    Columbia Trail image
Columbia Trail spans 16.5 miles through sections of Morris County, Washington County, and Hunterdon County. We accessed the Columbia Trail in the little historic town of Long Valley. Parking for trail only is located just off Schooley’s Mountain Road next to the Coffee Potter. Columbia Trail is great for biking, hiking or walking. See more..
  2. 4.5 Stairway to Heaven Trail (61 reviews)
    - Really nice spot!

    Stairway to Heaven Trail image
After figuring out where the heck to park, this is a beautiful trail. Nothing rigorous as far as hiking goes as it's a boardwalk created part of the trail. Only a small section doesn't have the boardwalk. We walked to the bridge and back. Really peaceful, nice scenery, good hike. Def. recommend for a very casual hiker or a family. See more..
  3. 4.5 Buttermilk Falls (46 reviews)
    - New Year's Eve Adventure
Spent More than 3 hours Hiking Trails
    Buttermilk Falls image
It is worth the trip through the pitted and pot-holed road to see one of the tallest waterfalls in New Jersey. The parking lot is across from the waterfalls. There are steps that lead to the top of the falls (over 140 steps). I decided to hike uphill along the Buttermilk Falls Trail (blue blazes) to where it connects with part of the Appalachian Trail. Just be careful as there are rocks and boulders near the top of the Trail and depend on weather can be slippery. Happy trails and enjoy the beauty of nature if you do go see Buttermilk Falls. 5. 5.0 Delaware Water Gap (28 reviews)
    - Natural Beauty and Recreation
Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
    Delaware Water Gap image
As the Delaware River flows south along the Kittatinny Mountains, it looks for a path through the mountains in order to continue its relentless journey southeast to the ocean. Between Mt. Tammany and Mt. Minsi, not far from East Stroudsburg, PA, the river finds the gap it needs and flows through creating a wonderfully scenic natural area. Although man now shares the gap with the river, using it as a corridor for railroads, Interstate 80, Hwy 611 and the Appalachian Trail, it remains surprisingly wild; offering hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing and a sanctuary for wildlife that includes deer, bear and wild turkeys, not far from New York City and Philadelphia. The best views of the Delaware Water Gap are from overlooks near the summit of Mt. Tammany along the strenuous Red Dot Trail accessed from the Dunnfield Creek Natural Area parking lot. See more..

This trail is great for a family bike ride or hike. It's well maintained and there are ports-potties along the way. It's been expanded in recent years and is great. Just be careful crossing Rt 539!!! See more..
  7. 5.0 Lawrence Hopewell Trail (21 reviews)
    - Adds a great dimension to the local area
    Hiking Trails
    Lawrence Hopewell Trail image
The America that emerged from the 1980's and 1990's was a convenience driven culture with the automobile dominating transportation and a lack of public spaces to enjoy. Fortunately a group of people in Hopewell and Pennington had the foresight to create this network of trails that meander through the countryside highlighting its beauty. Whether you are walking, running, biking, exercising your dog or fishing in one of the lakes there is a lot to enjoy. The infrastructure built along the trail has been done with great taste, it does not detract from nature but adds to the usability of the trails. Parking access at a number of locations is excellent and the connection to the Watershed and Honeybrook Organic farm also adds to the dimensions of the local area. Having lived here for a number of years I can certainly say that the trail has added a hugely important and welcome dimension for local residents. See more..
  8. 4.0 South Mountain Fairy Trail (21 reviews)
    - Afternoon kids walk.
    Hiking Trails
    South Mountain Fairy Trail image
It was kid friendly. (Depending on the age of the kid.) It can get steep at times for little ones, so be prepared to carry them when they start to throw a tantrum and refuse to walk. Although a lot of the fairy houses needed some care, it was still fun for the kids to find them along the way. Not bad at all. Nearby restaurants are abundant around the area after the walk as well. Appalachian Trail - Pochuck Boardwalk image
I took my 15 y.o. and 8 y.o. on a hike of Pochuck Boardwalk and the Stairway to Heaven. The boardwalk was a very interesting place, although I wouldn't really call that a hike. It's more of a nature walk. Beautiful photo opportunities the whole way. Then you cross the road and end up on the Stairway to Heaven- the real hike! Get there early enough and the parking becomes a non-issue. I recommend this to everyone I speak to, you should do it too! See more..
  11. 5.0 Terhune Memorial Park (12 reviews)
    - Home of the Sunnybank collies
    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
    Terhune Memorial Park image
My first trip to Sunnybank, the former home of Albert Payson Terhune and his collies was amazing. I arrived at sunset then came back the next morning pre-dawn. After a glorious sunrise, I explored the park in quiet solitude, only the birds and the woodland creatures sang their accompaniments. To see the graves of the great collies, including Lad, Wolf, Bruce, Fair Ellen, Sigardson, Treve, Jean was a moving experience. One could almost feet the presence of the collies. Then the park came to life with hundreds of collies and their owners attending The Gathering sponsored by the Collie Health Club (third weekend in August). This is an amazing experience not to be missed. A small park preserves the area where ATP's home and collie kennels once were located. One can see the fire blue lake - Pompton Lake and dream of what was. If I could give this six stars, I would. See more..
  12. 4.5 Sparta Glen (11 reviews)
    - Great Little Hike
    Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
    Sparta Glen image
The Sparta Glen has gone through some tough times. Back in the 70s it was a beautiful glen with an iron-rich stream running through shaded by towering hemlocks. Unfortunately, the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid defoiled the hemlocks and changed forever the look at the bottom of the glen. 20+ years later, the glen is coming back albeit as a deciduous forest. What still makes the glen great is the hiking. To get to the top, park at the porta-john and walk up to the pavilion. There will be an unmarked path there that will take you up the mountain with a bit of scrambling. For a less difficult hike, there are marked trails starting below the parking area. Once on top, there is a network of trails that at times do not make sense but are wonderful none-the-less. See more..

