    Museums-Bergwerk Schauinsland image
Since 1976 Forschergruppe Steiber works to give you an authentic experience of three characteristic mining periods at the mining museum Schauninsland. Our tours, between 45 min and 2.5 h long, teach you about metal ore mining and the history of technology in a unique environment. The 45-min tour without minimum age enables you to get a first impression of the museum. Normal footwear and street cloths are sufficient. We also have tour leaflets in English. Please do not hesitate to ask for them! We avoid technical terms and with basic German skills you will be able to follow our guides’ explanations. Throughout the year we also offer special tours in English. We recommend our 2.5 h tour under the following conditions: Minimum age 12 years (exceptions possible for 10- and 11-year-olds, please talk to the supervisor). Normal fitness and a good physical constitution. Firm, closed footwear and sturdy hiking clothing. In the individual case we can help out with rubber boots and jackets; for 5 € we will provide you with disposable overalls. With the miner’s greeting ‘Gluckauf’ we wish you an interesting visit See more..

    - For the Fossil Hunter - Ammonites
    Spent 1-2 hours Mines
    Schieferbruch Kromer image
This is by far one of the best fossil sites I have been too in regards to finding ammonites. You could almost close your eyes and guarantee and get one. It is a shale quarry which makes it easy to break for kids. The site charges a small fee and also has hammers and chisels for rent for also a very small fee. They have porta potty's and a covered picknick area. See more..

  8. 4.5 Bergwerk Finstergrund (7 reviews)
    - Don’t go if you don’t speak German!
    Spent 1-2 hours Mines
    Bergwerk Finstergrund image
Not a complaint at all as it’s entirely reasonable for an attraction in Germany to be in German but just a heads up for other Non- German speaking tourists. I think the tour, led by an ex-miner was probably excellent but there was only the odd few sentences in German on display in the caves. The train ride into the caves were fun and the caves interesting but I think we missed 80% of the content because we didn’t understand the tour. My score reflects what it would get if we’d understood! Also, they really need to get helmets that fit smaller kids. Every few minutes a kid dropped one as they were all far too big. It must drive the guides bonkers. See more..

    Silbergrundle Erzbergwerk image
See more..
