  1. 4.5 Alvord Desert (6 reviews)
    - The desert is a surprising stunner but beware the road
    Spent 2-3 hours Deserts

This desert is a stunning but seemingly little known attraction south of Burns. The whole loop road from Burns south to Fields is well worth a day — more! — of exploration. My main purpose of this review however is to warn visitors like us who show up in a small rental car that the desert is accessed by an unpaved, not well maintained, completely washboarded gravel road. It was so teeth-rattling we couldn’t go more than 15 mph. We left from our hotel in Burns intending to do the loop counter-clockwise, not realizing that a 30-mile section of the loop past Fields is this washboarded horror show. So we went back the way we came. We want to come back tho — in a big SUV! The loop road around Steens Mountain is apparently not open til deep summer, and we’d also like to experience that. 2. 5.0 Jubilee Champagne and Dessert Bar (5 reviews)
    - An Independence "Bakery/Champagne/Dessert Shop" Gem!
    Sunday: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM Deserts

This beautifully, interior-designed Bakery/Dessert shop with a new liquor license is just a short walk from the new Independence Hotel. Definitely a "must-stop" in the morning for incredible Cinnamon Buns, etc., Coffees, Teas & Mimosas and sparkling Champagne selections, etc. served throughout the day. Return later for "mid-day & afternoon snack" selections of savory offerings and fabulous cupcakes, tarts, lemon bars, brownies, etc. Popular evening visits for tiramisu, Creme Brulee & other dessert selections are often accompanied by "live music" on weekend nights! Driving by at 5:00 pm, we noticed through the large front windows, at least 4 tables with seated customers; a winning sign of this "Independence gem's" success. NOTE: We wished it would open a little earlier in the morning...9:00 am!?! See more..
