  1. 4.5 Serbian Orthodox Church (428 reviews)
    - The sounds of silence

    Serbian Orthodox Church image
The Serbian Orthodox Church in Coober Pedy is a must. See if you can get there when no one else is present. I was stunned by the palpable silence. The simplicity of the church emphasises the incredible amount of work done to create this beautiful space in a very short time. The magic of the place is destroyed as soon as people enter and start chattering. I recommend walking in and standing in silence for a few minutes to feel just what a special place this is. Loved it. Not far from the center of Coober Pedy is one of unique underground churches of this amazing town - St Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Quite incredible, a bit understated and so Coober Pedian! I was quite impressed by the slate roof and sheer size of construction for a small town ! The crypt was a unexpected surprise too. Kids were happy to play ball and tennis in the lawns while we did some wine tasting at the nearby Cellars . So for a family destination, it was win win for everyone ! See more..

Over 160 years old and still going strong. The church is open every day from 10am to 5 pm for prayer and meditation and there is a message book and board where prayers and thank you notes can be posted. The church is also a shrine to Our Lady of Yankalilla who made an appearance to some parishioners about 30 years ago. Well worth a visit from the historical viewpoint. See more..

St Mary's Anglican Church of Australia image
This is a beautiful little Anglican Church quite close to the centre of the township. The church is open to the public for set times most days. The stained glass windows are particularly colourful and impressive, and the church has a peaceful and worshipful atmosphere. Burra has an interesting mining history, but for me, St Mary's is the best reason for visiting! See more..

This simple dugout Greek Orthodox church was built in the early 1970s by Greek miners. It is intact and serviced by priests from Adelaide. The congregation also care for the adjacent early cemetery. The later cemetery is on the other side of the road and worth a look as well. See more..

  14. 5.0 All Saints Catholic Church (2 reviews)
    - One of Port Augusta’s Surprises

    All Saints Catholic Church image
One’s rating for this church will depend on how much you like churches, but this is a spectacular and interesting church. Built in 1971, it replaced the old Gothic Church which was rendered unsafe by the building of the new highway. It sits within a walled ‘close’, and it is worth exploring this area. Inside, the front roof line rises steeply and we are faced with a large crucifix. A Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament is to one side. I enjoyed this church enough to revisit it and photograph it in detail. It is one of Port Augusta’s surprises. See more..

    Saint Canute's Catholic Church image
When leaving Streaky Bay, I was delighted to find the front door of this church open, so went inside. The church has an interesting exterior: it was built in 1912, and there are architectural similarities to the local Anglican Church which was built in the same year. I found the interior warm and welcoming, with lovely stained glass windows behind the altar. St Canute was a Danish saint, and there is an icon of him in the South transept which was apparently given to the church by the Danish Archbishop at the time of the church’s centenary. See more..

Anglican Church of Mount Gambier image
I was attracted by this church, thanks to a monument on the other side of the road. Their garden was extensive, It had a lot of beautiful roses. It had a path and it had a gate where the parishioners could enter. They had a shelter and a wooden bench. It had one large tower. The red bricks stood out. The church was huge. It had also a tower like the towers in castles. Beautiful! Worthwhile to see! See more..

  18. 5.0 Church of the Good Shepherd (1 review)
    - Good Church
    Churches & Cathedrals
Church of the Good Shepherd image
This church is on Chapel Street, 0.5 km east of the town. It is striking on the outside with an unusually shaped tower, and inside it also has a number of special features, including large stained glass windows in the pointed Gothic style. A problem for the casual visitor is that the church seems to be locked most of the time, so it is a matter of attending a service or making a special arrangement. For those interested in viewing our old historic churches, either of these is worthwhile. See more..

    St Michael’s Catholic Church image
I have been to Clare many times, and never thought of looking for the Catholic Church. To be fair, it is somewhat hidden from view, behind the St Joseph’s School in Victoria Street. And in fact, to visit you need to go in off Gleeson Street to the north. From outside the church is impressive with a tall tower. We found the front door open, and went inside. The interior is very impressive with lovely windows, and three chapels across the front. The windows are particularly interesting: modern and symbolic: quite thought provoking! I am surprised that we are continually finding new delights in our country towns! See more..

St Mary Of The Angels Church image
I was surprised to find this large modern church in ‘little’ Port Lincoln! It sits on a large block of land shared with St Joseph’s School, a short distance inland from the town centre. I found it quite hard to find the way in, but there are entries from Mortlock Terrace and little Kelly Street. There is plenty of parking. There is a welcoming sign on the road in from Mortlock Terrace, and a nearby Church cemetery. I found the main door of the Church unlocked, but requiring effort to open! You enter a large narthex with two brightly coloured windows, and then this opens up into a spacious auditorium. The impression is of great space and simplicity with altar area in front, and two angled walls of colourful stained glass. Simple stations of the cross line the angled back walls. To one side is a Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The main space is lit by large square overhead lamps - impressive, but perhaps too prominent? For any visitor to Port Lincoln with a love for churches, this is a must. See more..
