  1. 5.0 Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart (207 reviews)
    - Absolutely spectacular basilica
    Churches & Cathedrals
Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart image
The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is built on the highest peak in Newark next to Branch Brook Park. The French Gothic Cathedral covers 45,000 square feet, an area equal to that of London’s Westminster Abbey, and is longer and taller than St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Built over a 55-year period, beginning at the turn of the century, the land was purchased in 1871 for $60,000. The cost, initially estimated at $1 million, soon rose to $18 million. Most of the money was raised through large donations and church collections throughout the Archdiocese. The edifice was dedicated on October 19, 1954. The title of "Sacred Heart" honors Jesus Christ's love for humanity. He made the human face of God's love present in Galilee. The same love reached out to us here and now. We invite you to allow the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart to lead you in prayer and to deepen your own faith, hope, and love. See more..
  2. 5.0 Princeton University Chapel (161 reviews)
    - Princeton University Chapel

    Princeton University Chapel image
Princeton University's Chapel is amazing! The word 'chapel' conjures up the image of a small space for quiet reflection and prayer. While it is quiet, as it should be, it is anything but small. The chapel is beautiful and very large. Built around 1920 I believe and in the collegiate gothic style as many of Princeton's building are it is a wonderful place to visit if you are in Princeton. Just a short walk, maybe 100 yards into the campus from Nassau Street, you will come to the front entrance. When inside turn around to see the huge pipe organ in the balcony above the entrance. Christmas concerts there are amazing! Very cool place that is worth the visit especially if you like gothic architecture. See more..

This lovely Gothic Revival Church is just a few blocks away from Princeton University and its myriad of buildings. Beautiful stained glass windows, stone arches and pillars, carvings and more. If you enjoy old churches and lovely stained glass, definitely visit here on a sunny day. I don't know their hours for keeping it open on their website. I have visited one other time, but the church was locked. I haven't attended church here, so I can't vouch for more than the building. (There is parking behind the church, as it faces onto Rt. 206.) Christ Church image
Dating from 1742, this Christ Episcopal Church provides both a sense of history and a place for a contemplative moment away from the noise of the city. A walk through the small historic graveyard (see photo) is interesting and instructive. A new sign explains the impressive history of the Church and its grounds (photo). For example, I learned that the third reading of the Declaration of Independence took place there. There is also an entrance to the grounds on Albany Street. And a public parking garage just up Albany Street. See more..

Sacred Heart is in one of the poorest citiies in the United States. The pastor is Fr. Michael Doyle and has transformed this parish to a vibrant and sacred spot on the planet. The Sunday services are at 8 am and 10:30 am. One of the most beautiful and alive Catholic services you will ever find. The parish has a school, they feed the poor, have a center for transformation and provide refurbished houses to low income folks. Uf you live in the area or visiting, please go to Sacred Heart for a Sunday Mass. You will be glad you did. See more..

Saint Joseph's Parish was founded in 1891 when a group of Polish immigrants . In 1892 Saint Joseph's Church was officially incorporated . Philadelphia architect George I. Lovatt designed a Baroque-style church which was constructed in 1913. In May 1914 the new church was consecrated. We are glad we visited it - it is a remarkable place. The church is beautifully maintained in spite of being located in the troubled city of Camden. The interior is impressive with many unique details. Especially amazing are the stain glass windows. The church has a safe parking lot but if you want to feel completely confident visit it during the times of masses. See more..

  15. 5.0 Cathedral of St. John the Theologian (4 reviews)
    - Magnificent Byzantine Mosaic Iconography
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
This beautiful Cathedral has magnificent architecture and iconography. It is a Greek Orthodox Church and rich with tradition in both the style of the architecture and the location of the beautiful mosaics. The church itself is on a beautiful piece of property and once a year St. John's has a Greek festival with tours of the church so that you can have a better understanding of the rich history involved. The annual festival also offers grilled Greek foods in the outside tents, traditional Greek specialties in the inside tents, and vendors, rides, games. The women of the church make all the delicious Greek pastries themselves for the festival which is usually held the first week in June. However, everyone is also welcome to visit the Church throughout the year for Sunday services -- you don't have to be Greek Orthodox to come to a service to see the beautiful church. See more..

    Ascension Greek Orthodox Church image
This is by far one of the best Byzantine churches we've been blessed to visit. It sits majestically atop the Fairview cliffs overlooking the vast valley below. On a clear day you can see it from as far away as 20 miles. It is adorned by amazing original icons commissioned and painted in Greece. The inside of the huge dome is painted with the icon of "Pantocrator" the icon of Jesus looking down on His flock with compassionate eyes. Close your eyes and surely you will find yourself back in time. Stay and enjoy and partake in the Divine Liturgy, you don't have to be Greek to understand. Prayer is international and this is a jewel that everyone must discover! See more..

This is one of the founding points of New Brunswick and stand over the Monument Park. It is a working church, and one should show appropriate respect. St. Padre Pio Shrine, Landisville, Nj image
This amazing and surprising place appears to be in the middle of nowhere, outdoors and most often - unless you are one of the locals - discovered by serendipity when one stumbles upon it. It is a stunning outdoor shrine surrounded by farmland, modern in its design, with places to sit and pray. It was created in late 1990s by an Italian family of farmers and fully built in 2002. It is a place of local pilgrimage for many Roman Catholics . You will notice statues of Padre Pio, the Blessed Mother, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The shrine has a relic of Saint Padre Pio . Small gift shop featuring religious artifacts and souvenirs serves as an "indoor base" of the 10 acre shrine complex. There are at times outdoor masses and Rosary prayer sessions here. See more..

