  5. 4.5 Strangways Springs (6 reviews)
    - Worth the Diversion
Spent 1-2 hours Ancient Ruins • Historic Walking Areas
    Strangways Springs image
Not far off the Oodnadatta Track the Strangways Springs Walks are definitely worth a visit. We obtained a leaflet describing the three different walks and decided to go and look at the settlement first of all. It gives you an insight to the very harsh conditions these pioneers endured. We had only just looked at the old telegraph station and other nearby ruins when we could see a huge dust storm rolling in over the plain towards us. We started high tailing it back to the car park. It was such a shame as we had intended to have a good look around and do the Mound Springs walk as well as the Woolwash walk. Oh well, looks like nature still has full control out here in these parts. See more..

  11. 4.0 Sedan Heritage Trail (3 reviews)
    - Insightful walk through a sleepy old town
Spent 2-3 hours Historic Walking Areas
    Sedan Heritage Trail image
Don't normally drive past, and perhaps that may have been part of the town's problems. People changed routes and drove past, and the town dwindled. I broke up my drive to do a tour of the heritage trail, and to learn a bit about why this place was so critical to travellers. Some of the buildings are still in good care, while others have been left a bit flat. The walk is easy, and pets are welcome. The facilities are available, but there was limited shops open early in the morning. The pub opened as I finished the walk. Enjoyable though See more..

  15. 4.0 Morgan Heritage Walk (2 reviews)
    - Rich river history
    Historic Walking Areas
    Morgan Heritage Walk image
I still recall looking into the morgue on my first visit and jumping back... god knows what I was expecting! However, it made my uncle laugh and laugh! Our first visit was in July of 2018 and even though I knew what to expect this year... I still approached cautiously in April of this year, 2019. I guess there's that instinctive memory of the jump from last year. I love that this is there though... to remind us of what once was. But this is simply one of the things to see on the walk... there are 47 points of interest if you pick up the map, or search for it online. The walk will take you to see the Murray River, the Wharf, the Morton Bay Fig Tree, the post office, the railway refreshment room and many other places. Morgan is one of those special towns that makes you want to visit and stay and explore. See more..

    Saddleworth Historical Walk image
Took the walk around Saddleworth and would never have guessed that it was a town divided by two halves, in a similar way to Eudunda. The walking trail highlights a number of significant buildings and sites on the southern side of town, before heading around past the cemetery, the old railway line and across to the northern side. An insight in to a town that I knew very little about. See more..
  18. 5.0 Karoonda Historic Walks (1 review)
    - An History Lesson through Art and Tributes to the Past
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Walking Areas
    Karoonda Historic Walks image
Karoonda has three Town Walks – Railway Terrace Walk, Karoonda Town Walk and the Pioneer Park & Nature Trail Walk. Whilst in Karoonda for a short stop, I did part of the Karoonda Railway Terrace Walk. The Walk started in the area opposite the café which included a playground dedicated to the memory of a fallen policeman stationed in the area, a BBQ area and a large shed which included WIFI. Next was the Big Ram a tribute to the Merino sheep industry of the area. Continuing walking and the railway station is seen. The large red railway crane dominates the area and used to load heavy items of cargo onto trains for transport to other destinations. Continuing on the linking pathway, with some seating along the way, a large stone installation featuring a windmill as a depiction of the Spirit of the Mallee. The words “No Wind No Water No Life” sums up the dependence on the area on basic necessities in what can be a drought effected area. The paved area in front bears the names of contributors to the piece and the Centenary Walk. "Where Is He', a metal sculpture of a woman holding her child in her arms on the front porch, waiting for her husband top return from the fields speaks of the droughts and their effect on families in the area. Looking back along path, the latest piece the silo art if seen. The last piece in the walk if the Shuffles paying tribute to the Mallee wheat industry. The walk does continue on the other side of the street to return back to the start. I did not have time to compete this walk anticipating that I will return to complete this walk and undertake another as well. Return? Yes as there is still much more to see in the Murray Mallee town of Karoonda. See more..

  20. 5.0 Coola Outstation Historical Hike (1 review)
    - Great walk
    Historic Walking Areas
    Coola Outstation Historical Hike image
Coola Outstation Historical Hike is some 20km south west of Millicent. The car park can be reached carefully in a 2 wd vehicle although some extra clearance would come in handy. The boundary walk follows a 4 wd track which is 7.58km. However, the entire circuit cannot be driven owning to gates and narrow stretches. There is an alternative short walk from the car park marked as 2.2km which I measured as 1.88km. This walk goes directly to the ruins and back. There is also a 7.3km there and back walk (if think) to Sandy Bar on the shore of Lake Bonney. There were a few Emus and Kangaroo's. There are no facilities at all at this location so come prepared. Mobile phone reception is patchy. See more..

From the vines to the lakes to the countryside, a great little tour to see all of the region. Well signposted throughout, this self-guided tour takes you along the main roads through all the towns, and could probably be done on a bike if you were energetic enough. Fascinating area of SA See more..
