When Gene Muller founded Flying Fish Brewing Co. in 1995, he did so first on the pre-spam/Amazon/Google World Wide Web – making it the world’s first virtual microbrewery. The subsequent attention generated investor and bank interest turning a great idea into great beer at a real brewery in Cherry Hill in 1996. Fast forward a couple of decades and Flying Fish is now located in Somerdale, New Jersey. In a state where the 50 pre-prohibition breweries were reduced to a couple, we were the first microbrewery in South Jersey and are now the largest of the 70 craft breweries in the state. I had an amazing Porter I bought from the store and went back the nest week for another 6 pack. I realized they were local and saw some pics on IG. My friends and I decided to go to find them. The location is tucked away and unexpected but is an amazing experience. The beer is great and the staff was friendly and amazing. This is one of my favorite South Jersey breweries. It’s a great spot for after work happy hours, or just hanging out. They have a great selection of draughts, and a nice bottle shop and apparel store. The place is huge, so they can accommodate big groups. They offer to rent out rooms for private events and parties, but there always seems to be plenty of space, including a nice outside seating area with patio space heaters. You have to visit this place! We love visiting this local brewery, especially when a new beer comes out. They do really well w/all styles of beer but their IPAs are some of the best! It's a cool little place and nice that you can bring your own food if needed. They have a fun setup outside in the nice weather w/tables & usually some games too. Lower Forge was originally the nickname of Washington Furnace, a lost town in the Pine Barrens where the ruins of long-forgotten industry have been swallowed by the forest. It's a place to explore the the things that built our area and our town, past history that was forgotten under the development and modern hustle that blankets New Jersey. For us, our two passions to slow down the modern world were exploring the forgotten towns of the Pine Barrens like Lower Forge - and homebrewing various styles ranging from the traditional to eclectic. When Medford fell on hard times, our founders were part of a group that helped change the idea of what should be in our downtown - and the idea to build Medford's first craft brewery was born. We worked for years to overturn ordinances and local laws that dated back to Prohibition, and campaigned to have our town leaders update restrictions that made it impossible to build something new in our town. Finally, in 2014, after a year and half of hard work - we were able to secure our location on South Main Street and begin building a craft beer brewery. We still had a hard road of sometimes working with and sometimes fighting our town to build the brewery that Main Street needed - and on April 15, 2016 we became Medford's first fully licensed brewery and sold a growler to one of our Main Street neighbors as our first sale. Small events followed, and finally we held a special event on May 12 to welcome members of our Committee of 250 - a special group that helped us open and acts as our inner circle of fans and friends. I came here to attend a baby shower for a family member. The event was held upstairs in a large loft like area. The setting was nice, but they divided the room in half to host another party alongside ours, so it was super noisy and hard to hear. The flight of beer were interesting and the downstairs of the establishment looked cool. Found this place when googling breweries in the area and it had amazing reviews so took the trip there and was go glad we did! They take reservations prior so no need to wait, they have seating at high tops, regular tables and in the special movie room where they play different movies all the time. Their pizza was delicious! Staff was extremely friendly and knowledgable and despite the fact that they were busy, I never felt rushed to decide on my order. Plenty of staff to serve the customers and answer questions.
