This home is magical! I can't believe we did not make the day trip sooner! Hildene was only an hour's drive for us from the Albany area, but honestly I would have driven hours to see this beauty! The area is charming, and our entire experience was worth every penny of the very reasonable admission fee for a self guided tour. The entire day, from the lovely gift shop to the fantastic docents in the house, was wonderful! My favorite thing about the house was the 1908 pipe organ that played every 15 minutes! It's something you really have to experience! It was also cool to see Lincoln's top hat & mirror from the White House dressing room. My only regret was that we missed the Pullman car, which I hear is a must see (but we will be back)! I wish we had allowed more time. We ended up spending a lot of time in the gardens because they were so spectacular. The views were breathtaking! Don't miss out on seeing Hildene. One of my new favorite places!See more..

This is a whole town that has been left in the 1900's. There is his birthplace, childhood home, and old barn. It was excellent to see - and I really enjoyed it. Just be sure to realize this is more of an old time tour of his childhood and life at the time than it is focused on his presidency. There is a small museum but it didn't cover his presidential campaign or what he really did during his presidency. Definitely do the guided tour (included in the $10 price). We spent almost 3 hours.See more..

4.5FH Gillingham & Sons General Store(92 reviews) - A classic Thursday: 8:30 AM - 6:30 PM Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops • Historic Sites
The size and shape of Woodstock, Vermont, was quite different in 1886 when Frank Henry Gillingham opened his store that stood in the heart of this small New England town. Reverently the community has preserved the physical buildings and the spiritual essence of an earlier day. Located in the village center is F.H. Gillingham & Sons General Store. The faces of the townsfolk may have changed and the store’s inventory may have evolved, but the family running the store has remained the same. Today's owners are descendants of both F.H. Gillingham and Franklin Billings. Frank & Jireh Billings proudly carry on the family tradition that their great–grandfather started 132 years ago.See more..

Arguably the finest intact Victorian mansion in New England, the house was built in 1864-65 by attorney and entrepreneur Trenor W. Four generations of the family have lived on the property, including two governors, Hiland Hall and John G. McCullough. 4.5Auer Family Boathouse(31 reviews) - A wonderful Cultural experience! Historic Sites
We rode by this place on our bikes and stopped to see about kayaks. It is a great place to visit. The kayaks were reasonable at $10 an hour and they give you directions to go down the Winooski River. We saw tons of birds and turtles and lots of green frogs called tontons. After our kayak we had popsicles and talked to the owners (sister and brother aged 89 and 93) They told us those frogs were what they ate during the depression and showed us the little pitchforks they used to trap them with. They have a beautiful view. Make sure to sit in the swinging chairs and take it all in.See more..

The Joslyn Round Barn was Built by Clem Joslyn in 1910. Clem eventually sold the farm to his cousin Ralph, who spelled his last name with an “i” (go figure!). It was used as a dairy barn from 1910 until 1969, when Marge Joslin said to Ralph, "either the cows go or I go." Marge (and Ralph) stayed until 1986 when Jack and Doreen Simko bought The Round Barn Farm in March of that year. They spent eighteen months restoring the farmhouse into a seven guestroom Vermont inn, then turned their attention to the Round Barn.See more..

Put in at the McCuen Slang Access, south of Chimney Point, for a day of kayaking on Lake Champlain. Headed south from the access then north, as we returned to the landing we passed the Chimney Point landing and noticed the presence of a dock and a port-a-pottle. Getting back to the McCuen Slang Access we decided to check out the Chimney Point Site. Being November the site was closed. This was not a problem as there were a number of signs placed on the site which told the story of the history and significance of the site.See more..