I love this park. The view of Paterson is great at the top of the hill. You even see it in your car. The park is clean. You can hike or go fishing if you like. There is a castle there. Sometimes you can see deers hopping around or eating grass. You can also have barbeque(tables and grills), play basketball(basketball court), and other outdoor activities. See more..

    - Excellent Bike Trail
    Hiking Trails
    Lawrence Hopewell Trail image
I checked out this trail for the first time today and was favorably impressed. I parked at the Rosedale Park access, which I would do again. There was ample parking, restrooms, and a water fountain. The trail itself, at least the parts I explored, is crushed gravel for a smooth ride. There are many scenic stretches and a few minor inclines. I even passed another restroom at about 2.8 miles for added convenience. The trail was also sparsely occupied on a Friday afternoon and I only encountered a few other people. My one criticism is that the signage could be improved. I know at least one prior reviewer has noted the same thing. More than once I had to backtrack and find the trail again. It is no big deal if you know the trail well already but it can be annoying the first time you visit so be vigilant. See more..

    Hunterdon County Arboretum image
Recently my wife and I visited Hunterdon County Arboretum & Park. We’ve been here years ago and enjoyed what we saw then so we returned and walked around the enclosed garden area again and this time checked out the pond and gazebo in the back. I took plenty of pictures of interesting plants and insects. Spring and fall are also good months to visit this Arboretum and Park. This is a nice place to have a picnic. See more..

Enjoyed our walk here. Overall trails are well marked, though there were a few that were either unmarked or not on the map. I do hope they update those soon. Can be a bit muddy so don't go after a recent rain. Appreciated that they had garbage cans throughout the park. See more..
  20. 1.5 Marilyn Beard Trailhead Park (3 reviews)
    - Same as previous review
    Hiking Trails • Forests
My review is only based on the premise that this is a car/truck trail thru the Pine Barrens of NJ (which is how it was sold to me). I decided to try this trail on my way home yesterday (nice day and had time to kill). What the previous review quoted is still accurate over a year later. I got as far as the humming powerlines where I could finally turn around and didn't bother going any further. I have a typical SUV - nothing offroad or fancy, and in some sections of the road I was hoping I wouldn't get stuck in the sand (thank god I didn't have a car cause it would have been a very short trip - and I would have had to back out). I didn't see any markers - I actually kept asking the person I was with if it was private property. I def. won't be back. If I had an ATV/dirt bike, it may be fun. I'm used to upstate PA mountain trails that are maintained -- not paved - just gravel or compact dirt. Something to drive on to enjoy nature. See more..

  22. 3.0 Blueberry Hill Conservation Area (2 reviews)
    - Attractive scenic hiking and biking.

    Blueberry Hill Conservation Area image
What a sense of serendipity to finally get to this genuine hill ,a mountainous enclave in Southern New Jersey. Blueberry Hill was recommended to us by other hikers but it was our first time there. The terrain is perfect for hiking and biking with trail accommodating both activities. The area has well delineated trails, mostly paved and many handicapped accessible in spite of the elevations. Great for jogging. Several miles of paved and dirt trails, stairs leading up the hill which opens up with a view of Philadelphia’s skyline, beautiful surrounding nature. Part of the area opens to the Quarry by Blueberry Hill with lake. You can also cross the road (United States Ave ) and keep on going further. The parking is well designed. There also benches to allow for relaxation. Many visitors walk their dogs here. See more..
  23. 5.0 Franklin Park Natural Area (2 reviews)
    - Nature with Benefits!

