Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum image
Naval Air Station Wildwood Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to restore Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport, Cape May County, New Jersey, into an aircraft museum honoring the Navy airmen who died while training during World War II. Hangar # 1 was listed onto the National Register of Historic Places in September of 1997. Naval Air station (NAS) Wildwood was commissioned on April 1, 1943. The site served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility from 1943 to 1945. Aircraft stationed at NAS Wildwood included TBM Avengers, Douglas Dauntlesses, Vought Corsairs and Curtiss Helldivers. Forty-two airmen perished while training at NAS Wildwood during World War II. In June 1997, NASW Foundation purchased Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. The 92,000 square-foot all-wooden structure was in a state of disrepair and required extensive renovation. Under the stewardship of NASW Foundation, the hangar was listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places at the National Significance Level. NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum now boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs and more. Additionally, the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia has provided NAS Wildwood with a wealth of interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight. The museum also features a library, food vending area as well as a recently expanded gift shop. In its role as a community resource, NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum regularly hosts activities including fly-ins, aviation festivals, big band concerts, swing dances, veterans’ ceremonies, historical lectures, school field trips and senior tours. Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park image
My Brother in Law is named after Thomas Edison and Father in Law runs an electrical wholesale business so when on a trip to New York we couldn’t not take a half day trip out to this place. Although small, just two rooms (one for Edison’s life story and one showcasing his inventions) the tour lasted an hour but was constantly engaging and entertaining. Two guides did the tour, a room each and both were great. We got to handle a few of the objects and also had access to the memorial outside with its everlasting lightbulb. Even if we didn’t have the connection to Edison i would have enjoyed this museum it was also a nice break from the manic hustle and bustle of New York City and see part of the “real” America See more..

I've been to Liberty Hall Museum on several occasions - Easter Egg hunt (three times!), special event openings (Travel Tour, Toys Tour), Trivia Happy Hour (the theme changes each month). The house is almost exactly the way the Kean family left it at the turn of the century. It's filled with New Jersey history. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about the house itself, the Kean family, and the various time periods the family lived there. There is always something going and always something different. Gift shop, fire house, main house, carriage house, and the grounds - for all ages. A New Jersey must-see! Founder W. Parsons Todd (1877-1976) endowed MHHM as a resource for all Morristown and Morris County residents. Batsto Historic Village Museum image
Batsto Village is a wonderful place to visit. All the historical homes in NJ are. This trip however was just for the hiking trail. Today is 97° and sunny and we choose to do the WHITE trail which is a 4 mile loop. We are very physically fit and this hike, even in this heat, wouldn't normally bother us. What no one told us though, and the point of this review, is that a full mile and a half straight of this hike is in full sun. We assumed, as with most hikes in the woods, that it would have mostly tree coverage. So please be aware! We started the loop on the left, which was lovely and mostly wooded and shaded. I wish we had started on the right and gotten the full sun out of the way early on. But next time, we will just do the blue trail (1.8 miles) twice, which looked like a better option. I hope this review helps our fellow hikers in the future. See more..

I love this delightful little museum. They always mount a really interesting exhibition even with their limited space. The new exhibition is "Object Lessons" on objects that were in people's homes and life styles that were lived in early Ridgewood. There were artifacts from the Lenape Indians, early Dutch settlers and objects from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Each of them take the perspective from the home and experiences. In the back of the museum is an extensive toy display with old board games, dolls, kitchen items including a plug in over from the 1930's and all sorts of items on wheels to amuse a fussy child. It is a nice way to the spend afternoon. See more..

    Mahwah Museum image
Sometimes little museums get overlooked because people think there isn't enough of interest to make the trip worthwhile. So wrong! The Mahwah Museum is a terrific place to visit! You could easily spend one hour browsing the exhibits...maybe two hours if you chat with the very knowledgeable staff. We drove down from Putnam County in NY because we love history. You start with an exhibit about the local Lenape tribe from times prior to European settlement to present day. Then you move on to an exhibit of the famous Palisades Park amusement park. Lots of great memorabilia. Aound the corner is a fantastic Les Paul exhibit, who was a Mahwah resident. From there you learn about the creation of Ramapo College, and finally there's enormous model train exhibit downstairs. Spend time enjoying all the little details of the model as it has taken many years to build. The museum staff are very friendly and enjoy engaging with visitors. Don't pass this by. See more..

My sister in law and I recently had a tour of the Hermitage Museum and found it totally interesting. The history of the family and seeing mostly original pieces of the home or of the period was a real treat. We were a little disappointed that the tour guide didn't know much about the current wedding exhibition but she was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the home and that family who lived there. This digital planetarium provides different astronomy and laser (with music) shows. The parking is easy in parking 7 with rapid access to the planetarium. There is a shop and an exhibit area while the planetarium itself is at the end of the exhibit area. The show we watched "Two small pieces of glass" was about the telescope and what could be observed the different types of telescope. It was didactic without being pedantic and it was understandable for teenagers too. This lasted around 40 min. The second show we watched was a laser show using the dome for the projections. Although I enjoyed the music, it was less impressive than observing space. See more..

