  1. 4.5 Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area (1.067 reviews)
    - Interesting geological formation!
State Parks • Beaches • Hiking Trails
Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area image
Very interesting geological wonder at the end of a short road through a cute little area with a winery and some restaurants/coffee houses (?) - all closed due to wildfire smoke unfortunately. The gaping formation is thought to be a result of some sea caves collapsing. I think you used to be able to walk around in it, but it’s all fenced off from what I can see. You might be able to access it from the beach somewhere but we weren’t able to thoroughly explore due to the smoke and fog. Also could be dangerous if the tide is coming in. I think we caught it at low tide. It’s a beautiful area, with rocks and caves and water swishing and swirling around deep in the “bowl”! It’s a quick visit but may take up more time when the little shops are open or if you can hike around the area! Definitely something to see! See more..

what a great hike, about 3 miles, but the first part out of the parking lot was not paved, but the trail met up with the paved roadway, and it was amazing, steep in parts, but the views were breathtaking, or was that my out of shape body telling me otherwise. this only took about 2 hours, including time at the top for the rest of us to catch out limited breaths. a must do.. 4. 5.0 Oneonta Gorge (507 reviews)
    - Amazing rock structure right over your head!

    Oneonta Gorge image
When we went the area was still closed off but we walked through the tunnel to see what we could. It was fun, there are not a lot of places where you can walk through a tunnel or have massive boulders right over your head, it felt a little death-defying. The area we could see was definitely worth the stop. See more..
  5. 4.5 Horsetail Falls- Columbia River Gorge (392 reviews)
    - Great Falls to see
    Hiking Trails
Horsetail Falls- Columbia River Gorge image
Reading the "terrible" reviews, I have to disagree. The fact access was closed once due to a fire is not a reason to give it a 1 for all time. I will concede that it was busy during the winter and I can see how summer weekends will make it super busy and maybe long wait times, but on the other hand, if they were crappy, there would not be wait times. I liked these falls more than Multnomah, and are surprised they are half the flow volume as I thought Horsetail to be more impressive. I liked them both. See more..
  6. 4.5 Cleetwood Cove Trail (224 reviews)
    - Go early
    Hiking Trails
    Cleetwood Cove Trail image
Thanks to covid, the boat tours weren't operating. We stopped here pretty early in the morning & we weren't the first people there. About 7 or 8 people already walking down to fish. One guy told my husband "before the swimmers get here"! Not a lot of room down there for the boats, swimmers & fishing apparently. The parking lot is generous, but must fill up fast. There's pit toilets by the parking lot. The trail looked very nice. Due to my husband's mobility issues, we didn't attempt it. I've heard it's a hard way back up. We enjoyed the view from the top & moved on. See more..
  7. 4.5 Drift Creek Falls Trail (223 reviews)
    - Enjoyable 3-mile hike, lovely scenery
    Hiking Trails
    Drift Creek Falls Trail image
This hike was recommended to us by a local. A 9 mile drive in off highway 18, very bendy narrow road so take care as there's some steep drop offs. We bought the $5 ePass in advance as the official website states that the option to pay cash on arrival has been suspended. Beautiful, scenic in & out hike through a pine forest, culminating in the suspension bridge & the falls themselves. Stunning. As others have said, it's mostly uphill on the way back; we saw a couple of people struggling & I must admit that I was panting a bit by the end. I strongly recommend taking a bottle of water especially if hot like it was yesterday. See more..

    Pinnacles Overlook Hike image
We visited Crater Lake on 2 days - July 20 and 23. When we came on July 20, the road to the Pinnacles Overlook Trailhead was closed. On July 23, it was open. The trail is an easy .8 miles roundtrip with 42 feet elevation gain. It took us 30 minutes total and we stopped at all the various overlooks to take pictures. It is worth a visit if you are going to Plaikni Falls. It is further down the same road. See more..
  12. 5.0 McKenzie River National Recreation Trail (77 reviews)
    - Great Family Hike
    Hiking Trails
McKenzie River National Recreation Trail image
McKenzie River National Recreation Trail is one of my favorite hikes. It is a great easy hike for families. This past week I started thursday early morning (6:30 am) at Paradise Campground. What is different now from past hikes are the number of bikers. All bikers were polite and shred the trail. I noticed no litter on the trail. The trail seems to have escaped the fires, wind storms and weather hazards. The trail follows the Mc Kenzie River and you will find lots of camera opportunities. Rafters are frequent and love to be shouted at and waved to. See more..

