A setting that gives rise to contemplation and emotion
If you have never visited a national cemetery and you are nearby this one, you should visit. The row upon row of uniform white grave markers causes you to reflect on the individuals buried there and why they met their end. They were much like us and were caught up in events bigger than themselves. Was it really necessary that they die? They must be respected. It is very sobering yet peaceful to walk the ground where they lay.

A Humbling Experience
Over 6,000 fallen Union Soldiers (and possibly a few Confederate) from the battles of Stones River, Franklin, Spring Hill, and others in the Middle Tennessee area rest here. Take your time and learn about how the Cemetery came into being, who built it, and how extensive the search for every last fallen Soldier was carried out on you visit here and at the Stones River Battlefield itself. There are periodic opportunities to volunteer and clean the headstones or decorate them with flowers or wreaths. The Rangers at the Battlefield do a wonderful series of living history programs here as well.
