One of the hardest hike I have ever done. Definitely be prepared, have plenty of water, and good hiking shoes. This hike gets harder towards the summit, so take your time hiking to the top. Once you get to the top the view is amazing. See more..

  5. 5.0 Steens Mountain (63 reviews)
    - Kiger Gorge and the Gun Sight
    Mountains
    Steens Mountain image
Steens Mountain, in far SE Oregon, is one of the most amazing wilderness places accessible by car. Located in the Great Basin, it is a 30 mile long fault block uplift mountain which reaches almost 10,000 ft at it's highest point. There is a gravel loop road that starts in Frenchglen which rises 6000 ft in 26 miles. You'll drive through a herd of sheep on the way up. At the top, there are three glacial gorges the most spectacular of which is Kiger Gorge which is perfectly U-shaped. Looming over Kiger is the eponhymously named Gunsight notch also glacially carved. From the top, the view is east to the Alvord Desert; to the south on the mountain is Wildhorse lake, accessible by a steep climb down/up. If you like scenery in the middle of nowhere there is no better place. If you time it right, you could view fulll moon rise from the top. I wish I had better words to tell you how amazing this place is. See more..
  6. 4.5 Watchman Peak (48 reviews)
    - Best place to watch the sunset and take a pano
Spent 1-2 hours Mountains • Hiking Trails
    Watchman Peak image
The sun actually sets behind you, but it's good for photos as the mountains aren't back-lit. From the peak, You can also see the sun set on the other side of the mountains as well (on the other side of the lake from the peak). Sunset does get crowded with all of the photos trying to angle for the best view, starting at over an hour before the sun was actually supposed to set. But a pano on the iphone also captures the moment and the colors in the sky. We headed back down as soon as the sun set, but I wish I stayed just a bit longer, as the moon then rose above the mountains as well, and you could see it reflect over the water (we caught this at the bottom at the overlook point). 7. 4.5 Larch Mountain (43 reviews)

Up to 5 major peaks (Rainier, St. Helens, Adams, Hood, Jefferson) visible depending on visibility. Unfortunately in our visit only Mt. Hood was visible (22 mi away), but it was worth it. Relatively easy ~15 minute hike up a well laid out trail from the parking lot. See more..
