  1. 4.5 Freiburg Cathedral (2.564 reviews)
    - Stunning cathedral!
Friday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
    Freiburg Cathedral image
Huge Gothic cathedral that dominates the city of Freiburg. The cathedral dates back to the 13th century and has a fantastic 116-meter tall tower, often considered one of the most beautiful in the world. The tower is the only Gothic church tower in Germany that was fully completed in the Middle Ages (1330), and has lasted intact until the present. Amazingly, the tower survived the WWII bombing of 1944. The church has incredible stained glass windows with interesting inclusions like socks, scissors, pretzels, etc. to relate to people's professions. Inside, there are massive old wooden donation boxes, reinforced with iron bands, with huge locks. There also also four sets of organ pipes including some that are absolutely massive. See more..

  4. 4.0 Student Jail (Studentenkarzer) (428 reviews)
    - Remarkable creativity in a setting you are likely to clearly remember
Friday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Historic Sites
    Student Jail (Studentenkarzer) image
I suppose there are other places in the world where university students incarcerated for mostly petty crimes were permitted to express remarkable artistic creativity on the walls — and where that creativity is still possible to see. But there certainly cannot be many, and it is remarkable to see the results of these students' creativity right in front of you from floor to ceiling. This is an unusual if not unique attraction, and while some of the cathedrals and castles one might visit may sometimes blend somewhat in our memories over time, this will always stand out and be clearly remembered. Most worthwhile. See more..
  5. 4.0 Baroque Palace Mannheim (403 reviews)
    - Grand Buildings-Built to Impress!
Friday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites
    Baroque Palace Mannheim image
When you see the main front courtyard and the massive building to your front and surrounding you on two sides.....well, you begin to think, "I didn't allow enough time to see this one!" Don't be afraid, most of the building is now part of the University so, you shouldn't need more then 2 or 3 hours. Seriously, 2 or 3 hours if you want to read everything. If you are content to just listen to the audio tour (available in English) then you can get a good look in 1.5 hours.....but, take 2 if you can, they have really good exhibits. They have bathrooms and an elevator/lift so, wheelchair accessible as well. We saw at least two weddings while we were there so, beware, if your not careful you may end up in someone's "forever" pictures! Enjoy! See more..

  7. 4.0 Heidelberg Tun (365 reviews)
    - A little difficult to "roll out the barrel" with this one!
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Heidelberg Tun image
The Heidelberg Tun is a monstrous wine barrel located in the Heidelberg Castle, built in 1751, reputedly requiring 130 oak trees in the construction. It's approximately 8 meters in diameter and holds 229,000 liters. Some claim it's the largest in the world, but even if not, it's one huge barrel! You can climb stairs alongside and even walk on a platform built on top of the barrel. Amusingly, unaware tourists inevitably line up for photos of another (very) large barrel in the room before the Heidelberg Tun, thinking it's the one. While, it's also massive, it pales in comparison to the real deal and you'll hear tourists shriek in amazement when they encounter the real "big daddy"! See more..
  8. 4.5 Heiligenberg (335 reviews)
    - One of the most beautiful places Ive seen
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Observation Decks & Towers
    Heiligenberg image
Surprising to me, this is one of the prettiest cities Ive ever visited, it is the epitomy of "quaint" it looks like something out of a German movie set. A quiet lazy river runs right through the center of Heildelberg, and the cities rises up on each side of the river creating a steep valley to the center of town. There was some cute shopping not too touristy though, some very good pubs with above averagetypical pub fare. The poeople were very friendly and the city is so clean and safe. Dont for get to visit the castle! See more..

  11. 4.5 The Leaning House (294 reviews)
    - Quaint leaning house that serves as a hotel in this lovely old city.
    Historic Sites
    The Leaning House image
As you wander around the Fishermen's Quarter of the old part of Ulm you're likely to stumble on this lovely, quaint old building. It's unique in the way that it leans at quite an impressive angle. It also serves as a hotel and I believe that the rooms slope as well as the rest of the establishment. It even appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the "Schiefstes Hotel der Welt" - 1997. If you want some perspective to the degree of "leaning" there is an old fashioned looking key hanging from the roof of the house over the little stream below. Intriguing. I just wonder how long it will take for the whole structure to somehow slide into the water... See more..
  12. 4.5 Historisches Kaufhaus (269 reviews)

Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites
    Historisches Kaufhaus image
Historisches Kaufhaus, from 1532 or Historical Merchant House located on Munsterplatz, on plaza where the magnificent Munster Cathedral is (from its side). Now, salute the Habsburgs, who are represented by the statues and the coat of arms on the Historical Merchant House. This was the trading and customs center in the 16th century, and briefly housed the state parliament after the war. Its deep red color can be found on several other buildings in town. During the Middle Ages around here, a red paint job on a building indicated it was a place where you'd be required to pay a tax or fee. Voilà!!! See more..

