We reserved our tickets to ride in early June about 4 weeks in advance, not knowing it would be raining all day during our visit with fog that completely obscured the nearby Wallowa Mountains. No matter. This was such a fun experience! Our almost 3 yo daughter loved the ride, and so did mom and dad! It was so much fun riding the rails and the electric assist made the uphill return easier, though it wasn't completely necessary. The staff are all top notch and made our entire experience so memorable! I can only imagine how much fun this would be on a clear day! See more..

    - A great time riding the rails in Sumpter

A nice leisurely (about 40 minute) ride from McEwen station to Sumpter. All volunteers on the train were friendly and full of good information. The schedule is helpful when you want to spend a bit of time in Sumpter getting ice cream at the Scoop and Steamer or going to tour the dredge and learn to pan for gold, then catch the train back to McEwen. We went on an off weekend but according to a Sumpter resident there are train "hold-ups" where they stage a mock train robbery with horses and gun-slingers and all. There are the options for open air cars as well as covered cars. This is a steam engine and there is ash and debris that falls so if you don't want to get hit go for the close top car. The whistle might be too loud for babies and very small children. I would definitely recommend this for people heading through Sumpter. See more..

We took the Excursion Train from Elgin one way all the way to Minam, followed by a bus shuttle back to Elgin in early June. Though it was pouring rain the entire time we were on the train, the views of the Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers and surrounding mountains were incredible. Everything was so lush and green, and the rivers were just rushing and approaching flood stage, which added to the excitement. The lunch that was provided was excellent and the staff were so professional. One of our favorite train rides we've ever been on! See more..

My family loves going here! This was the first year we went during Christmas time and it did not disappoint! Their light display is incredible and the owners are some of the friendliest people around. They also have a wooden train that was built for them that the kids can play on while you wait to ride the main train, during the summer you can explore the grounds and explore all of their decorations that stay up year round. After you ride the train take a peek at their gift shop and take a souvenir home to remember your stay. You can even take it one step farther and book a party with them to have access to the train for just your family and friends! See more..
