Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum image
Naval Air Station Wildwood Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to restore Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, Cape May County, New Jersey, into an aircraft museum honoring the Navy airmen who died while training during World War II. Hangar # 1 was listed onto the National Register of Historic Places in September of 1997. Naval Air station (NAS) Wildwood was commissioned on April 1, 1943. The site served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility from 1943 to 1945. Aircraft stationed at NAS Wildwood included TBM Avengers, Douglas Dauntlesses, Vought Corsairs and Curtiss Helldivers. Forty-two airmen perished while training at NAS Wildwood during World War II. In June 1997, NASW Foundation purchased Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. The 92,000 square-foot all-wooden structure was in a state of disrepair and required extensive renovation. Under the stewardship of NASW Foundation, the hangar was listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places at the National Significance Level. NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum now boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs and more. Additionally, the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia has provided NAS Wildwood with a wealth of interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight. The museum also features a library, food vending area as well as a recently expanded gift shop. In its role as a community resource, NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum regularly hosts activities including fly-ins, aviation festivals, big band concerts, swing dances, veterans’ ceremonies, historical lectures, school field trips and senior tours. We did the mine and museum tour, which was a very interesting and unique experience. The fluorescent rock displays were very cool - something the kids will like too. Tour guides were very informative. The museum had a lot of great stuff in it too. One warning: both my kids' sneakers got soaked and muddy from the puddles in the mine, so I recommend boots! 4. 3.5 Space Farms Zoo & Museum (228 reviews)
    - I feel bad for the animals
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums • Zoos
Space Farms Zoo & Museum image
We took our daughter here since there’s not much to do but it was a bit depressing for me and my boyfriend. The animals cages were so small. Even the baboons were in a very small cage with no branches to sit on just straight wood poles and balls. The big cats cages are way to small for them and the lion looked a bit skinny. The alligator is kept in the water but in a very small cage that is just touching the water. I enjoyed this place as a kid but I won’t be back and I hope these poor animals can be put into a rescue center and they don’t take in any new animals because this is not the way animals should be living. Where’s carol baskin when you need her, even though what she did wasn’t any better. See more..

  6. 4.0 Morris Museum (147 reviews)
    - Some Highs Some Lows
Thursday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Morris Museum image
I leave this review with the thought that I will go back and try again on a day when they are not catering to kids for a magic and chocolate themed day. That being said they are a NARM museum so we didn’t have to pay the $10 per person admission since we are members of the Penn Museum. I wish they had a cafeteria or some option of snacks other than junk food in the gift shop. The biggest highlight was the art gallery and the automaton music boxes and the way they told the history. Although the art gallery changes the music display is a Permanent exhibit. I don’t know if it is a permanent exhibit but they also had a really interesting art exhibit intertwining a story and mechanical interpretations of the story. I excitedly went into the gift shop wanting to buy the book to share with my students. I was really disappointed to see that the book is $80.00 and a plastic bound set of pictures of the book is $30.00. I’m a teacher that is way to expensive but i am really disappointed to not be able to share it with my students. The bottom line, my husband and I love to get out to these places and it is a real source of enjoyment and relaxing. Today was not. The kids in this place were out of control and rude. It was really over crowded and the exhibits did not flow well. See more..
  7. 4.5 The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms (103 reviews)

The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms image
We stopped by on our way to NYC & had a wonderful tour with Pete who was incredibly knowledgeable about Gustav Stickley, his businesses & the design of the time. Every question (& we had many!) was answered with enthusiasm. The house and grounds are lovely with many unique pieces to see. You can even take pictures! Small children will probably not appreciate it, but anyone interested in design, Arts & Crafts Movement or furniture should go. And definitely take the guided tour! (And ask for Pete!) See more..

Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Speciality Museums
    Morven Museum and Garden image
The people who lived at Morven over the years have so many interesting stories, from the original owners to the governors. Walking through the museum is a walk through time. Whether you are from the area or not, I recommend a visit. Be prepared to read if you want to fully understand the individuals associated with Morven. The museum is mostly handicap accessible, though some areas are not manageable for wheelchairs. There is an elevator. Parking is on the premises. The gardens are lovely and worth a walk through. The price of admission is fair. We spent two hours there. See more..