    - Esteemed from the 13th century
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Martinstor image
In the late 18th century certain interests deemed this grand tower an obstacle to evolving transport routes and wanted to demolish it. Fortunately they were persuaded otherwise by a wise Mayor and it continues to be gloriously extant, A busy tram line now runs through the central opening that was widened by the above mentioned Mayor, as part of his campaign for its preservation. One of five defensive towers in the city wall, it played a key role in warding off attackers. Gorgeous dark and light stonework is admirable. On one side a plaque with a double-headed eagle is enshrined. On the reverse an ornate rectangle has elaborate script. Clocks with golden hands and hours are towards the top on two faces. See more..

  21. 4.5 Schauenburg (100 reviews)
    - Nice Ruins to visit
    Historic Sites
    Schauenburg image
The Ruin of the Schauenburg Castle is placed in the little city of Oberkirch located in the Renchtal, part of the black forest. With 3 big parking lots up front it's easy to access and with wide trails to the ruins also easy to reach by foot. No entry fee, which is nice. The ruins are not very big, but well conserved. You can explore the whole castle within 30 minutes. Not a lot of information provided, but the single big information board, gives you some good insights in the medieval "Game of thrones'' that happened here. You can climb on some walls, enter some small rooms, but mostly have nice sit-ins and a little picnic in nature while enjoying very beautiful views. The ruins are also start and end point of a lot of hiking routes - so overall it's more a quick stop on a bigger activity as the main event. I was there around noon and it was already quite crowded - my recommendation is to check out the morning or evening hours to get a nicer, calmer experience. See more..

    The Old Synagogue Square image
A model of the destroyed Synagogue is one of the reminders of the terrible night in November 1938 when the Synagogue was set ablaze, along with many others throughout the country. With a footprint of the building reflected in the water feature, it is today a open tranquil space. Interestingly there was a proposal in 2016 that the name of the square be changed from Old to Destroyed, to more accurately reflect the fate of the Holy Place. In the following year the renaming proposal was no longer pursued. See more..

We arrived at this Museum 40 minutes before the closing time, and listening to the suggestion of the curator, we decided to visit again in the following morning. Next day, an audio device guided us through so many exhibits including Hesse's private letters with pretty water-color sketches, more serious water-color paintings, pictures of him and his family in various periods, and new books published all around the world etc, in addition to some art works by 3 of his contemporaries from Calw. The curator lady was so kind that she often came upstairs to check with us and talk about the great author and his times. I felt like I had done with my lifetime pilgrimage. See more..

  31. 4.5 Hirsau Schloss (39 reviews)
    - Very old
    Historic Sites
    Hirsau Schloss image
It is located next to the monasterial ruins but as one is securing the ruins again one is not allowed to go inside, a pitty but understandable. It is a big part of the monasterial ruins of Hirsau Abbey. In 1586 - 1592 had the Württemberg Duke Ludwig von Württemberg, had a three wing-Castle in the Renaissance style built next to the ‘Klausure’ at the Abbot house (architect Georg Beer). Destroyed by French troups in 1692 as castle and monastery were set on fire. First, however, mostly roofs were missing, until 1808 the masonry of castle and monastery also disappeared, it was used for the reconstruction of Calw. Of Castle and cloisters only walls remain, of Church and monastery only the foundations. See more..

    Oberschwäbisches Museumsdorf Kürnbach image
Great day spent walking through the 30+ open air farm houses, working shops, stables, town government house (rathaus), and outbuildings, including one of the electrical substations that you see across Germany. All is in German, no English translation. The houses and buildings were from pre-1600 through 1980 and were moved and reconstructed here. There are working chores (candle making and bread backing) so lots to do for kids. There are farm animals (goats, cows, chickens). There is a very broad array of buildings where in each you can not only move through time, but also see the changes over times through items ranging from looms to tractors to fire engines. There is a restaurant on site. For 5.50 Euro this is a bargain and well worth the time spent. Nearby is the Kloster Schussenreid, also worth the visit for the library and church. We stopped on a rainy day, so the pictures don't show the true colors. See more..