We rode the entire trail and found it to be one of the best maintained trails we've been on. At main road intersections they have warning lights installed to warn vehicles, there are several bathrooms and picnic tables along the route, and many beautiful views of the lake and surrounding forests. Plus a few nice covered bridges just off of the trail. See more..
  15. 4.5 Salmon River Trail (64 reviews)
    - A great afternoon hike, but press on for some solitude.
    Hiking Trails
    Salmon River Trail image
Visiting the Ranger station first will clear up any questions about parking or use permits, but it was not open when we visited. For just a day hike, park at the bridge where the road crosses the Salmon river. HIke in to the Wilderness boundary marker, get your permit (if after May 15), and keep going. Just past the bridge, the trail begins a moderate climb to the overlook above Frustration Falls. This makes the climb worth it. A short afternoon is time enough to make it in and out to at least Goat Creek camp. With a full day available, beyond Goat Creek the trail narrows, there are less people, great hiking and more fantastic scenery. Some tips to help first-timers fit in: This is a friendly place; greet other hikers on the trail and help each other pass. Don't take your kids past the Rolling Riffle camp, it is a long climb for them and it really is dangerous at the overlook. Don't play in the river. And please, pack out your trash! See more..

    - Blue Pool with Kids
    Hiking Trails
    Tamolitch Pool Trail image
Incredible. We took our 4 kids ages 5-13 and it wasn’t hard at all. We also had the dog. The hike is about 4 miles both ways on an easy trail. When you reach blue pool, if you want to go down to the water’s edge you’ll want to follow along the cliff because the trail continues past and the trails taking you around to where you can descend to the bank are somewhat difficult to find. There is something of a climb to get in and out from the bank. If you reach a graffitied sign you passed the trails going around to the bank. Go during the week if you can. Go early or late on a weekend, because it can be super busy. See more..
  18. 4.5 Angels Rest Trail (52 reviews)
    - Good Hike - be prepared
    Hiking Trails
    Angels Rest Trail image
Went on this hike with my teenage son. I am in good shape and so is he but we're still d dearly challenged. The trail ranks moderate to difficult depending upon the conditions in my mind. The trail and views are beautiful and the top is stunning. The trial is decently sloped - we gained over 1600 feet in elevation. My phone showed round trip over 6 mile, which took us about 2 hours. The trail condition was super muddy in numerous locations - good hiking shoes are a must this time of year. At the top we saw a healthy wind and rain and at least 10-15 degrees cooler than the start. We came prepared so no issues for us but saw many folks coming up in tank tops and shorts? The trails got a little contested at times. The payoff is worth the effort and plan accordingly. See more..
  19. 4.0 Link River Trail (50 reviews)

The Link River Trail runs 1.5 miles through the Link River Canyon, a scenic gorge located in the heart of Klamath Falls. North trailhead is on Lakeshore Drive. See the modest falls for which town was named. See more..
  20. 4.5 Watchman Peak (48 reviews)
    - Best place to watch the sunset and take a pano
Spent 1-2 hours Mountains • Hiking Trails
    Watchman Peak image
The sun actually sets behind you, but it's good for photos as the mountains aren't back-lit. From the peak, You can also see the sun set on the other side of the mountains as well (on the other side of the lake from the peak). Sunset does get crowded with all of the photos trying to angle for the best view, starting at over an hour before the sun was actually supposed to set. But a pano on the iphone also captures the moment and the colors in the sky. We headed back down as soon as the sun set, but I wish I stayed just a bit longer, as the moon then rose above the mountains as well, and you could see it reflect over the water (we caught this at the bottom at the overlook point). 23. 4.5 Pinnacles Trail (40 reviews)
    - Nice trail worth doing if you need a break!

    Pinnacles Trail image
While probably our least favorite of the 6 trails we did, we still consider this worthwhile as it shows you another aspect of the very diverse trail systems in the park. It is a short, very easy walk to see the unique pinnacle formations. As always bring your bug spray. Take advantage of a rest walk before your next hike. Very near Plaikni Falls so worth the hike while in that area! See more..

Friend and I took this hike early first thing in the morning. Hike up to some time, friend walks slow. Once on top the views are magical. We found resting spot and just sat before heading down. Walk down much faster that up. Ha ha. We recommend taking this hike for the great views. See more..

  26. 5.0 Ramona Falls Trail (34 reviews)
    - Gorgeous, easy hike
Spent More than 3 hours Hiking Trails • Forests • Waterfalls
    Ramona Falls Trail image
An easy trail with lovely scenery along the path to the falls-a lot of mossy rocks and flowers. There aren’t any difficult elevation gains, mostly gentle inclines. Ramona Falls are a beautiful cascade over a rocky backdrop. There is a small river crossing with a few fallen trees forming “bridges,” but I don’t know if the water would be as shallow earlier in the season. Levels usually drop in July. It took me a little over 5 hours for the 7.5 mile loop with plenty of photo stops and a lunch break at the falls. See more..
  27. 5.0 Sun Notch Trail (34 reviews)
    - IMO best view of the Phantom Ship
    Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
    Sun Notch Trail image
What looks like an easy unassuming walk turns out to have the best view of the Phantom Ship. We arrived around 11:00 am and it was beyond spectacular with mirror image of the island and views where you simply are not able to describe the color blue of the water. It is magnificent. It was not that crowded as it is on the east rim and people probably tend to arrive later in the day. Our 2nd day we did Cleetwood Cove at 8:15 - swam and then made our way over to this trail and were rewarded with very few people on a Friday morning. Enjoy! See more..

