    - Stunning cathedral!
Friday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
    Freiburg Cathedral image
Huge Gothic cathedral that dominates the city of Freiburg. The cathedral dates back to the 13th century and has a fantastic 116-meter tall tower, often considered one of the most beautiful in the world. The tower is the only Gothic church tower in Germany that was fully completed in the Middle Ages (1330), and has lasted intact until the present. Amazingly, the tower survived the WWII bombing of 1944. The church has incredible stained glass windows with interesting inclusions like socks, scissors, pretzels, etc. to relate to people's professions. Inside, there are massive old wooden donation boxes, reinforced with iron bands, with huge locks. There also also four sets of organ pipes including some that are absolutely massive. See more..

St. Michael is first documented in 1156. Throughout the 15th and 16th century modifications were made on this church. There are many beautiful works of art in here, please check out all the pictures and descriptions I post. We walked up the many stairs of the bell tower, it was gorgeous to look out over this beautiful town. Historic, glorious sounding bells that were made from 1299 - 1538 are easily visible as you climb the steps of the bell tower. The high altar with the "Passion and Resurrection of Jesus" was completed in 1460. Other altars are here form the 16th century. The main, big ,crucifix is dated to 1494. Founded in 1183-1184, Bebenhausen Monastery is nestled in the gently rolling hills of the Schonbuch Nature Reserve. In the 19th century, the kings of Wurttemberg coverted parts of the complex into a private hunting Palace. You can still see the original furnishings today. See more..

St. George's Collegiate Church, Tubingen image
After a town walk I discovered the church, and though it was officially closed, the doors were still open and I stepped in. No warden in sight, no other visitors. I sat down in the small chapel to rest and pray. I tried to light a candle, but there were none left. After 10 mins member of staff, presumably a reverend or warden, stepped in and made noises - a clear sign for me to leave, but I did not feel pressured. In October 2011 the church is being renovated. The entrance is therefore difficult to find. See more..

    Herrgottskirche image
We were driving from Frankfurt to Munich, and made the slight detour to see this church. We are so glad we did! We stepped from a charming church courtyard, complete with ancient carved tombstones, into the church's dim exterior. It's freezing cold in there, but the second our eyes caught sight of the altarpiece, we were unaware of such mundane considerations as temperature. The altar is just stunning. I stood there with dropped jaw for a long time before I could move. They did let me take photos as long as I disabled the camera's flash, and there was enough light to get a pretty decent picture (see attached). The rest of the church has some interesting artwork, and an interesting story of its founding, but clearly the main claim to fame is the altar. Gorgeous, inspired carving, whether of a disciple's face, billowing folds of a robe, or intricate patterned framework. If you can get there, go! See more..
  15. 4.0 Evangelische Stadtkirche (64 reviews)
    - Unusual and attractive church
Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Evangelische Stadtkirche image
We all know instinctively that churches are designed and built either on a rectangular or a cross-shaped pattern. Except that this one isn't - it was built with 2 almost identical naves at right angles to each other, with the altar at the intersection point. Somebody thought that there should be separate seating areas for men and women, and this l-shaped design was the result. What made our visit much more poignant was to read about the war-time destruction and subsequent re-building and restoration of the church. Worth pausing a moment and offering a few words to whatever deity you choose. See more..

    The Old Synagogue Square image
A model of the destroyed Synagogue is one of the reminders of the terrible night in November 1938 when the Synagogue was set ablaze, along with many others throughout the country. With a footprint of the building reflected in the water feature, it is today a open tranquil space. Interestingly there was a proposal in 2016 that the name of the square be changed from Old to Destroyed, to more accurately reflect the fate of the Holy Place. In the following year the renaming proposal was no longer pursued. See more..

    - Impressive oldest church on Island Reichenau
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Muenster St. Maria und Markus image
Very impressive church. It is the oldest church on the island, the Abbey of St. Mary and Markus. The former monastery church was founded in 724. The oldest parts are the crossing arches and the eastern cross aisle from the cross basilica consecrated in 816. The present appearance of the west-work was consecrated in 1048 in the presence of Emperor Henry IV. The former convents building serves as rectory and the administration of the municipality. In the associated very spacious cellar, the winegrowers' association presses the "Reichenauer" wine. In the treasury of the abbey numerous reliquaries and other cult objects from the 5th - 18th century can be seen. See more..

As its name suggests, this charming little church on the island of flowers joins to the castle. Six years ago, we were very lucky because a small orchestra practiced for a wedding a Whitney Huston's song, "A Moment in Time" on their accordions. It perfectly suited to the atmosphere of the church, and it was such an experience that we stayed far behind the planned time. Now, did not have such luck. We shared this richly decorated Baroque style church only with other photo-making tourists. See more..

This place was monastery, and it remained catholic until 1600. During the 30 years war again it was catholic, but in 1649, eventually it became evangelic again.Today it is evangelic, and the interior is simple. But the church itself is interesting, parts of it has a history back to 1178, and even though changes it is today much like it was about 1300.- It is nothing left of the monastery. Therefore please have a look inside. You will find Romanesque and early Gothic details. It is also a modern, but beautiful stained glass window. Freilichtmuseum Heuneburg -Keltenstadt Pyrene image
The open-air museum Keltenstadt Pyrene (“Freilichtmuseum Heuneburg - Keltenstadt Pyrene”) is 2 kilometres north of the village of Hundersingen near Herbertingen. It is located on a hill, overlooking the Danube River. There are many archaeological finds on display that were excavated in this region. You can visit a replica of a Celtic manor as well as the reconstruction of houses where people lived 3000 years ago and one segment of the rebuild city fortifications. The open-air museum “Freilichtmuseum Heuneburg - Keltenstadt Pyrene” is connected with the Celtic Museum Heuneberg (Keltenmuseum) – which has also been reviewed on Tripadvisor – via an 8 kilometre long hiking trail. The circular walk is called “Archäologischer Rundwanderweg Heuneburg”. But you don’t need to walk all the way. There is a large parking lot if you go with your own vehicle. I recommend going to both, the open-air museum “Freilichtmuseum Heuneburg - Keltenstadt Pyrene” and the Celtic Museum Heuneberg (Keltenmuseum). They are both worth a visit anyway and only 2 kilometres apart from each other, plus there are some obvious advantages: Firstly you get a discount if you buy tickets for both at the same time. Secondly, the information given makes much more sense, after seeing the digging site. And thirdly, the open-air museum offers an inexpensive snack bar where you can relax with coffee and cake after taking in lots of information. Unfortunately the information boards provided are in German only, but both places are worth a visit nevertheless since they are beautiful sights itself. See more..
