  3. 4.5 Kanku - Breakaways Conservation Park (434 reviews)
    - A spectacular view of the remnants of an ancient inland sea
Spent 2-3 hours National Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Deserts
Kanku - Breakaways Conservation Park image
This is a spectacular place to visit when in outback South Australia near Coober Pedy. Whilst it appears to be a long view of nothing it is quite breathtaking when looking at it in person. The history boards tell tales of both local Aboriginal history and history of the dog fence that covers 3 states. The breakaway also is remarkable in the fact that you are standing in an ancient inland sea and this is how it looks today. The drive is easy to access and can be done within an 1.5 hours. Absolutely would recommend to stop by! See more..
  4. 5.0 Flinders Ranges National Park (257 reviews)
    - A range of walking options for all fitness types
    National Parks • Parks
    Flinders Ranges National Park image
St Mary's peak is the trek we chose. I wouldn't recommend attempting it unless you are not afraid of heights and are reasonably seasoned at climbing over rocks and steep slopes. I really would stress not to take kids, there is one part that requires scaling the side of a rockface from a height. Make sure you bring enough water. We completed it in 9 hours taking the short way up and the long way down including a decent rest at the top. The pictures speak for themselves. See more..
  5. 4.5 Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park (249 reviews)
    - Beautiful single cave
Thursday: Caverns & Caves • Parks
    Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park image
This is only one small cave but it is stunning. They have added in concrete paths so it is accessible to all. There is a small ‘pond’ in the middle. You can walk around it in a few minutes but it’s taking the time to really look and enjoy the detail that makes it worth it. There is also a walking path outside over the caves which is a nice way to pass time before or after your tour. We also had a lovely guide. See more..

  7. 5.0 Islands Caravan Park (179 reviews)
    - The caravan park to stay at in Streaky Bay
    Parks
    Islands Caravan Park image
This caravan park ranks as one of the best in our months travel in South Australia. They have very clean, good amenities offering private bathrooms, ultra clean kitchen, comfortable TV / recreational room, good laundry facility and a small cool swimming pool. And then there are the super large caravan sites with screening hedges so your neighbour is not on top of you. And one can get a site with a sea view. The beach is a few steps away down a path in front of the caravan path. The only downside is that one can only get wifi & your hotspot access from the rec room, but as the rec room is comfortable and quiet, we did not find this an issue. To top it off the sunsets are sensational over the bay from the beach. See more..
  8. 4.5 Point Labatt Conservation Park (115 reviews)
    - What a little gem
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks
    Point Labatt Conservation Park image
We travelled out here whilst staying at Streaky Bay on advice that this was well worth the drive and it was. It is a dirt road the whole way but that didn't bother us. The road was being graded the day we travelled it and so it looks well maintained. The scenery on the drive in was beautiful. When we arrived we got to see about a dozen seals having a snooze on the beach and the views were breath taking. This was a truly spectacular place to visit, well worth it. Can be quite windy and therefore a little cold so bring a jacket as it is so worth spending time looking and watching from the viewing platform. See more..
  9. 4.5 Lincoln National Park (97 reviews)
    - Mixed feelings
National Parks • Beaches • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Lincoln National Park image
This park is some 25 km south of Port Lincoln, and situated on a peninsular. There is a small entry fee to be paid at the Visitors Centre in Port Lincoln. I have given this park four stars, and perhaps that needs some explaining. We drove in to Stamford Hill which I climbed, and then had lunch at Surfleet Cove. A park like this is a wonderful asset for conservation purposes, and probably for camping, hiking and fishing. The amenities are excellent and 5* : sealed roads, signage, toilets, and everything well maintained. I enjoyed investigating the coastline at Horse Rock (but where was the horse?), and the hike up Stamford Hill led to good but distant views. But I couldn’t get excited about the endless sameness of the low growing trees and scrub. I felt rather sorry for Matthew Flinders and his crew, landing here and desperately searching for water. So, only 3* from us for enjoyment. See more..
  10. 4.5 Coffin Bay National Park (95 reviews)
    - Experience to be remembered
National Parks • Beaches • Geologic Formations
    Coffin Bay National Park image
My best friend decided it was time to get my 4WD dirty. Coffin Bay National Park seemed the obvious choice, little did I know what was in store. After an easy drive to Yangi Bay the fun started. Lots of sand, plenty of mud holes and a lot of swearing before getting to Point Sir Isaac. I suggest if it is your first time perhaps team up with someone as there are plenty of 4WD enthusiasts along the way. Please be aware of the tide times if doing this trip. Great fun with plenty of Adrenalin. The cost of the Park was $11.00 which can be done online. See more..

