The reader board explain some of the history of the Chinese in Baker, a Pagoda (made im China), a marble stone naming the people known to have been buried in the cemetery. Most of those buried here were exhumed and returned to China. There is one stone remaining and it is known that at least 3 others remain buried here. Knights of Pythias Cemetery image
This simple graveyard, dating to at least 1883, was maintained for many years by the local lodge of the Knights of Pythias. Many of the souls interred here were Confederate veterans of the Civil War, who moved West to Oregon, to seek their fortunes. Moving among the remaining gravestones gives one a sense of the continuing history of this great nation. The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded in Washington, D.C., on 19 February 1864. The Knights of Pythias was the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. This legend illustrates the ideals of loyalty, honor, and friendship that are the center of the order. See more..
