Interesting Memphis history shared during historical cemetery tour!

We often visit historic cemeteries in the cities we visit while on roadtrips so looked into a visit to Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis. And found that they had a special tour event that weekend....their annual Soul of the City tour, and this year it featured Memphis Music! Since it was our first visit to this cemetery, we chose to attend the 5:30 tour so that it was still light out. Run by the cemetery volunteers group, this tour tells the story of selected cemetery residents (based on the theme) told by volunteers taking on the persona of another cemetery resident. The stories were interesting and compelling, and the historical reenactors terrific in their presentations. $20 per person. The tour lasted about an hour. A great way to learn a little Memphis Music history! We will definitely visit the cemetery should we have another opportunity to visit Memphis!

    Breathtaking cemented history.
This is a cemetary that has artistic headstones dated back as far back the 1800's. Some of the stones had proverbs and stories on how they passed. Some gave advice. Many were made from many diffrent materials and different languages. You can drive threw the entire site if you wish. I chose to drive part and then walk part for photography purposes. This is a free attraction that I recommend on cool day.

A good rainy day activity, good stories mixed in with history.
It was an interesting tour. Touring a cemetery was nothing we had ever done before so it was a new experience for us. Bonus! We could take our dog and didn’t need to get out of our car so it was a perfect rainy day activity while staying in Memphis. We purchased the $10 audio option (to allow us to listen to the tour on our phone) and received a cemetery map to follow along with the audio portion of the tour. The tour thru the cemetery was adequately marked with signage including the stop number. It would have been very helpful if the audio portion would have said the number (i.e., stop #43) that corresponded with the sign rather than just “the next stop”. We did get a bit mixed up but figured it out and became in-sync again with our stops and with the audio tour. I should mention that the cemetery doesn’t have manicured grounds nor is it in tip-top shape, but given it’s age that certainly shouldn’t be a surprise.