    Franklin Park Natural Area image
The Franklin Park tract has fields that are currently leased to a nearby farmer with trails running along the edges of several fields. A small portion of the trail goes through a mature forest. Perhaps the most interesting feature on this site is the 30-foot high red-rock cliff that overlooks the stream. NJ’s geology resulted, in part, from continent collision and the subsequent breakup of the supercontinent and with the formation of the Atlantic Ocean. This resulted in a huge basin forming in NJ that slowly filled up with sediment like a lake. That lake shale is what one looks at when down at the Ten mile Run cliffs. This is called the Passaic Formation and runs right through parts of NY, NJ and into PA. The way the rock breaks up is distinctive. The red color is typical of lake sediments that were exposed to oxygen-rich water during deposition allowing for minerals especially iron, to oxidize. The reason that we see only a relatively small outcropping here and there of this red shale is because of more "recent" glaciation and subsequent erosion. Passive See more..

  25. 4.0 Crater Lake Trail (2 reviews)
    - Beautiful glacial lake, easy hikes
    Hiking Trails
Length: 1.6 miles, loop Difficulty: Easy-moderate Elevation Change: 111 feet Crater Lake is glacial lake left behind after the Wisconsin Glacier retreated from this area about twenty-two thousand years ago. This beautiful setting attracted developers and in the mid-1900s, this was a budding vacation community. Today, the Crater Lake Trail loops around the lake through the ridge-top forest. To extend the hike, a half-mile trail connects to the Hemlock Pond Trail and on to Blue Mountain Lake Trail, or hike along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Because the inner-connecting road traces can be confusing, a trail map is recommended. The Audubon Society studies Timber Rattlesnakes and Golden-winged Warblers here; contact them at njaudubon.org for more info. See more..

This park is often in use by soccer and other sports teams. But also on property are multiple trails to explore, which are great. I often stop by here with my dogs and just explore the woods nearby. Lots of geocaches and other fun things to do in this park. If you live near here, check it out next time you're looking for somewhere to explore. See more..

  28. 5.0 Willingboro Lakes County Park (1 review)
    - What A Strange but Fun Experience!
Bodies of Water • Hiking Trails • Forests
If you have ever been stopped at a certain traffic light on Rt 130 North, you're sitting next to Willingboro Lakes County Park. We have been meaning to visit this park forever since we've driven past it for years. The county finally overhauled the park, creating a new, safer entrance, a picnic grove, and a play area. The trails have been upgraded. I know, a park along busy Rt 130 doesn't sound thrilling, correct? But once you loop at the back of the larger lake, it's relatively quiet and pleasant. The actual lakes are in a pit (this was a former quarry) so you definitely go up and down along the lake's edge. Even when you walk between the two lakes and can definitely hear the traffic, you can still turn away and tune it out. Plus there are frogs, turtles, ducks, and birds, which pleases these two old ladies. We just like nature! Be warned: if you don't like dogs, you won't like this park. Many local folks use the park to exercise their pups. Oh the whole the pups were on leashes and well-behaved. See more..
  29. 4.0 Crosswicks Creek Park (1 review)
    - Hiking, fishing, kayaking and biking area around Crosswicks Creek.
Parks • Hiking Trails • Kayaking & Canoeing
    Crosswicks Creek Park image
We spent the entire delightful day exploring the Croswicks Creek Park. At first it seemed a little confusing with various access points and its elongated shape which follows the creek. Many trails were informal but paradoxically very well delineated in the form of mowed field paths. The historic Walnford is in the middle o the Crosswick Creek Park. The creek is good for kayaking and canoeing but it is a bit unregulated and there are many trees and minor obstacles in the water. See more..
  30. 3.0 Perrinville Lake Park (1 review)
    - Ticks
Spent < 1 hour Hiking Trails
Have gone twice. Unfortunately there's not a lot of trails and only 1 loop trail. The park is also a bit broken up with major roads going through so double check your parking lot. As with many areas in the NE, it is also heavily infested with ticks. So make sure you wear repellent. I do appreciate the maps at each parking lot. See more..
  31. 4.0 Tall Pines State Preserve (1 review)
    - Easy pleasant hiking trails
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Hiking Trails
We usually comfortably park at the ample, large parking lot where Glassboro Rd, Salina and Barkbridge Rd cross. There is a trailhead there and the entrance leading to several trails. The information board has scannable HR codes giving the visitors trail and nature preserve map. The trails are mostly paved which makes them handicap-accessible and easy for everyone including multigenerational families. There are no entrance or parking fees. The Perimeter (Green) Trail is a 2.37 mile loop easy and paved, scenic , crossing two bridges - is our favorite. There is also a very easy and pleasant Red Trail which is a half-mile loop on the Deptford side. See more..