As a native New Jerseyan who grew up near Perth Amboy, I was interested in touring this historic place on a recent visit to the area. Though the restoration is still a work in progress, my friends and I found the Proprietary House well worth visiting. Our tour guide, Renee Skelton, was excellent. A born and probably trained historian, she pitched her presentation to our four person group just right--informative, clear, selecting interesting details, and never lapsing into a canned singsong recitation or child-geared tone, as guides sometimes do. We had many questions, and she was impressively prepared because she clearly loves this stuff. Nice bookstore/giftshop, too. Parking was easy, as there is a small lot on the premises. See more..

    The Zabriskie House image
The Zabriskie House is the home of the Wyckoff Historical Society, who has a small museum on the property of local history, next to a beautiful park that the family donated. The house was built in stages with the central parts being built in the late 1700's and the new addition built in the 1840's and then remodeled in the 1950's by the last owner. She willed it to the town with all the original furnishings so you get to see a glimpse into the life of the previous owners. Don't miss the old kitchen, which is part of the original house. It has a hearth oven and some of the original utensils of the house. The gardens are beautiful in the Spring and remember to tour them. The last owner set up an almost park like status to her gardens that are timed to bloom perfectly one plant at a time. It is really nice to just walk around and experience her game plan. It is a true gem of the local history of the Town of Wyckoff. See more..

It looked very nice on the website so we decided to give it a try. Tickets are 24 each for adults and kids, 72 for a family of 3, total rip-off after you see what’s expecting you inside. There is a big warehouse filled with small cheaply made “activity stations”, a few moving dinosaurs (without sounds effect), short boring Dino snow, large overpriced store in the middle and that’s it. You can see the disappointment at your kids faces after 10 minutes inside this “attraction”. Absolute ripoff for the “activities” they provide. Just don’t go, it’s so much not worth it. See more..

This museum is more of a collection of photos, library memorabilia, building architecture from around town, organization and school items, etc. more so than a museum. Still, it was fascinating to see artifacts of history for the past 100 years. What i found equally exciting was re-entering the old 15th St. library which is where the museum is located. The library has been converted to a cultural center with senior activities and rooms for concerts, etc. The outer facade of the library is still there but the interior woodwork is all gone. That is disappointing but at least revisiting, I could reimagine the way it was. It used to be a fabulous library. Some things should not be modernized. See more..

James Marshall left Lambertville in the early 1800s and headed out to California. Turns out he has the distinction of being the first person to discover gold and, hence, started the Gold Rush! There are only 4 rooms and exhibitions in the entire museum but it gives a sense of what homes were like in Lambertville in the early 1800s. Upstairs is an exhibit on the history of Lambertville. They also have a video on the history of Lambertville. A very knowledge and sweet docent kindly greet you and provide a tour and answer questions. We loved it! Great for folks who want a quick overview of Lambertville on their first visit. Amazing historic quilts! See more..

The American Labor Museum/Botto House National Landmark image
The American Labor Museum is an interesting part of the American Labor Union history dealing with the rights of the Paterson, NJ silk workers. The Botto family's home was the site of this movement and the history of the strike and of the family's part of this movement was very interesting. Your tour the entire house with all the family living quarters with period furnishings and then you will visit the galleries on the second floor which deal with the Long-shore Workers. You exit the house with a tour of the grape arbor in the back and the root cellar where all the preserves were held. If you like local history and are part of a union, I think this is a very important museum to visit. See more..

  48. 3.0 Little Red Schoolhouse (2 reviews)
    - Little Schoolhouse gives a taste of schools of the past
Spent < 1 hour History Museums
While walking in the neighborhood we came across the Little Red Schoolhouse near the Robbinsville branch of the Mercer County library and Robbinsville senior center. It is the last remaining of 6 schoolhouse that had served the community up until 1916 (the building was set to be destroyed when the NJ Turnpike was built). We decided to see if it was open and went inside. They had information about the history of the school house and it was set up like a school from a bygone era. There is a dunce cap and one legged stool, desks and benches, a replica pump, a teacher's desk and some other miscellaneous information. It's NOT a big museum with lots of information - just a small local museum with this and that but it is fun thing to stop by and see on a rainy day for locals that are interested in history. Though only open on weekends (Fri-Sun) May through September, this home is well worth a visit. Larger than it looks it is a Dutch/English style home that is furnished with artifacts from the era. A $5 admission is charged for non Monmouth County Historical Association members (half price for seniors, children and students. Note there is no plumbing in the house so..(ahem).... take care of business ahead of time. Try to get there for Wool Days in the spring when Longstreet farm shears the sheep and sends it up to this house to be carded and spun. See more..
