  1. 4.5 Elmwood Cemetery (407 reviews)
    - Interesting Memphis history shared during historical cemetery tour!
    Saturday: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Cemeteries
    Elmwood Cemetery image
We often visit historic cemeteries in the cities we visit while on roadtrips so looked into a visit to Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis. And found that they had a special tour event that weekend....their annual Soul of the City tour, and this year it featured Memphis Music! Since it was our first visit to this cemetery, we chose to attend the 5:30 tour so that it was still light out. Run by the cemetery volunteers group, this tour tells the story of selected cemetery residents (based on the theme) told by volunteers taking on the persona of another cemetery resident. The stories were interesting and compelling, and the historical reenactors terrific in their presentations. $20 per person. The tour lasted about an hour. A great way to learn a little Memphis Music history! We will definitely visit the cemetery should we have another opportunity to visit Memphis! See more..

The National Cemetery is open dawn to dusk for visitation. The grounds were very well maintained. Every headstone represents a hero; however, I spent a little extra time at the grave of Medal of Honor recipient, Desmond Doss. See more..
  3. 4.5 McGavock Confederate Cemetery (393 reviews)
    - Largest private Confederate cemetery in America.

    McGavock Confederate Cemetery image
The fact that over 900 names of the dead were actually found out of the over 1,400 fatalities is amazing. This is a well preserved cemetery on the Carnton Plantation grounds and a testament to the horrors of war. If I am correct this is the largest private Confederate cemetery in the country. There is a cost to visit the mansion but the cemetery ground are free to visit for all. That being said do visit the mansion if time allows. See more..

    Andrew Johnson National Cemetery image
The highlight of this small cemetery is the impressive monument over the grave of President Johnson & his wife. This monument & other smaller monuments on the graves of other family members of President Johnson are surrounded by a small wrought iron fence. This cemetery is on the top of a small hill that has nice view of the surrounding area. Besides being historic, this is a nice, peaceful place to visit. See more..
  7. 4.5 Meriwether Lewis Park and Monument (63 reviews)
    - Worth the short visit

Meriwether Lewis Park and Monument image
As a fan of Lewis & Clark, I made it a priority to visit this place during a recent trip to Nashville. Located about an hour away from Nashville, this spot is worth the short visit. You can walk part of the old Natchez Trace and learn about its history. There's also ample signage about Lewis and the untimely demise that occurred there. The monument itself is located in a large field where other pioneers are buried. There are no headstones over their graves, but there are flat markers located in the field. Many are overgrown with grass, so you can step on them by mistake if you're not careful. The monument for Lewis is in very good shape and the significance of the broken column is a bit sobering. The cemetery is still interesting, but several years ago the large trees guarding the entrance were cut down, thus allowing more of the outside world in. The headstones are interesting, dating back to civil war era. Some stones are hard to read due to age. This cemetery is always clean and groomed. Great way to pass some time. At Halloween they offer a ghostly tour in civil war era attire while telling historical stories of the graveyards inhabitants. See more..

My husband & I were on our way to tour the distillery. As soon as we came into Trimble, on the hill, what a presence the monument & flag has!!! We were instantly drawn & had to stop. The wind was blowing, so it was a little chilly for me. I took as many pictures as I could & I had to get back in the car. It was worth the stop. They accept donations & offer a CD - “ The Truth Concerning the Confederate Flag. “ We haven’t listened to it as of yet. Off behind the memorial is a cemetery where a lot of soldiers are buried. 17. 4.5 Edgefield Missionary baptist Church Cemetery (2 reviews)
    - Wilma Rudolph's Grave
    Spent < 1 hour Cemeteries
It was quite emotional to visit Edgefield Missionary Baptist Church to see Wilma Rudolph's grave. After reading, watching movies and documentaries, as well as driving on a boulevard in Clarksville named in her honor, it was a true pleasure to be there. It's hard to imagine all that she accomplished in her lifetime and there certainly will not be another like her. I highly recommend a visit. It's easy to find the cemetery and it's always open.