    Fanno Creek Greenway Trail image
As I am a runner, I just happened upon this trail, felt really lucky, you can go a long way like from beaverton all the way to tigard, maybe further but that's a good 5 miles in each direction, flat easy running only several streets to cross, but to my suprise, cars actually stopped when crossing, doesn't happen in las vegas, bonus if your there during the summer you can stop and pick berries and eat them all along the way, doesn't get better than that...enjoy See more..

    Little Zigzag Falls image
Fantastic hike for families with young ones. We took this hike around 3pm after a long day of other hikes. I was apprehensive about taking on another hike with 3 tired kids, but I was advised it was easy. My wife and I had our 10 year old, 6 year old and 3 year old with us. The whole path was shaded, had plenty of rocks and things for the kids to climb on, the stream/river runs along the path the entire way, which also kept them entertained. It wasn't terribly busy in the afternoon, and the whole experience was great. Even then tired little 3 year old had a great time. All 3 kids rated it their favorite hike so far. See more..

Nice easy trail, goes for about 8 miles although I did not do very much with my young daughter. It starts next to cabin 21 at Union Creek Resort. If you are not a guest at the lodge you can just park your car at the store or on the street and head straight back behind the lodge building until you see cabin 21, the trailhead is on the left side of the cabin. It goes next to the creek, which is beautiful with clear water. We surprised a deer along the trail. See more..

Getting here is really half the fun, especially on a sunny day in fall with the top down. Once you arrive, though, the trails wind along creeks and hillsides, past berry bushes and some interpretive exhibits. I've never stayed in the cabins on site, but they look inviting for a semi-natural visit -- great to go camping with kids who are not yet used to "roughing it." See more..

  39. 5.0 McKenzie River Trail (14 reviews)
    - Great trail
Spent More than 3 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
    McKenzie River Trail image
One of my favorite hiking trails because it is close to the river, wide trail and manageable by almost all hiker abilities. I hiked in July when the wild flowers were in bloom. I suggest going on a week day when the trail is less occupied. Take a lunch, plenty of water and of course your camera. I have never had a problem parking in a trail head area. However, as always never leave valuables visible in your vehicle. Check for ticks after your hike and consider bug repellant of some kind. See more..

  41. 4.5 Carroll Rim Trail (12 reviews)
    - Best views of the Painted Hills
    Hiking Trails
    Carroll Rim Trail image
The Carroll Rim Trail provides some of the best views of the Painted Hills in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This is the only long trail in this Unit of the Monument, and the trail is only 1.6 miles round trip. The trail climbs from the small parking lot at the trailhead to the top of Carroll Rim. If this parking lot is full, one could park a short distance away at the Painted Hills Overlook parking lot. The initial part of the trail is gravel and then it is dirt up the hill. In case of rain, the dirt trail could be sticky and slippery. The trail levels out as it traverses the ridge. At the top and end of the trail one gets an awesome 360-view of the Painted Hills including all the main features of the monument. See more..

This is a nice 7 mile round trip hike. From the trailhead hike about 2 miles and you will see the rusting machinery from the Merten Mill. Another 0.2 miles, there will be a fork where you want to go right to cross the bridge and continue on the trail left along the river. Hike another mile to the Opal Pool. Just beyond you will see a bridge that crosses towards Jawbone Flats where you can rent cabins to stay. From there just hike the main road back to the parking lot. See more..

It felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, fantastic, and then a member of our party needed to turn back so we walked back to the car and drove to the top. We walked to the peak from there and enjoyed the view. We met a group of hikers from the Grand Old Broads of the Wilderness. It was fun to chat with them about the variety of hikes they do. It has picnic facilities for both individual and group use, with electric stoves (this is a power company park, remember?), sinks, water, and electrical outlets. Free and open to the public, there is a small day-use fee for groups. The park is 3 miles east of Rainier and 42 miles west of Portland, on US 30. Spent More than 3 hours Hiking Trails
    Mount Thielsen image
The trailhead to Mount Thielsen is off of Highway 138. The trail takes about an hour or more to hike to the top of the Mountain. Mount Thielsen is over 9,000 feet tall and parts pf the trail are steep and the final approach to the summit is could be a little intimidating since it goes through a narrow slot in the rock. The exposure is dramatic and the view is incredible. If you plan a visit make sure you check the weather forecast. As with other peaks in the Cascades, this mountain can change personality from welcoming to very dangerous, depending on the approaching storm. Lightning storms in the area should definitely be avoided. The peak is called the lightning rod of the Cascades for a good reason. See more..
