    - Well worth a vist
    Caverns & Caves
    Erdmannshöhle image
The Black Forest area of Germany is not an area that has may caves so on seeing this one I had to visit. There is plenty of parking with toilet and catering facility available (also a shop selling souvenirs). As well as inside and outside seating. The cave was well lit and lots of intresting formations to see as well as an underground river. The guide who took us around was excellent and gave the tour in both English and German. See more..

    - Nice location

We have been at the Nebelhöhle on a nice sunny Sunday. We had good luck, because there was still some snow and before we went to the cave the children could play. The man on the entrance was very friendly to explain what is expecting us in the cave. We really liked it. One hint, sometimes we needed to ask what is the way - maybe some signs could help. Went here as near to our camp site and it was a fantastic outing, well connected by cycle paths. Good value toi explore the caves, with audio descriptions in a number of lanuages. very cool which was great as it was a hot day. Took children aged 3, 7, and 9 and they all managed fine, helped the little one as some steps and ladders are very steep. Great cafe for before and after snacks and drinks. Big carpark, and cycle park, and great playground. See more..

  9. 4.5 Sontheimer Cave (8 reviews)
    - Bit disappointing.
    Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Caverns & Caves
    Sontheimer Cave image
A bit disappointing to be honest. Nicely lit but not a lot of stalactites or stalamites. The guide spoke with a strong Schwäbisch accent and even my native German wife had trouble understanding her. We felt like asking whether there was a Hochdeutsch version of the tour...! Worse, she didn't seem to have much to say, and was more relying on people asking questions. It is nice that it is run by a Verein, and we had some drinks at the cafe. See more..
  10. 4.5 Schillerhöhle (5 reviews)
    - Great little cave for kids to poke about in
Spent 2-3 hours Caverns & Caves
Schiller cave is accessible from the top of the Mountain (aprox 650 meters) by parking in the village of Wittlingen and walking through the woods along a well signposted route, or from a car park at the bottom of the mountain and walking through the woods and through the 'Wolf Gorge' upwards towards the top of the mountain. Either route will take you through some lovely woodland landscape and the Gorge itself is also particularly stunning. When you get to the cave, be careful where you walk around the edge of the path, it's a particularly long drop downwards if you loose your footing! Ideally you'll need a helmet (or at the very least a hat or cap to protect your head) and a head torch, good sturdy shooes (as the path inside can be slippy and wet) and a long sleeve jumper or jacket as the caves around here are about 8 degrees in temperature. And off you go and explore! You really can't go wrong in this cave, its ideal for beginners and kids and just make sure you leave everthing as you found it, don't use naked flames in the cave and be respectful of other cave inhabitants - human and batlike! Oh, and make sure you visit between mid April and the end of October as the cave will be closed at other times because of our furry bat-friends. If you go right down to the 'bottom' of the cave please be careful, there is a lot of lime sludge (up to 20cm) which tends to suck visitors in and you might end up looseing a shoe! Also prepared to get a bit dirty and muddy, as I said, a great cave for children! Top off the trip with a little hike up to the castle ruins for a spectacular view of the valley below and maybe take along some BBQ stuff for a stop at one of the grill and picnic places along the way. - Interessant
    Spent < 1 hour Caverns & Caves
See more..
  13. 4.0 Geisterhoehle (1 review)
    - Fantastic views but only in Summer
    Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Caverns & Caves
    Geisterhoehle image
Rechtenstein Cave, also know more popularly as "Geisterhöhle" or Ghost Cave in English, is located 6m high, up steep steps, thankfully there is a rail to hold on to. The view from the steps on your way up/down, as well as in the cave's entrance is beautiful, as it looks over the Danube and the surrounding valley. If visiting, it is important to bring a torch/flashlight as there is no lighting inside the cave, and it gets quite dark away from the entrance, and into the passages. From a historical point of view, this was originally a bear cave and was used by humans during Roman times, but no evidence has been found here of any prehistoric use by humans. Although a must see location when in the area, sadly this cave is closed during Winter to allow bats their privacy. Highly recommended, but don't expect a tour guide or leaflet. See more..
