I knew an ancestor was buried in a mass grave here for Confederate soldiers who died while imprisoned at nearby Fort Delaware. But I knew little else. This National Cemetery is located in an isolated area between Pennsville, NJ and the Delaware River. The morning we visited there were no one else on site. Though there are a few graves of modern veterans, the monument to the Confederate dead, the well-researched interpretive signs, and the broad, grassy mass grave are the main focus of the cemetery. Additionally, the graves of about a dozen WWII German POWs are also onsite. There is no admission charge; there are portable toilets, there was no caretaker when we were there. See more..

  7. 4.0 Tabernacle Cemetery (2 reviews)
    - Stumbled upon during Pine Barrens exploration.

Lovely old cemetery and we almost missed it. Worth your momentary stop due to locally meaningful history connotations. Both white and Indian families found their final resting place here. Oldest graves are 1700c and 1800s. Earliest graves were behind the church. Most of the markers are too blurry and weathered and cannot be easily read. Famous Ann Roberts, known as “Indian Ann” who was the last of the Delaware Indians was buried here in 1894. She was the daughter of a Delaware chief. For tourists interested in history this is in a sense a major attraction. See more..
  8. 4.0 Gethsemane Cemetery (1 review)
    - Gethsemane Cemetery is a step into the past of local culture
Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas • Cemeteries
The Gethsemane Cemetery is a step into the past of local Bergen County, NJ culture. The cemetery is one of the oldest Black cemeteries in the region and holds the remains of many prominent, local and emancipated black residents of the time. This one acre plot over looks a busy highway and is easy to miss. It is only open a few times a year for special events like Juneteenth or by Appointment so it is touch to see on a regular basis. It is a place of quiet reflection. See more..
  9. 5.0 Head Of The River Church And Cemetery (1 review)
    - Historic 18th century Methodist church and cemetery.
    Cemeteries • Churches & Cathedrals
This amazing dedicated in 1792 church and cemetery complex is on the National Register of Historic Places . All the history buffs will feel sudden urge to stop and explore it while driving by on route 49. And for a good reason. This church is a remnant of formerly bustling industrial village along the Tuckahoe River. The village experienced its hay-days of relative prosperity and glory when bog iron, cranberry, and timber industries were booming. You can actually combine your visit to the church with a visit to Aetna Furnace nearby. On Head of the River Rd (which forms the fork with Rt 49) there is a place to stop, less than five minutes from the church - Aetna Furnace Historical Marker. It is interesting to follow the perpendicular Aetna Furnace Road towards the Tuckahoe river where one can visit the remnants of the furnace and industrial village. Talking "weird New Jersey". The interior of the church is one room with two floors. It is a simple but beautiful historic structure. A walk through the cemetery is recommended. Many old graves with locally known names. Interesting South Jersey destination. See more..

  11. 4.0 Salem Oak/friends Burial Cemetery (1 review)
    - Interesting Historical Cemetery
    Cemeteries
The Salem Oak was an historical tree that stood in the cemetery for over three hundred years and was part of the virgin forest of the area. It was where treaties were signed and where history was made. Unfortunately the tree fell in 2019 due to years of rot inside the tree. There are still large samplings that are hundreds of years old still in the cemetery giving it a majestic look. It really does make a statement. The Salem Friends Cemetery is a standout in its condition and appearance in the middle of the Salem Downtown. The original families of the town are buried here with famous names like Hancock and Bassett. Take time to walk around the historic tombstones and admire the craftsmenship of the stones. It is an interesting look at the city's past. See more..
  12. 4.0 Metuchen Colonial Cemetery (1 review)
    - Metuchen Colonial Cemetery
    Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Cemeteries
This site is easy to miss. It is just South of the train station on the West side of Main St. If you go up the staircase you will be in the cemetery. The cemetery was created in the early1700s. The oldest grave is dated 1731. There are over 60 graves of revolutionary war veterans. Online I could only find one name that died in the war - Patriot meal Campbell. This is worth a visit. 13. 4.0 Old Broad Street Presbyterian Church Cemetery (1 review)
    - Interesting Historical Church and Cemetery
    Cemeteries
The old Broad Street Prebyterian Church and Cemetery is in the middle of a town that is rapidly declining around it. It is almost like an island of the past of the City of Bridgeton. The old church sits in the middle of the downtown like a forgotten sole but it is so steeped in the history of not just the City of Bridgeton and the area but of the state and its Revolutionary War past. The cemetery holds the remains of many of the famous generals and members of the Revolutionary War and many prominent local residents. The only problem is that the cemetery is starting to get overgrown and the tombstones need a lot of care and restoration. Still it is interesting to walk the isles of graves and see who is buried there and get to know their stories. It is really rich in local history. Walking amongst the graves though I felt like I was in an independent horror film in that it was so quiet. Still if you are a history buff and like old cemeteries, this is a must see on the list if you are in the area, See more..

    Mount Pleasant Cemetery image
Mount Pleasant Cemetery is an infused with history most interesting local cemetery. We participated in a two-hour walking tour organized by Millville Historical Society, probably the best way to explore this cemetery. Many locally famous people found their resting place here. Coming to Millville you will hear about the Wheaton family, possibly visit Wheaton Arts and Glass Museum. To see the Wheaton family plot you have to come here. That includes the grave of Dr. T.C. Wheaton, who back in 1888 founded in Millville the Weaton glass company which at some point grew to be the largest family own firm in US as well as Frank Hayes Wheaton Jr., who served for three decades as head of Wheaton Industries. One of the main attractions of this cemetery is the mausoleum of Edward Casper Stokes (1860-1942) former governor of the state of New Jersey. Many members of famous South Jersey families are buried there. One of the cemetery sections holds the resting places of many local civil war veterans and appropriate monument. There is also another veterans' quarter of the Mount Pleasant with the resting places of the First and Second World War fighters and Vietnam veterans. This historic cemetery hosts some distinctive, beautiful and at times unusual memorials, tombs, mausoleums and obelisks. See more..
