At the entry to the Jetty, artist Karen of Squashed Cocky is completing the final stages of giant cuttlefish mosaic tiles seating - today she was doing the final grouting. 9. 4.0 Arkaroo Rock (83 reviews)
    - Recovery walk
    Historic Sites
    Arkaroo Rock image
We did this as a recovery walk after the Rawnsley Bluff the day before. It's a nice shady (in the morning) walk, a bit of cardio on the way up, with great views. They have placed some benches throughout the whole length of the walk, for photo opps (and a rest if you need it!). Signage could be better, though the path is reasonably easy to find most if the time, despite the flood damage that is evident. The rocks are very impressive! And no kidding, a group of about 30 goats, one with a fantastic set of horns! See more..

    - A Surprise in the Outback

    Farina image
The underground bakery had been recommended by other travellers. We would of had no idea as it is off the main road. Wow, wow, the bakery is only open a couple of months and run by volunteers. The nest food. The fruit loaf was absolutely amazing as well as the bread and sweets. Also bought some napkin holders all made locally. Then we spent quite a while walking around this ongoing restoration of Farina. Those volunteers are totally committed. Take the time to visit you won’t be disappointed. See more..

    - Well worth the visit
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Historic Sites
    Historic Gladstone Gaol image
Excellent value for money. I think possibly some of the sections were not opened up, but this is partly my fault for not asking. Staff were informative and friendly. Public toilets were very clean and tidy. We did find some of the art/decorations a little odd for a historic site. Definitely worth stopping in for a visit if you are in the vicinity. See more..

    Captain Harry Butler Memorial image
It’s worth the drive to Minlaton just to see the display and learn about Australia’s unsung aviation pioneers. The glass enclosed display highlights the only Bristol in Australia and likely the world restored to its former glory. The information panels are very legible and impart the perfect amount of information without drowning you in facts It is a credit to those behind developing and maintaining the display See more..
  18. 3.5 Yourambulla Caves Historic Reserve (17 reviews)

    Yourambulla Caves Historic Reserve image
We met with the owner of the property, and because of lack of government support, he has had to close access to the property because of public liability. It is a real shame as it it a real treasure. Land owners I this area need more government support to keep these sites available for public access. I feel for the owner, and it is a shame for the public! See more..

    - Overlooking the first Murray Bridge
Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    The Round House image
Very interesting cavalcade of early settlement in Murray Bridge. Initially the residence of the engineer responsible for the first bridge over the Murray. It has been a school house, post office and council offices during its long history. Full of interesting artefacts which for the most part are hands-on and able to be touched and closely examined. Very interesting architectural structure as well, reflecting the initial resident’s quirky style. See more..

    The Chinese Monument image
From 1856 to 1863, 16,500 Chinese from China, walked 320kms from Robe to Ballarat and Bendigo! They landed in South Australia to avoid the 10£ landing fee imposed by the Victorian Govt to deter Chinese going to the goldfields. This red gate translates to encourage the courage, strength and perseverance for the Chinese. A stone memorial was erected in their memory. The Robe’s custom house was built to cater for the Chinese and overlooks the blue sea. See more..

  23. 5.0 Sharam Cottage (11 reviews)
    - Amazing view into a bygone era
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites
    Sharam Cottage image
It was fantastic to be able to explore this historical site and imagine how its occupants lived out their lives. The gardens are glorious and there is plenty of information boards to tell the family's story. I wandered around the cottage and saw the layers of wallpaper and lino. Also two houses make up Sharam Cottage. This is an up close and personal experience of a bygone era without the standard over-curation and glassed exhibits found in larger towns and cities. What a treasure! And thanks to the volunteers who maintain the gardens. See more..
  24. 5.0 Anlaby Station (9 reviews)
    - Unique opportunity, highly recommend
Spent More than 3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Anlaby Station image
Anlaby is well positioned within the Kapunda, Barossa Valley and Clare Tourism Regions to make it your base to tour these exciting areas. Tours of the Anlaby House and Garden are available for groups of 10 or more [by prior appointment]. These tours include the principal rooms of the house including the servants work rooms, kitchen, scullery and butler’s pantry. At the end of the house tour you will have a strong sense of how the family and servants lived and worked there. With approximately 10 acres of garden a guided walk through these historically listed gardens typically includes the shade house, glass house, walled vegetable garden, rose gardens and terraced lawns. The original carriageway winds past the front of the house and down to the peacock aviary. The garden is indeed a restoration work in progress and not all in pristine condition. The garden is of the old fashioned “English style” yet located in a dry South Australian climate and this creates challenges. See more..

Our stay in this historic, but beautifully renovated, building was most enjoyable. Jane and Brett were wonderful hosts with vast local knowledge. Every amenity was first class. The breakfast provisions were more than adequate and the homemade biscuits and cake that Jane had made were delicious. The property is well situated in town - right on the foreshore. The views of the sea and sunsets are uninterrupted. Definitely recommended. See more..
  27. 4.5 Redruth Gaol (7 reviews)
    - First prison built outside Adelaide
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Redruth Gaol image
It was fascinating to wander around and through the Redruth Gaol and learn about the varied roles of the building. Originally built in 1856 as a gaol to cater for the growing need for such an institution in the Burra district, it was the first gaol to be built outside of Adelaide at the time. The gaol closed in 1894, by 1897 it had been repurposed and renovated to house a Girls' Reformatory in 1897 till 1922. Between 1894-97 and after 1922 it was a private residence, film set for a famous Australian movie (Breaker Morant) and a social venue. Throughout the building there was plenty of interesting information boards about life in the gaol and Girl's Reformatory. Access to the site is only possible if you have purchased a Burra Heritage Passport which comes with a key, ask at the Tourist Information Office in the centre of town. See more..
  28. 4.0 Terowie Railway Station (6 reviews)
    - You Should Visit
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Terowie Railway Station image
A lot of history in this place. The railway has a memorial to the arrival of General MacArthur when he and his wife and son visited. This is where he uttered those infamous words in his speech...I Shall Return. We took a stroll down the main street. It is like stepping back into a bygone era. Well I suppose it is really. So many old buildings that was wonderful to look at. Well worth the stop to view this. If you are self contained you can also stay the night in the railway yards. See more..

    - Worth the visit

    Sir Hubert Wilkins Homestead image
Not in the town. In fact many km from the main road along dirt tracks that are reasonably well signposted. It would be best for visitors to read up on Wilkins before visiting his restored birth place. That would make the visit more memorable. Wilkins was an extraordinary individual and it was a privilege to be able to visit his birth place. The visit to the homestead must be taken slowly but enables to traveler to appreciate the harshness of the country side. See more..

Found the Bundler Channel when riding the Mawson Trail, and then did it again on the Heysen Trail. An amazing piece of architecture from over 100 years ago when gravity was the only way of moving water. The channel is no longer in working order, albeit it does work as a collector for heavy rains off the nearby hills. And after doing this several times, I am still confused by the optical illusion as to which way the water would flow ? See more..