  14. 4.5 Nullarbor National Park (35 reviews)
    - There's more to see than you think
National Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Nullarbor National Park image
If you’re travelling along the Eyre highway, then technically you don’t transit through most of the park. It only borders the coastal area from 100 kilometres after Yalata and ends a little before Eucla - heading West. From May to October is your best chance to see dozens of Southern right whales and sometimes Humpbacks. (At the head of Bight and also not within the park). From memory, the turnoff is about 30km prior to the Nullarbor roadhouse. It’s quite possible to spot camels herds along the way too, so be wary on the road. With the actual Park being so huge, you can spend as little as as much time as you like here. See more..

  17. 4.0 Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park (31 reviews)
    - Naturally interesting
    Bodies of Water • Parks
    Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park image
There's no doubt that if you're a diver and have the permit this would be outstanding. For us non divers it is an interesting site but not one that consumes much time to take in. However as you enter the road to the actual ponds there is a further non indicated attraction that is a part of the ponds. Here from another car park there is a short track over a sand dune that leads to the beach where the water exits as a spring and flows into the ocean, this is well worth a bit of time exploring. Further from the car park there is a walk that goes through the low bush and in part to a board walk that ends up on the other side of the ponds, and feeds the outlet to the ocean. Really worth a look! See more..

  20. 4.5 Dutchman's Stern Conservation Park (16 reviews)
    - Great view from the summit
Spent More than 3 hours Parks
    Dutchman's Stern Conservation Park image
To be honest we expected a much easier walk than what we encountered. The information board listed this as being "gentle" which could not have been farther from the truth. In actuality its over 10 K on a rock strewn path that continues up to and back from the summit. Three of us made the trip and were all very pleased that no one turned an ankle. That said however it was a beautiful hike with kangaroos everywhere in the lower portion of the walk. Views from the summit are spectacular and as long as you are ready for a somewhat arduous experience you will be rewarded with great scenery. The only problem we had was that it was promoted as being Gentle. Had we known that is was somewhat difficult we would have better prepared for it. And by the way..... there are no toilets anywhere on or near this hike so definitely plan ahead. See more..
  21. 4.5 Murray River National Park (14 reviews)
    - Lyrup Flats National Park
Spent More than 3 hours National Parks
    Murray River National Park image
Come and explore the three separate areas that make up Murray River National Park. Katarapko, Lyrup Flats and Bulyong Island cover more than 13,000 hectares and conserve the verdant Murray wetlands that flow through the park. The Katarapko area features floodplains and several wetlands. The area is an important breeding area for native wildlife, including waterbirds, and is an ideal place for birdwatching. Lyrup Flats encompasses 2,000 hectares along the floodplain on the northern side of the river and provides wonderful opportunities for birdwatching and fishing. You can take your dog for a walk in the Lyrup Flats area of the park providing it is on a lead. Bulyong Island is only accessible by boat. The island is home to a number of wildlife species, such as the western grey kangaroos, emus, pelicans, kingfishers and parrots. See more..

    Whyalla Conservation Park image
we saw this on our to Whyalla but we passed it and was going to do it on our way back and we did . The road into the park is ROUGH as but probably all good for a 4 wheel drive its a fare drive and you just don't know what your. expecting till you get there and it was amazing . I think nature would have been amazing to see but think it was way too windy for any one to be hanging around . the rock formations was just incredible to see and the view what you could see anyway was Awesome. just found the driving a wee bit scary one way in one way out needless to say you would find it difficult if anyone was coming the opposite direction ( not a lot of room to pull over ) . Gawler Ranges National Park image
We spent the whole day driving, hiking, climbing at the Gawler Ranges. Easy enough to navigate your way around. The roads are unpaved but not bad. We weren’t able to go to the Organ pipes as a 4WD was required to take the road there. Saw lots of Emu’s and Kangaroos. Our first stop was Mt Allalone which was better than expected. We climbed the short mountain, took only 20 minutes to reach the top. See more..

    Memorial Park image
This is a lovely fenced park with a rotunda, BBQ area, play area, picnic tables and very clean toilet facilities. It's a really great place to have a break from a long drive. The park was designed by Charles Reade, South Australia's first Government Town planner. He was invited to a special meeting of the Jamestown Corporation on November 25th, 1918. He was visiting Jamestown in connection with improvements to the town... according to the minutes from that meeting. Following World War One, communities were encouraged to erect memorials to the men who had served and died. As a result in 1919 three acres were dedicated to the parklands. Public subscription funded the park and it was opened in 1922. These days it's a great place to go to remember those who fought for our small communities and pause and reflect on the price of our freedom. See more..

The road in is very corrugated but the end result is just amazing. These mound springs are quite visible from a distance rising above the flat desert and being usually covered with green foliage. We first drove out to the furthest on named the Bubbler. There is a short boardwalk up to the top were there is a pool with beautiful clear water bubbling up. What a magic oasis in such a terribly harsh land. This water then flows down into a wetland where there are lots of birds. The other one which is set up to visit is called Blanche Cup.
