  2. 4.0 Feltville Historic District (33 reviews)
    - History and Hiking
    Historic Walking Areas
    Feltville Historic District image
This was a great place to explore in the middle of the woods. As you hike the grounds of the Watchung Reservation, you can learn the history of this mostly abandoned village. Most of the houses are dilapidated and in disrepair but there are history boards to read explaining the significance of each location. The barn has been restored and there is at least one house still in use. I would recommend this place to anyone that has even the smallest interest in history. We spent a couple hours on these grounds. It was a great afternoon of walking and learning. See more..
  3. 4.5 Historic New Bridge Landing (18 reviews)
    - Visited for the Pinkster Festival
    Historic Walking Areas
    Historic New Bridge Landing image
I visited the New Bridge Historic Landing this afternoon for the Pinkster Festival on a rather gloomy day. They had an interesting talk on the history of the Maypole Dance and then did a demonstration with music. It was rather interesting to see how the dance developed. All over the site they had different demonstrations and tours. They need to do a bit more updating in their offerings though as I had seen most of this before. See more..

  5. 4.0 Hopper-Goetschius Museum (2 reviews)
    - Unusual old house with lots of hidden doors and passages
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas • Architectural Buildings
    Hopper-Goetschius Museum image
The Hopper-Goetschius Museum is the home of the Upper Saddle River Historical Society and is the former home of the Hopper and Goetschius families. The house was built in three different sections, so there are a lot of hidden panels and stairs to climb. Don't miss the hidden door in the kitchen to the mysterious second floor and the trip to the basement. The house is 'as is' when the last resident left the house in the 1980's and still has the vintage furniture and knick-knacks of the family. The grounds have an outhouse, working outside kitchen and many historical buildings from the surrounding towns that were going to be knocked down. The barn is loaded with old farm equipment and vehicles like sleighs and wagons from the 1800's and there is lots of gardening things from a time when this was a working farm and rest stand. The house is open only certain times of the year so check the website for more information. See more..
  6. 5.0 Battery John Gunnison (1 review)
    - Blast from the Past
Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas
    Battery John Gunnison image
The Gun Battery located at Gunnison Beach was original built in 1904 for coastal defense and was named after Captain John W. Gunnison. In 1943 the cement platforms were raised and mounted with two 6 inch diameter Barbette guns for use as coastal defense through WWII. Interesting to see what they used to protect our coastal waters in WWII. This is an old site and the cement is eroding and in need of repair as is much of Fort Hancock’s area, but it is still worth checking out on your way to the beach. Parking is available in the Gunnison Beach lot. As a Veteran I appreciate what the park service does to maintain our country’s history. See more..

  8. 4.0 Gethsemane Cemetery (1 review)
    - Gethsemane Cemetery is a step into the past of local culture
Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas • Cemeteries
The Gethsemane Cemetery is a step into the past of local Bergen County, NJ culture. The cemetery is one of the oldest Black cemeteries in the region and holds the remains of many prominent, local and emancipated black residents of the time. This one acre plot over looks a busy highway and is easy to miss. It is only open a few times a year for special events like Juneteenth or by Appointment so it is touch to see on a regular basis. It is a place of quiet reflection. See more..
  9. 5.0 The Old Stone House-Ramsey Historical Society (1 review)
    - Don't miss this historic and interesting old home; it is not open that much
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas • Architectural Buildings
The Old Stone House-Ramsey Historical Society image
The Old Stone House is a Revolutionary War era home in Ramsey, NJ that has sat in the same spot since the early 1700's. The home is run by the Ramsey Historical Society and is open only about three times a year so it is best when it is open to head over and see the property. The house has an interesting display of toys, antique furniture, farm equipment and house hold items. The home has an interesting set of docents who tour and explain the home to you. The grounds are interesting as they are perched up on a hill over looking what was once a farm. Now it is Route 17. The house is open only at certain times of the year for special events so it is best to check out their website. It is really interesting. See more..
