    - One of Our Favorite East Coast Stops!
    Thursday: Historic Sites • Parks
Thomas Edison National Historical Park image
My wife and I visited in early September. We are from rural Minnesota. Needless to say, we were a little nervous about navigating the metro New York City freeway traffic to get to Thomas Edison National Historical Park and a little uncertain on what to expect for the neighborhood surrounding the park. Thankfully, everything turned out great, and Thomas Edison National Historical Park was one of our favorite stops on our 10-day East Coast trip!! I keep revisiting in my mind how touring the grounds felt like Thomas Edison and his crew took a lunch break and to expect them back in an hour. Everything seemed so very well preserved - just amazing! Realize there are endless things to do in and around New York City, but please make an effort to stop here - you will be extremely delighted with your stay and have many wonderful stories to tell family and friends. Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park image
My Brother in Law is named after Thomas Edison and Father in Law runs an electrical wholesale business so when on a trip to New York we couldn’t not take a half day trip out to this place. Although small, just two rooms (one for Edison’s life story and one showcasing his inventions) the tour lasted an hour but was constantly engaging and entertaining. Two guides did the tour, a room each and both were great. We got to handle a few of the objects and also had access to the memorial outside with its everlasting lightbulb. Even if we didn’t have the connection to Edison i would have enjoyed this museum it was also a nice break from the manic hustle and bustle of New York City and see part of the “real” America See more..
  9. 5.0 Princeton University Chapel (161 reviews)
    - Princeton University Chapel
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
    Princeton University Chapel image
Princeton University's Chapel is amazing! The word 'chapel' conjures up the image of a small space for quiet reflection and prayer. While it is quiet, as it should be, it is anything but small. The chapel is beautiful and very large. Built around 1920 I believe and in the collegiate gothic style as many of Princeton's building are it is a wonderful place to visit if you are in Princeton. Just a short walk, maybe 100 yards into the campus from Nassau Street, you will come to the front entrance. When inside turn around to see the huge pipe organ in the balcony above the entrance. Christmas concerts there are amazing! Very cool place that is worth the visit especially if you like gothic architecture. See more..

Lambert Castle, referred to as "The Castle" by many local residents, is the late Victorian-era mansion of former silk magnate Catholina Lambert. It was in the castle that Catholina Lambert displayed many of his prized European and American paintings. The historic site represents one of several rare examples of castellated residential architecture in America. Lambert Castle was listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1975 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. For a long stretch of time, visitors were invited to explore permanent period room exhibits and indulge in scenic view of the New York City skyline. The museum also presented changing exhibits that reflected the local history of Passaic County. Today, Lambert Castle is under renovation and closed to the public. - An amazing part of NJ, American and food history!
    Thursday: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Historic Sites
    Whitesbog Village image
Many folks in NJ are not aware of the scope of the Pine Barrens - 1/4 of the state is uninhabited pine lands. Whitesbog village is at the northern edge of the Pine Barrens, about halfway between Philadelphia and the shore. It is accessible by 'hardtop road' and well worth a visit. The drive on sand roads through the old cranberry bogs and past the site where Elizabeth White cultivated the first commercial blueberry is a remarkable experience. I've taken people from all over the US, Europe and South America there, and all have been amazed. Beautiful drive, and a well preserved turn-of-the-century village where the commercial blueberry was born (and cranberries are still grown). The general store is where I buy all my jams and jellies, not to mention books on the area and Jersey devil shirts. A great starting point to learn about the Pine Barrens, and an experience that you will never forget. See more..

  25. 4.5 East Point Lighthouse (21 reviews)
    - Well worth the drive to see this beauty!
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lighthouses
    East Point Lighthouse image
I recently began exploring lighthouses in NJ after getting a book. Living in Philadelphia, the fact that any lighthouse in NJ is just a couple hours away makes for a great hobby. I visiting the East Point Lighthouse on a crystal clear day in December and it was well worth the trip. The best way to verify when the lighthouse will be open is to call the number they have posted. A ticket to go inside the lighthouse is purchased in the gift shop next door. Parking is anywhere around the lighthouse, there is a parking lot designated for handicapped parking, but it is not on a busy street, so you should easily be able to find a spot. The walk up the lighthouse is easy since it is not high up, but the fun part is walking through the house that is reconstructed to appear as it would be for the lighthouse keeper’s family just after 1900. There are several benches and tables outside if you want to have a seat and take in the scenery. See more..

