The Harney County Historical Society Museum image
As volunteers at the small, volunteer-run museum in our hometown, we like to visit other similar museums. The Harney County Museum was an excellent one. Like most of these kinds of museums, it takes dedicated and usually older, retired folks like us to keep them going. It was rich with exhibits of the local history with two floors of artifacts in a wide range of interest areas: native culture, pioneer days, minerals, forest products industry, and so forth. The docent on duty was very helpful, too. We spent over two hours but could have done a longer visit if we hadn't needed to get to our next destination during daylight hours. See more..

What a wonderful visit to this quiet museum and upstairs art gallery display. The main floor displays were well done, actually timely for today's political climate, and the staff was very knowledgeable and kind. They also gave us the recommendation to eat lunch at The Dizzy Hen. The upstairs exhibition was "Painting Oregon’s Harvest: The Art of Kathy Deggendorfer". Very nice. They don't charge for this museum--it is a private collection, so it is hard to review it as a business--that charges. They are offering it to the public for free, so I can't fault anything they do. In fact, even if it were a business, I think it i would be awesome. The selection of planes is great. The gentleman there can tell you all about them and the whens and hows about every piece. The tarmac tour is worth your time --seeing the planes that are ready to fly and being worked on currently. What a great asset to a small community! See more..

    Scio Museum image
A very long and interesting history going back to when the first settlers came to Oregon, and met the local tribes. Donated items from the families going back generations. Photos, stories, and people still here to tell stories that have 2nd hand accounts of stories from the original pioneers. There is much information from first hand accounts and stories from the first settlers. It is a very small building and full of facts and items. I live nearby, and my home is 100 years old as in a couple of the photos in the history book here, of course my home has been upgraded over the years but the original photo is there. I can't say it is for large groups and such because it is a tiny building and not enough room for lots of people, but it well maintained and lots of stories to fire the imagination of historic facts about the area. It is only open in late spring through late summer. See more..

What an incredible find while vacationing on the McKenzie River! We weren't sure what we'd find as we turned off McKenzie Highway on a dirt road and followed it to the Museum. As luck would have it Mr. Ron Miner was working in the Museum and invited us in. What a wealth of artifacts and historical displays we enjoyed! The intimate size and perfectly curated displays were amazing. Ron Miner was kind enough to provide background information about the displays and provide historical information that made our tour especially interesting. We were so glad we went! See more..

This is such a great place to learn, see and touch reptiles. The owner, Tim, is very nice about educating his visitors and customers as this is a retail location. When we (son's family with 2 and 7 year old grandsons) stopped in they were helping a lizard with his shedding skin. It was fun and interesting to watch them care for him. They have all kinds of lizards, tortoises, turtles, frogs, and snakes. If you want to see the Venomous Reptile Museum, pay $3 and you enter a separate room. This is the only place I want to see venomous reptiles. Fascinating! I saw frogs, snakes and lizards. The Diamond Back Rattler scared my daughter-in-law who was raised in Texas. Recently they rescued an Indian Cobra. This is a great and safe place to take your kids to learn about reptiles. If you decide you want to live with one, they have all the supplies to support that relationship. See more..
