  9. 4.5 Burra Railway Station (88 reviews)
    - A Community Triumph and a Joy for the Tourist
    Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
    Burra Railway Station image
It is amazing what a community with dedication and drive can achieve. The Burra Railway Station restoration is one such project. From being a very busy mid-north South Australian railway station to being closed in 1988, the station went into decline and disrepair. The station nowadays boasts a B’n’B, a developing railway museum and is home to a Diprotodon display. Also there is Edie, a 1917 Commonwealth Railways kitchen and dining car (number ED22) that is being refurbished trackside. I enjoyed the wander through the museum side of the station recalling my younger days of train travel through similar stations. The volunteer staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the station and the future plans for redevelopment. The Burra Railway Station is a must to visit if in the Burra area. Return? Already added to the bucket list and even contemplating a stay at the B’n’B. See more..

    - See as much or little as you like
Thursday: 9:30 AM - 4:00 AM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
    Axel Stenross Maritime Museum image
This is a very interesting museum with lots abut boatmaking, local boating, & the story of Axel himself, who amazingly only died in the 1980s but had been a boy & learned his trade in the old days of sail! There is a lot to look at if you are inclined, but we preferred to just get a feel of each area, & the boats outside. The volunteer guides were available if we wanted to ask questions, but were not overpowering or bombarding with information. A nice start to the visit was a short video. Well worth a visit, and only $10 full adult price. We strolled here along the beach from Pt Lincoln foreshore, about 15mins, & back along the road. See more..
  13. 5.0 Koppio Smithy Museum (64 reviews)

    Koppio Smithy Museum image
After travelling for about 12ks on a good but unsealed road, we were beginning to wonder what we were going to find. However we were not disappointed - we spent over two hours wandering around the very interesting and well laid out exhibits. A lot of work has been done by the Caretaker to improve both the exhibits and the garden and it shows. I fully recommend this museum and believe there is something for everyone, even children, which for them is a cute and unusual playground. Snacks can be purchased as well. See more..

This quirky museum has a multitude of different windmills that have been an important part of Australia's farming heritage. 16. 5.0 Millicent National Trust Museum (55 reviews)
    - This is one Australian regional museum that must be visited!
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Millicent National Trust Museum image
The Millicent National Trust Museum is one of the most outstanding regional historical museums I have visited. Accessed through the Information centre, the museum utilizes multiple historical buildings and links them together in focusing on local life. Information pamphlet indicates a walking path that takes in all exhibits in sequence. Highlights for me were the Shipwreck Room, The Helen Hughes Collection of fashion and the biggest display of varying horse carriages that I have ever seen – from buggies, street cabs to hearses. I still have a question – “Who was Helen Hughes?” The one thing that you need if visiting is time! There is so much to see that it is a dis-service to rush it – allow at least 2 hours – longer if you are able to. Compliments to the staff who maintain the museum and to the Information Centre staff for their friendly assistance. Return? Most definitely on the bucket list when back in Millicent. See more..

There is much to see in the rooms of this cottage and in the surrounding grounds. Hope Cottage is one of 3 original cottages, Faith, Hope and Charity. Charity is still next door but is a private residence. The National Trust has restored and maintains this Cottage and Museum and the Volunteer staff were only too happy to explain things to us. Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Speciality Museums
    Goolwa Motor Museum image
Michael Finnis is passionate about cars. Former racing car driver, his passion is very infectious as he will happily spin stories of years past and his experiences. At the end of a visit, it becomes difficult to decide which was better – the cars or Michael’s reminiscing! The wide variety of vintage and restored cars are on display in a large shed with a mezzanine floor. Michael gives a personal introduction about the museum as you enter the museum, and then you are free to explore. Information about each vehicle is on display on front of the relevant car. For the young at heart, there is also a wide collection of Matchbox model cars. With a very nominal entrance fee, the time spent sharing Michael’s passion is well worth it. Whether an avid car fanatic or just someone who can appreciate past cars, you will find the time spent well worth it. Photos are permitted. Return? It is on the ever growing list and look forward to being mesmerized again by Michael’s yarns! See more..

The Variety of goods on display which included hundreds of Matchbox type cars presented behind glass is unbelievable The work that has been undertaken by this couple in presenting a wide variety of Memorabilia representing, household products, toys, dolls, bicycles, and protypes etc was certainly a step back in time!