Larry Doby exhibit but the exhibit does not show all the facts. Larry played baseball while in high school for a team sponsored by my father- Uncle Sam’s. He actually played on a team with Lou Costello. The games were played at Hinchcliff Stadium where Larry was seen playing and was signed by the Newark Eagles. Being young Larry played as Larry Walker. Lou would announce the games and started “Who’s On First “ at the stadium. See more..
  10. 4.5 Franklin Mineral Museum (68 reviews)
    - Worthwhile, though doesn’t compare to sterling hill
    Speciality Museums
    Franklin Mineral Museum image
If you go to the sterling hill mining museum, this museum won’t have a ton to add, but it’s very cheap and old school and has a lot of cool minerals. They also have their own fluorescent minerals room. To see the museum at sterling hill, you have to take the two hour mine tour, so this spot is an option if you want to see some glowing rocks in less time. They have a replica mine you can see, but it’s nowhere near as impressive the actual sterling hill mine. They have exhibits on local rocks, indigenous artifacts, and fossils. You can pay an additional fee if you’d like to search for rocks out back in their rock field. Worth at least a short stop whether you are sterling hill or not, depending on your agenda and how much time you have. See more..

Though we live near by, we didn't visit the Yogi Berra museum until friends wanted to go. So glad we did! You don't have to be a Yankees fan to appreciate the life and career of this famous Yankees catcher. After all, he owned 10 World Series rings and 3 MVPs. You get to see them, along with other memorabilia from baseball. Not just Yankees. Did you know that his nickname was because he resembled a yogi, not from Yogi Bear. There is a really great exhibit on the Negro Baseball League. And women players during WWII. Kids will love the pitchers mound to test your skills! Suggest you start with the 22 minute film in the charming auditorium. Oh! The Babe Ruth baseball. See more..

I love this delightful little museum. They always mount a really interesting exhibition even with their limited space. The new exhibition is "Object Lessons" on objects that were in people's homes and life styles that were lived in early Ridgewood. There were artifacts from the Lenape Indians, early Dutch settlers and objects from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Each of them take the perspective from the home and experiences. In the back of the museum is an extensive toy display with old board games, dolls, kitchen items including a plug in over from the 1930's and all sorts of items on wheels to amuse a fussy child. Seeing 'mother nature' as another medium when in the hands of a master 'craftsman'! Ricky's mind sees something in nature that goes beyond ANY landscape- architectured sculpture parks we have seen! Ricky is the product of some very serious 'old-country' family genes, both artistic and as a craftsman! Spending time with him left us thinking how his 'mind's-eye' sees his Luna Parc. It's a living expression of who he is and it's his muse! I have experienced thirty five art environments. I have spent time with some artists who call these wonderful environments home. Ricky is the only current active environmentalist still creating on such a scale! "Keep On Truckin' " Ricky! See more..

So many great pieces of golf history from the different eras of the game. The staff does a great job of mapping everything out for visitors. There is a small admissions fee (the day we went there was no charge) but it's worth the price if you're a fan of the game. A small museum packed full of interesting memorabilia. An amazing number of pictures and information about Paramus and Bergen County over the past 100 or so years. Also, lots of household items and miscellaneous "stuff" that will bring back memories to anyone over the age of 70. Or teach anyone younger than that what life was like in another era . My husband and I were lucky enough to wander in on a Sunday afternoon, and were almost the only ones there. A volunteer docent spent the entire time explaining everything to us, or leaving us alone to wander when that's what we felt like doing. Again, an absolute treasure of a museum. See more..

