Love it!

I discover something new here each visit. This is at the bottom of the Roaring Fork Nature Motor Trail. There is a fifty cent guidebook for this homestead alone. Our last visit was really wet, so we didn't get to venture as far into the woods behind the house as we would have liked. Fun, fun, fun, all times of the year.

Nice Backwoods Area Close to Gatlinburg
I visited this area on a mild (as in 60+ degree) day in January. Purchased the guide for $0.50 and read up on the history of the place. The buildings are just basic structures that are open all the time, no attendant, so there aren't any furnishings, memorabilia, etc. but still interesting to see the construction and how small a space the large family shared. Some of the nature trail sites mentioned in the guide piqued my interest and, since it was listed as an easy 30-minute hike, I headed out. Do not be fooled by the description! While it was fairly flat terrain, it was by no means level. For this active 50's grandma, it was rougher than expected. The very rocky trail had me frequently stopping to plan out where to put my next few steps. Had I known how rough it was going to be I'd have changed into my hiking shoes and grabbed the walking stick. Also, the trail definitely needs to be better marked. Markings were few and far between. I quickly learned to watch the ground for the gray gravel that had at some point been put down as the trail bed. And you'll see some numbered trail markings; unfortunately the current guide does not reference them so I had no idea what I was supposed to be taking note of. All of this being said, I do recommend visiting the area and taking the trail. With very little elevation change, it is by no means a hard trail compared to many others in the Park, it's just not a smooth trail. I'll do it again, hopefully with the grandkids next time, but will know to be better prepared. I saw some beautiful water, the old tub mill on the walk and a single salamander was all the wildlife I saw, not that I really expected to see much in the way of wildlife given the season.

    Beautiful hike
This was our first hike in the national park and a great warm up for more challenging adventures. Absolutely beautiful scenery with rock formations, beautiful streams and small waterfalls. We were surprised that parts were challenging. This isn’t an easy paved walkway. You’ll need to cross streams on log bridges, step across stones and navigate some fallen trees. No steep hills. Highly recommend you check it out, but it wouldn’t be good for a stroller or anyone with mobility issues.
