  7. 1.0 PJ's Town Crier (1 review)
    - Skip it
    Bars & Clubs
    PJ's Town Crier image
We stopped into PJ's Town Crier to grab a drink and watch playoff hockey. Turns out the bar didn't even have NBC Sports Channel. What the bar does have is: a very strong cigarette odor, a bar tender who cannot do math, lots of guns hanging on the wall and a limited selection of hard liquor. I ordered a vodka soda. I didn't even bother to ask for a lemon, because I was scared that if they did have a lemon, it would have been very old. The bar tender filled a beer mug halfway with smirnoff (top shelf here!), then struggled with the soda gun, but managed to add about another 1/4 of soda water. Then he added ice. I was scared to drink the result, fearing it would be way too strong. However, it was pretty weak and I never felt a thing even though I am a light weight. I strongly suspect the vodka was watered down. See more..
  8. 1.0 Nemasket Kayak Center (1 review)
    - Kayak rentals on the side of a highway.
    Kayaking & Canoeing
    Nemasket Kayak Center image
There was misunderstanding when we reserved the kayak rental. I was under the impression that we were getting to go on a tour, but that was not the case, as we were rudely told when we got there. We were given our kayaks and sent on our way solo to paddle along a busy river's edge. I wouldn't have minded the misunderstanding if they were more pleasant. Also, trying to get the boats in the water was challenging and I was yelled at that I might cut my feet if I take my shoes off, which is what happened because there was glass in the mud. Eventually, the smell of fried foods from the overabundance of restaurants and strip malls and the noise of traffic diminished as we traveled further away from the major roadways. The river itself was beautiful and I would give this business a better review if they were up front about expectations of the tour, if the staff was friendlier, and if the task of getting in and out of the river wasn't so difficult. 12. 1.0 Greenfield/Upper Pioneer Valley Visitor Information Center (1 review)
    - Taxpayer frustration in more ways than one
Sunday: Spent < 1 hour Visitor Centers
If you're on I-91 heading south into Massachusetts and urgently need a rest stop! Don't rely on the state's first rest area to be very convenient or helpful. Signs on the highway direct you to take exit 26 for a rest area and visitor information. The exit ramp places you smack onto a traffic circle awash with plenty of signs to read, but nothing indicating where to find the rest area. Instead, the state uses blue signs with one big question mark (?) on them which you are left to interpret as 'rest stop - visitor information.' But to save money, they've attached these question mark signs to the legs of other signs that have arrows indicating the direction to go. For example, a Park-Ride sign with an arrow pointing to the left has, attached to its leg, a question mark. If you travel three quarters of the way around the traffic circle and look down Rt. 2A, you'll see the rest area signs spelled out once again. The rest area is located behind an Applebee's restaurant. It would have been very convenient if the signs up on the highway featured the M-F, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM hours of operation on them. Instead I parked in an empty lot, approached the building and pulled on the locked doors only then to discover that the facilities are closed on weekends. This was not very convenient. As for myself, I found other facilities, but for those visitors who may not have time for another option, there are several large shrubs surrounding the building and some privacy in the back. For visitors to my home state, seeking travel information, if you're there during normal hours of operation, just remember that this facility doubles as a Registry of Motor Vehicles which aren't really famous for their friendliness or efficiency. For a more accessible and clean public restroom experience, exit the traffic circle and go west on Rt. 2. Stop at the Big Y supermarket just beyond the circle. Welcome to Massachusetts! See more..
