I discover something new here each visit. This is at the bottom of the Roaring Fork Nature Motor Trail. There is a fifty cent guidebook for this homestead alone. Our last visit was really wet, so we didn't get to venture as far into the woods behind the house as we would have liked. Fun, fun, fun, all times of the year. See more..

Falcon Rest is the Victorian mansion where history is fun. Built in 1896 by Gorilla Pants manufacturer Clay Faulkner, it's been called "Tennessee's Biltmore" by PBS. Some say it's presided over by a friendly ghost. Open daily year round for guided tours, tea room lunches, Victorian Gift Shop, and history-based entertainment and meals for group tours. For nearby overnight lodging, see our listing for Falcon Manor B&B at Falcon Rest, the four guest suites on the mansion's grounds. See more..
  5. 4.5 Blount Mansion (74 reviews)
    - Must see for tourists in Knoxville
    Sunday: Architectural Buildings
    Blount Mansion image
This is a fabulous, interesting, educational tour of the home; you'll learn a lot about the family that lived there, and a lot about the early history of Knoxville, too. It is definitely worth your time when visiting Knoxville, and the entry fee is quite reasonable. I was fortunate to have Penny, a docent, as my tour guide. She gave a great tour, readily takes questions, and know a lot about the home, the family that built the home, and its history. See more..

This was not a planned activity on our road trip. We came across this gem by chance and would highly recommend this trip to any one. This is a Confederate Museum as well, but please keep an open mind and visit it with an open heart and mind. The tour guide we had the pleasure of having was Larry and Lisa. They were both very knowledgeable and very receptive to questions. Take time if your in the area and visit this place you will not regret it at all. See more..
  7. 5.0 Wynnewood State Historic Site (17 reviews)
    - A Step Back in Time
Sunday: 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
    Wynnewood State Historic Site image
Wynnewood is a state historic site that includes the largest historic log structure in Tennessee. Built in 1828 by the Wynne family, the structure served as the Castalian Springs Resort for stagecoach travelers and tourists interested in the sulphur mineral springs and their reported medicinal powers, located at the base of the hill. The property came to Mrs. Almira Wynne as a bequest from her father, General James Winchester of nearby Cragfont. Almira and her husband AR moved the family into the resort and AR left his wife the management of operations while he traveled for business. The resort was also home to approximately 20-30 enslaved men, women, and children who worked at the resort and the agricultural operations on site. The Civil War ended the resort's operations, and they were not picked up again until a resurgence in 1899. The site is currently owned by the Tennessee Historical Commission and managed by nonprofit Historic Castalian Springs. See more..

The John Gordon House is a super quick stop along the Natchez Trace Parkway. Cumberland County Courthouse image
The architecture of this 1905 structure is intriguing. The use of stone should be of interest, along with the clock tower. On the grounds is a gazebo, constructed for the countries bi-centenniel in 1976, and is regularly used for announcements, gatherings, music and more. Also on the grounds of a replica multi-directional sign post that stood at a downtown crossroads in the early 1900's. On the opposite site of the grounds is an 1870's (?) steam engine, the first in this county. See more..

  14. 4.0 Temperance Building (1 review)
    - Beautiful Architectural Building
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
The Temperance Building is a beautiful architectural building that represents the history of Harriman. Unfortunately the building itself is no longer open to the public due to needed renovations, but it is still worth a visit when you are in the area. There is plenty of other things to do on your visit. The Temperance Building was originally built by the East Tennessee Land Company in the early 1890s to serve as their offices as they developed Harriman as a planned Temperance community. Later it served as the home of American University, and has also held several other uses throughout its history. See more..
