top of the balcony you will see the Wadden Sea. By the entrance of the monument, there is a bronze relief by Hildo Krop. It shows three stone setters who place basalt blocks, with the text: "Een volk dat leeft bouwt aan zijn toekomst" ( A people that are alive build their future ).
