Strathalbyn is a wonderful country town which makes a good stop-over between Adelaide and Goolwa, or equally, a day-destination from Adelaide. The town is really in two parts. The higher level, with the aptly named High Street, is famous for its many antique shops, which are quite exceptional. Then there is the lower level, next to the pretty Soldiers' Memorial Park with its beautiful river setting. There are several bakeries, a number of historic old buildings including an old flour mill and a well-preserved bank, and a fine Visitors' Centre and art gallery in the old railway station. The bank has a plaque commemorating the deposit of the first million pounds! A little out of town one finds the Catholic and Anglican churches. And between the two town levels stands the impressive St Andrew's Uniting Church. Unfortunately, we have never found this open ... . The Victoria Hotel provides a good meal in an interesting setting. We came across this winery/restaurant by chance they were very busy but we did a wine tasting while we waited for a table and that was the best decision of our trip to Clare. This little restaurant is a hidden diamond the service is fantastic and the food is devine so good that when looking at somewhere for the following days lunch we could absolutely not go past a revisit to try more of their mouth watering dishes. A must is the barramundi sashimi and the wagyu beef but honestly we found all the dishes we tried absolutely devine. This is a beautiful little store filled with so much local produce. Keryn was very knowledgeable, not only about the produce, but also the district. It is always great to find locally grown food such as dried fruits, nuts and oils. If I lived in South Australia, I would take a day trip a month to stock up on so many products. Unfortunately, I didn't have an esky today or I would have bought so much more. Chocolate coated cashews!!! If you are in the Coonawarra area, this is a must. As it is 15 minutes out of Coonawarra, dirt road some of the way, I imagine some don’t make that effort with so much choice on the Coonawarra strip. We are so glad we went and highly recommend others take this detour. The garden, on arrival, is magnificent. The owner talked us through our tasting and he was so informative and helpful with our questions. After visiting four wineries over our two day stay and enjoying the wines, this was a stand out above the others. We loved the Carillion (Shiraz and Cab Sav etc) and it won medals at both the Vienna and San Francisco wine shows. We bought a variety of reds, a fortified and the gin. The winery is also a distillery and the spirits on offer were very appealing and some quite unusual. This family run vineyard was a highlight of our Coonawarra experience.See more..

We popped in here because I love cider. Had a great chat with Tim about how he came to be there as we tried the scrumpy. Don't expect the yucky sugary cider stuff you buy in most pubs. This is the real thing with a good shot of 'cider vinegar' on the palate. We tried 2 ciders and the fortified cider. 6 of the Farmhouse Cider and a bottle of Sweet Panic (fortified) came home with us. We actually drink the cider with ice and a good dash of water - that might be sacrilege but it's 10% alcohol and it knocks your socks off! I hope this business does well. Tim is a great host and has a great product and it's great to see a unique business in a regional area. They are planning a B&B and we'd stay there. I've been hiking around Burra before but only ever camped out. Enjoyed the day in Burra and plan to come back for a week.See more..

We usually purchase Almondco almonds from markets, but since we were in the Riverland bought at the factory shop. We spent a considerable amount of money on various large containers of almonds as well as almond bread made in the Country Bakehouse at Loxton. However, we were disappointed to find the three French Nougat bars were made in Griffith, NSW. It would be great if they could convince someone in the Riverland to produce them, using Almondco's fresh almonds from the Riverland and not from other States as noticed on the labels of two containers. I concur with the other reviewer regarding customer service. Once woman seated at the computer was helpful but the other two were quite surly. Customer service in the current economic downturn, as well as fruit fly in the Riverland Zone, should be paramount if businesses want return customers.See more..

It is embedded in the stringybark forest and is simply thrumming with small birds, flowers and much more. We saw an echidna, a kookaburra, blue wrens, scrub wrens, grey fantails, golden whistler and an elusive bassian thrush all at this incredible place. There are picnic tables at the car park, which is also embedded in the forest and they welcome visitors to bring a picnic and simply hang out and enjoy the beauty of the scenery.
