We fell across the Australian Farmer statue by accident, as we saw the signs at Wudinna and decided to check it out. We had a picnic in the park and noticed the signs to the sculptures, otherwise we wouldn't have known they were there. I wonder how many tourists just stop for a photo of the galah and just travel onward. Its a quick drive to the Whites Knob Lookout where the sculptures stand at the top. They are very well made and worth seeing. They were made as a tribute to Edward John Eyre and the indigenous people of the region. They stand overlooking the town of Kimba and are really worth a visit. See more..

  36. 2.0 Oil Rig Monument (1 review)
    - Salt Creek's Famous Replica Oil Rig - 2 Minutes of Fun for All!!
    Monuments & Statues
    Oil Rig Monument image
Back in the 1890's a group of "entrpreneurs" mistook a compacted vegetable substance (since known as 'coorongite') as evidence that there was oil to be found beneath the coorong. This started an exploration project to hunt for the magical black gold, they were not successful. To celebrate the lack of success, a Replica Oil Rig has been constructed to honour the failure so that future generations can also join in the disappointment!. This is one of those great Australian roadside attractions that you have to stop at when you are passing in the car. Take your camera and get a great photo of you and your fellow travellers looking excited in front of this very underwhelming monument. This is a short visit which should take no more than 5 minutes to read the sign documenting the history of oil in Australia. There is a picnic table nearby if you would like to make it a longer stay. Climbing on the rig is not permitted. See more..

  38. 4.0 Curio (1 review)
    - Famed Rodeo Horse Honoured at Marrabel SA
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Curio image
Marrabel is a very small country town north of Adelaide. It is primarily noted for the annual rodeo held in the town. The first Rodeo was held in 1935 to raise funds for a local tennis court. Since then the rodeo has continued to raise funds for local projects. A brumby bought in a mob in 1945 was named Curio and became the most famous buckjumper in Australia. Curio was unbeaten for eight years with the first successful ride in 1953 by Alan Woods. Until then no one had stayed seated more than three seconds but Alan successfully rode her for ten seconds. To honour Curio, a two tonne cold cast bronze statue was created and is situated in the main street of Marrabel. Created by sculptor Ben Van Zetter, after being commissioned in 1991, the sculpture is based on a photo taken during the famous ride. It was pure accident that we came across Curio as we had selected an alternate route from Clare back to Adelaide. The sculpture is majestic and dominates the location. The details in the work is amazing showing the raw determination of both horse and rider to become the “victor”. It was also fascinating to read of Curio’s history at the site including national acknowledgement of her ability. If passing by do stop and taken in another moment of Australian history and culture. Return? Probably would stop if passing that way again especially if the day was not overcast. See more..
  39. 5.0 The Gift Horse (1 review)
    - Arthurton's “Gift Horse” – A magnificent Sculpture
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    The Gift Horse image
Travelling South Australia's Yorke Peninsula and driving through the small community of Arthurton on the way back to Adelaide. Generally when travelling through towns we tend to slow down a tad just to see what is actually there. Happened to glance to the right as passing caught sight of a sculpture of a man on a horse that looked interesting. Car turned around, parked and out to, in Aussie slang, a gander! At first sight looked like Don Quixote's "Man of La Mancha". The sculpture was welded parts of rusted machinery that could be found on many a farm around Arthurton. Overall the sculpture is worthy of note, but gained more interest as I got closer and started to identify what parts had been used to create that section. The whip is like being caught in a time warp never to complete the "crack". Of interest was the use of car hub-caps to form a shield guarding the stockman. The hubs also reflects sunlight to draw attention that the sculpture is there. The golden-red rusty colour adds to the feeling that this is Aussie at it's best. This colour also contrasts well with the lush green lawned area on which the sculpture sits. Gifted to Arthurton by the local engineering business founded in Arthurton in the 1960s W.C.G. Zwar and Sons in 2018, the work was made by Max Zwar in the early-90s. Do yourself a favour, take a few minutes break from driving, get out of the car and view The Gift Horse Return? Would love to see this sculpture at sunset so maybe one day - just added it to the Bucket List! See more..

Great way to draw visitors to a country town. There’s not much else here, but the monster and the pink lake were so great to look at. We were lucky that the lake was pink on our visit. Apparently it’s pink when there’s water, during the dry season (summer) the lake dries up and leaves salt formations which could be cool to see too. See more..
  41. 3.0 Hallett War Memorial (1 review)
    - Granite obelisk
    Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues
    Hallett War Memorial image
We stopped at Hallett to get fuel and after looking through the store there, I wandered outside to see what was around. Across the road from the fuel station/store... there is a war memorial. This town's population is just over 200. A war memorial in a town this size shows the impacts our wars have had throughout Australia even in smaller communities. "On Wednesday last His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Lady and Miss Priscilla Weigall, and attended by Captain Houston Boswell and Dr Williams, paid his first official visit to Hallett for the purpose of' unveiling the Soldiers' Memorial erected in memory of the boys of the district who fell and fought in the recent great war. The memorial is a fine piece of work standing about 16ft high, is of grey granite composed of three large blocks on which is a pedestal, with a column about 5ft in height ; the cost of the memorial was about £600. On each side of the pedestal are very fine large cast bronze plate and on the front plate is the following inscription, 'Erected by the residents in the district in memory of our boys who fought in the Great War, 1914-1918,' and beneath is depicted a picture of infantry in action. On the back a beautiful design is worked in the metal of a dove holding in its beak a scroll on which is written the names of the men who fell." Burra Record (SA), 14 September 1921. - Impressive Country Town War Memorial

    Truro War Memorial image
Travelling around Australia, one point of interest that usually can be found in even the smallest of towns is a local war memorial. Created in 2015, the ANZAC centennial year, a striking memorial was established in Truro. Across the road from the older traditional War Memorial, the new memorial is sculptured from Austral Juperana rock and has been surrounded with plantings of Red Cross Roses and Gallipoli Rosemary. The design is simple and powerful in a natural setting. Being set mid-town adjacent to the main road through Truro, it is indicative that Truro indeed will not forget their own who have paid the ultimate price in war. Well worth taking time to stop and reflect with the locals and admire the beauty of this memorial. See more..

    - Paying Tribute to Post World War 2 Defence Personnel

Riverland Vietnam War Veterans & Post World War Two Memorial image
Located on Riverview Drive, Berri opposite the Visitors Information Centre, Riverland Vietnam War Veterans & Post World War Two Memorial is a simple yet powerful memorial to those from the Riverland who served their country post World War II. Opened in October 2009, it is in a strategic location to remind all of the gratitude that is owed to these personnel. The Memorial is open and circular in shaped defined at the back by two very large etched glass screens depicting personnel at war. The etchings cover all branches of the Australian Defence Forces. On the bricked courtyard are the names of those who fought in these wars. On the 4 plinths nearest River View Drive are plaques listing all the conflicts in which these service personnel fought. The memorial, although situated at a very busy intersection, still demands reflection and acknowledgement. It is worthwhile to visit as often these post World War 2 conflicts tend to be underplayed and in the shadow of the 2 Great Wars. Return? When next in Berri, I again shall visit the memorial.
