New Jersey's tallest lighthouse awaits you at Pacific and Rhode Island Avenues in Atlantic City (walking distance from Showboat Casino). Take an amazing journey into time and above it all as you ascend the 228 steps of the Absecon Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the country. You'll see breathtaking views of the Atlantic City skyline and up top you'll come face-to-face with the original first-order Fresnel Lens, first lit in 1857.The lighthouse's recent multi-million dollar restoration also includes a stunning replica of the Lightkeeper's dwelling, an educational museum, charming gift shop, Fresnel Lens exhibit in the original Oil House and expansive grounds. The Absecon Lighthouse is on both the New Jersey and National Registries of Historic Places. I visited the lighthouse on a quick stop after the Christmas holiday in order to check off another New Jersey National Park site. The beach is nice and, I would assume, a pleasant visit during warmer months. The National Parks Ranger and volunteer on site were extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. The tour of the lighthouse was great, with the volunteer giving us information outside the building, then describing its interior architecture once we were inside, before tracing its history from before the American Revolution up through the Cold War. He also pointed out sites along the way, drew comparisons to other lighthouses in the area, and described the unique tidal features that enlarged the Sandy Hook beach so that the lighthouse is currently farther from the ocean than when it was built. Well-worth a day trip! See more..

I recently began exploring lighthouses in NJ after getting a book. Living in Philadelphia, the fact that any lighthouse in NJ is just a couple hours away makes for a great hobby. I visiting the East Point Lighthouse on a crystal clear day in December and it was well worth the trip. The best way to verify when the lighthouse will be open is to call the number they have posted. A ticket to go inside the lighthouse is purchased in the gift shop next door. Parking is anywhere around the lighthouse, there is a parking lot designated for handicapped parking, but it is not on a busy street, so you should easily be able to find a spot. The walk up the lighthouse is easy since it is not high up, but the fun part is walking through the house that is reconstructed to appear as it would be for the lighthouse keeper’s family just after 1900. There are several benches and tables outside if you want to have a seat and take in the scenery. See more..

The Natl. Wildlife Refuge build. is a safety hazard. The grass near the light house is unkempt. Bring LOTS of bug spray! See more..

There's a height restriction for kids, but when you get to the top, what a view! Never realized Philadelphia airport was that close. Not a bad climb, but there is some ducking necessary to get out the lantern room door and onto the catwalk. Easy to get to from I-295, parking is adjacent to recreation complex (baseball fields.)