    The Zabriskie House image
The Zabriskie House is the home of the Wyckoff Historical Society, who has a small museum on the property of local history, next to a beautiful park that the family donated. The house was built in stages with the central parts being built in the late 1700's and the new addition built in the 1840's and then remodeled in the 1950's by the last owner. She willed it to the town with all the original furnishings so you get to see a glimpse into the life of the previous owners. Don't miss the old kitchen, which is part of the original house. It has a hearth oven and some of the original utensils of the house. The gardens are beautiful in the Spring and remember to tour them. The last owner set up an almost park like status to her gardens that are timed to bloom perfectly one plant at a time. It is really nice to just walk around and experience her game plan. It is a true gem of the local history of the Town of Wyckoff. See more..

  44. 4.0 DAR Elias Van Bunschooten Museum (4 reviews)

DAR Elias Van Bunschooten Museum image
The DAR has done an awesome job at restoring and maintaining this lovely historic house filled with many treasures from the past. According to their brochure, the main house dates back to around 1792. It was built for the Rev. Elias Van Bunschooten who served the Dutch Reformed Church for 40 years. DAR received the property in 1971, including the house and about 6 acres of surrounding land. The house is filled with many original period items, as well as original items from more recent historical periods. The furniture and artifacts present an excellent window into the lives of those living in the 18th and early 19th centuries. We were fortunate to have a very knowledgable docent who answered all our questions and had an excellent grasp over why this museum remains significant in US history. See more..
  45. 4.5 Union City Historical Museum (3 reviews)
    - Great Trip Down Memory Lane
Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums • History Museums
This museum is more of a collection of photos, library memorabilia, building architecture from around town, organization and school items, etc. more so than a museum. Still, it was fascinating to see artifacts of history for the past 100 years. What i found equally exciting was re-entering the old 15th St. library which is where the museum is located. The library has been converted to a cultural center with senior activities and rooms for concerts, etc. The outer facade of the library is still there but the interior woodwork is all gone. That is disappointing but at least revisiting, I could reimagine the way it was. It used to be a fabulous library. Some things should not be modernized. See more..

    - Great Historical site in Dutch Colonial History

    Wortendyke Barn Museum image
The Wortendyke Barn is a must see for history and early Colonial buffs. The barn is one of the few traces of Dutch farming history left in Bergen County and was there for the Revolutionary War period. It has excellent artifacts and the people that work there have good knowledge of the history of the are. It is interesting to see how the barn and the farmhouse across the street played a role in early New Jersey History. In the summer, they have concerts there on the weekend. The parking can be a little sparse when full but try to go during an off weekend. It is a pity that it is only open one day a week. Take the time out to visit this little 'gem' in Bergen County, NJ. The John Fell House image
The John Fell House is a Revolutionary War Era home that was almost demolished to make way for condos. A group of local citizens formed a non-profit to purchase and restore the John Fell House. They are continually working on it and docents give tours and historical talks during a few open houses a year. Each year, they put on a costumed re-enactment of the Arrest of John Fell by the British...a fun event for the whole family. See more..

    - The historic home is closed for renovations

    The Van Allen House image
The Van Allen House will be interesting when the renovations are finally finished at the end of the Fall. The last time I was in the historic home it was falling apart. It had water damage in the ceiling on the second floor. The ladies on the Historical Society told me that it has now been fixed. When I was there, there were weeding and planting the garden. I would visit it in the Fall when the renovation is finished. The place does need some work but it is on a pretty piece of land and the volunteers do their best to make it a pleasant visit. Don't miss the gift shop with the hand made dolls. They are $5.00 and beautiful. See more..
  50. 5.0 The American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark (2 reviews)
    - Excellent and interesting tour on local history with a national affect

The American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark image
The American Labor Museum is an interesting part of the American Labor Union history dealing with the rights of the Paterson, NJ silk workers. The Botto family's home was the site of this movement and the history of the strike and of the family's part of this movement was very interesting. Your tour the entire house with all the family living quarters with period furnishings and then you will visit the galleries on the second floor which deal with the Long-shore Workers. You exit the house with a tour of the grape arbor in the back and the root cellar where all the preserves were held. If you like local history and are part of a union, I think this is a very important museum to visit. See more..