    - Beautiful Church and nice Art Show
Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
The Episcopal Church of St. John on the Mountain image
The church of “St. John on the Mountain” is a lovely Episcopal house of worship located in the hills of Bernardsville. This beautiful older stone church with its magnificent stained glass windows is dated 1907 above the chapel entrance. What makes this church unique is the modern designed interior of the main worship area; a blend of new and old. What brought us here was “The Mountain Art Show” annually hosted by the church in October. The art show features both juried and non-juried works of art from local and nationally known artists. The drive from route 202 to St. John on the Mountain is very scenic, and rather steep & narrow in areas. See more..

If you have an opportunity to visit Trinity Cathedral, take it. You will not believe this was built in the mid 1930s. the Cathedral’s design resembles something from the mid 1800s. The layout is very Europium. The design of stain glass windows also match an older time. See more..

In your trip down Witherspoon Street, you will pass two small and unassuming local churches. One of them is the Witherspoon Presbyterian Church. Rich with history and the struggles in Princeton of segregation this church hold a special place. This also includes the "womens' heritage trail". Stop and take notice at 112 Witherspoon Street. If you are there on Sunday and feel you can attend with usual respect and curtsy, step in and give a listen, and feel part of the evolving future. We have first seen this church a few years ago likely 2015 while driving through Southampton Township. We came back to check on this interesting sacral building. It has a graceful form and design, white exterior with a contrasting door. The steeple has a cross on top. With its style and form it fits right into the character of the street and part of the town. One cannot easily see the interior except for the service time. See more..

  32. 5.0 Head Of The River Church And Cemetery (1 review)
    - Historic 18th century Methodist church and cemetery.
    Cemeteries • Churches & Cathedrals
This amazing dedicated in 1792 church and cemetery complex is on the National Register of Historic Places . All the history buffs will feel sudden urge to stop and explore it while driving by on route 49. And for a good reason. This church is a remnant of formerly bustling industrial village along the Tuckahoe River. The village experienced its hay-days of relative prosperity and glory when bog iron, cranberry, and timber industries were booming. You can actually combine your visit to the church with a visit to Aetna Furnace nearby. On Head of the River Rd (which forms the fork with Rt 49) there is a place to stop, less than five minutes from the church - Aetna Furnace Historical Marker. It is interesting to follow the perpendicular Aetna Furnace Road towards the Tuckahoe river where one can visit the remnants of the furnace and industrial village. Talking "weird New Jersey". The interior of the church is one room with two floors. It is a simple but beautiful historic structure. A walk through the cemetery is recommended. Many old graves with locally known names. Interesting South Jersey destination. See more..

    - Came for the Christmas Candlelight Service and it was fun
    Churches & Cathedrals
I came to Hope, NJ for a Christmas walking tour and as part of the tour, you could go to the Candlelight Christmas Service at the St. John United Methodist Church, whose cemetery is the one in the movie "Friday the 13th". The inside of the church is one of those old late 19th Century churches made of wood and the pews are all wood with soft pillowy cushions. The service was really nice and put me into the Christmas mood. The Pastors were really nice and the singing was great. Then we had the last part of the service with the candles lit as we sang "Hark the Angels". Talk about the Christmas spirit. Come back during the day and see the famous cemetery entrance by the crossroads which is right down the street from where Annie left the diner. The whole town of Hope was beautifully decorated for Christmas, so you hardly wanted to think of Halloween. See more..

This is a living Christian church in Estell Manor. The building will likely be closed if you visit randomly. - Wonderful and very inspiring Church service for the Epiphany
Thursday: Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
I usually attend the Old Paramus Reformed Church in Ridgewood, an over 200 year old church, for the Epiphany services on the last day of Christmas. Sometimes I think people forget that there are 12 days of Christmas. The church is one of those stone churches with lots of character and was beautifully decorated for Christmas with trees, garland and candles. It looks like a church in a Currier & Ives woodcut and is the type of church you should have Christmas services in. The Reverend was very inspiring and very welcoming that morning and the choir really sounded good. It was an older but very nicely dressed crowd of people. It looked the way a church should run. Even the parishioners bought up small gifts to the church during the service. I thought the whole morning was very inspiring and welcoming. Then afterward, some of the members asked if I would like to stop and have refreshments after services which I thought was a nice gesture. They are a very nice group of people. I have toured the cemetery on historic cemetery walks through the museum next door but going inside and seeing the church up close and experiencing services there was very interesting. See more..

    Saint Mary Magdalen's Church image
This beautiful church continues the traditions of the oldest Catholic parish in Cumberland County in South Jersey. It is located not far from the center of Millville's Arts District and can be incorporated in a nice city walk. The main entrance to the church itself is from Buck street but other Parish buildings face Dock street where there is the entrance to the main parking lot. There are two smaller parking lots on Buck street as well; park there if you come just to visit the church. In the immediate surroundings of the church you will see several interesting statues and a tall crucifix. There is also a large Loretto style grotto between parking lot and rectory building and religious center, former convent. Parallel to the church is the late 19th 3 story historical church/school building. St Mary Magdalen's is known for periodic organ concerts featuring classical and religious music. The high quality organ was brought in from an old demolished Camden house of worship. The church is known for its beautiful stained glass windows, interesting stations of cross, distinctive statues and religious murals especially on both sides of the altar. Currently the Saint Mary Magdalen's church is a part of the Parish of All Saints. See more..