  29. 4.5 Drumthwacket (15 reviews)
    - Christmas with The Governors
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Government Buildings
    Drumthwacket image
My husband and I took the Christmas grand tour of Drumthwacket, which is the official New Jersey Governor's mansion. It was marvelous! Before going, it was necessary to register online. Upon arrival, New Jersey State Troopers coordinated parking and entry into the mansion. At Christmas, various horticulture groups of New Jersey beautifully decorate the mansion, then their volunteers serve as docents in each room. Visitors were allowed to tour the Governor's formal dining room, the sun porch, the parlor, music and/or gathering room, the library and the Governor's office; and of course, all of the magnificent outdoor gardens and grounds. This visit was a Christmas treat. It was free of charge, and Christmas cookies from a local bakery were freely given out to visitors. I would highly recommend a tour of this wonderful mansion, which is especially beautiful at Christmas. I would've included photos, but photography is limited at the mansion. Parking was ample and also free of charge. See more..
  30. 4.5 Salem County Historical Society (7 reviews)
    - Nicely set up and interesting exhibitions and artifacts
Thursday: 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
    Salem County Historical Society image
The Salem County Historical Society Museum is one of the best historical societies I have ever been to in all my visits to this type of museum. Their displays are well mounted and they have plenty of literature to back it up without being boring. What I like most about the Society is the building that it is housed in. These small houses have been so well maintained and nicely decorated. The small Keeping Room which is the oldest part of the house is set up with all the cooking items and family wares as it would being the center point of the home. This was beautifully decorated at Christmas time. The artifacts are also well maintained. There is a large assortment of Revolutionary War items including a ring with a lock of George Washington's hair and the Inaguration dress of Sarah Hancock Sinnickson, a local politican's wife who came from a prominent family who wore this to Washington's Ball. That was interesting. There are displays on the local Ice Cream industry, the Columbia Exposition of Chicago, a great display of grandfather clocks and a great Native American display of cooking and hunting artifacts. It is a really a hidden gem in Southern New Jersey. See more..

    Historic Sites
    Whitman Stafford House image
After Walt Whitman moved to Camden nj to live with his brother and to regain his health, he visited the Stafford Farm in Gloucester county, now Camden County in NJ. Whitman being a writer came in contact with one of the Stafford children who was a printers devil ( learning to be a printer) who invited him to the farm. Whitman hit it off with the family and the visits became prolonged and as his health improved, he wrote about the area in Specimen Days. Laurel Springs has restored the farm house, added a park in front of the farm house and also restored Crystal Spring Park on Big Timber Creek. Whitman use to work out on the trees and bake in the Green marl. He credits the food prepared by Mrs Stafford and the exercise at Crystal Springs that helped him to restore his health. The grounds at both parks are open, free dawn to dusk. The farm house has been restored and is open by appointment through the Laurel Springs Boro Clerk's office. 856 784 0500 or 856 783 8040. The barn is one of the few traces of Dutch farming history left in Bergen County and was there for the Revolutionary War period. It has excellent artifacts and the people that work there have good knowledge of the history of the are. It is interesting to see how the barn and the farmhouse across the street played a role in early New Jersey History. In the summer, they have concerts there on the weekend. The parking can be a little sparse when full but try to go during an off weekend. It is a pity that it is only open one day a week. Take the time out to visit this little 'gem' in Bergen County, NJ. Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites
    General Grant House image
Most people are not aware that during the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant moved his wife and children here to get them away from the fighting in the south. After the surrender of Appomattox, General Grant begged off going to Ford's Theater with President and Mary Lincoln so that he could get back to Burlington to see his children (his wife, Julia, was with him). On April 14, 1865, he got as far as Philadelphia by train, before learning that Abraham Lincoln had been shot. He continued on to Burlington, left Julia at this home on Wood Street, before returning to Washington, DC the next day. General Grant did not spend much time here and I am not sure how long after the Civil War his family remained living here. But it is interesting to know that this house on this small, quiet street played a part in the history of this time. THIS IS A PRIVATE HOME! Please observe from the street and/or sidewalk. Do not go into the yard or knock on the door. See more..

    Hopper-Goetschius Museum image
The Hopper-Goetschius Museum is the home of the Upper Saddle River Historical Society and is the former home of the Hopper and Goetschius families. The house was built in three different sections, so there are a lot of hidden panels and stairs to climb. Don't miss the hidden door in the kitchen to the mysterious second floor and the trip to the basement. The house is 'as is' when the last resident left the house in the 1980's and still has the vintage furniture and knick-knacks of the family. The grounds have an outhouse, working outside kitchen and many historical buildings from the surrounding towns that were going to be knocked down. The barn is loaded with old farm equipment and vehicles like sleighs and wagons from the 1800's and there is lots of gardening things from a time when this was a working farm and rest stand. The house is open only certain times of the year so check the website for more information. See more..

The architecture and industrries of Bloomfield as they once were and now are is documented in old postcards and old and new photos, and maps. Lecturers are invited to talk on a variety of subjects. engaged in reconstruction - Our own Rich Rockwell is inspiring, actively bringing back to life an old structure, the Collins house; working on a GreenwayProject . My Rent-A-Kid (11 years old) enjoyed this hike from the State Line Lookout recently. Look for the Long Path markers, and walk south following the hand out maps distributed at the kiosk. The walk through the ravine is very interesting, and kids like the castle at the end of the tour. Both levels have fantastic views. See more..

    - I only got to visit the grounds-the house was closed
    Thursday: Historic Sites
I was a little annoyed that I came all the way from Northern New Jersey to tour the house and it is opened such a limited amount of time. The house is only open from 1:00pm-4:00pm on Sundays and when I got to the house about ten minutes before closing, there was no one around to even talk to at the house. No one would answer the door. I was able to tour the grounds though and they are quite spectacular with a view of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. I guess I will have to wait until the next trip. See more..

This was a very clean and proffessional space I went here for a friends event and was blown away by not only the decor but the overall service that we revieved since we walked through the door. The music was loud for the party and even more fun for us in the party. Great experience 10/10 would do again See more..
