Visited the Esslingen Christmas market while we were staying in Stuttgart, where do I begin, excellent medieval themed Christmas market, stall holders dressed in costume, some giving exhibitions of their trades, very knowledgeable about the times they were depicting. Street musicians/minstrels strolling around the streets, Esslingen itself is a very pretty town with lots of half timbered buildings, well worth a visit any time of year but especially at Christmas time. The town is easily accessible from Stuttgart main train station, trains run every 15 minutes or so. See more..

For nearly a month leading up to Christmas, the Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt welcomes over 3 million visitors to shop for wood toys, figurines, and antiques and warm their bellies with mulled wine and fresh gingerbread. Little ones scoot about Children's Fairyland, riding the steam train, designing their own candles, and snacking on chocolate-covered fruit. The market's nativity scene features live lambs, sheep, donkeys, and a goat, and crowds gather for daily concerts performed by choirs and music groups from the Stuttgart region. A tradition dating back over 300 years, the Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt stands as one of Europe's oldest and most lively Christmas markets. See more..

    Baroque Christmas Market image
The Ludwigsburg Christmas market might not be the biggest one in Germany, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful ones as the market place is sourrounded by two churches, beautiful old houses and is enlighted by several chains of lights and shining golden angels to underline the baroque atmosphere in town (the market is not far away from the Ludwigsburg Residential Palace). Handcrafted goods, jewellery, decorations, scarfs, lambs wool, candles etc. are sold in neatly arranged booths and also food & beverages that are sold are not just the ordinary ones. My highlight this year: mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugarloaf lit above it (in German: Feuerzangenbowle) which looked just awesome ... See more..

See more..
